How can we solve/

reduce climate change?

Discover

I. What is Climate Change?

- Climate Change is also called global warming and is one big world problem.
This is rise in average surface temperatures on Earth’s atmosphere generally
attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon
dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. This also is a change of
climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters
the composition of the global atmosphere which is the reason why the 21 st
century world faces many challenges. is happening now and it is happening,
not in far-flung corners of the world but in human communities.

II. What are the Effects of Climate Change brought about by consumption
and production?

LU_Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century_Module6

a. Loss of Livelihood
-Some people lost their sources of income from the environment due to
climate change
- Some of the affected who lost their source of income are those
who are engaged in agriculture and aquaculture which forces
them to search for new livelihoods.

b. More Sickness
- There are changes in infectious disease transmission patterns
- There is an increase of vector/ water-borne diseases and
population displacement
- Polluted land, air and water may bring about unprecedented
and unpredictable sicknesses to people and may relocate them
from their former residences.

c. Damage to infrastructure and Services

- If there are problems with the climate, it threathens the well-
being of urban residents.
-If there is one system failure or disruption, it may affect others.
- An example of this is when a failure of the electrical grid affect
everything from water treatment to public health.

d. Loss of Coastal Defenses

- Marine habitat and biodiversity were destroyed due to climate
change.
- There was an obvious reduced fish populations in the bodies of
water.
- Coastal erosion and flooding and land loss are becoming
frequent

e. Failure in Agriculture
-In the presence of climate change, people experience crop loss, increased pest
infestations and rising food prices and food imports which results to food
and water shortage.

f. Reduced Energy Production Potential

-The increased demand for energy service will not be met-Rising temperatures
are expected to reduce power plant output thus resulting to lesser energy
produced

g. Rise of Sea Surface Temperatures

-This can lead to more powerful storms and death of coral reefs thus a decline
in fish catch

h. Ocean Acidification
-The more acid in the oceans, the more dangerous it is for the coral reefs.
Because of the imbalance in the pH level, shrimps are not able to develop
skins, oysters cannot develop shells and fish larvae may not be able to
develop bones.

i. Rise of Sea Levels

LU_Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century_Module6

-When sea levels rise due to the melting of ice glaciers , it can submerge low-
lying communities which could lead to loss of lives and properties.

j. Intensified Tropical Cyclones

-Tropical cyclones are now observed in places where it has never been seen or
experienced.
-Weather events become highly unpredictable resulting to difficulty in
purposes of planning and normal business operations.

k. Intensified rainfall, river flow and flooding

-Rainfall will reach new highs and lows. Some areas will experience an upward
trend in rainfall while other parts will experience intensification of drought.

III. What are the Solutions to Climate Change?

a. Reduce Energy Consumption

5 Steps to Reduce your Energy Consumption

1. Shutdown your computer.
Computers are some of the biggest energy users so it is best to shut it down
when not in use to avoid drawing power.

2. Choose the right light.

Most industries recommend the use of LED bulbs because it is an energy
efficient and saving light. LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than
traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95% of the
energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat. Less
energy use reduces the demand from power plants and decreases
greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Unplug idle electronics.

Electronics that are not in use should be unplugged to avoid consuming
power. There is still energy wasted so people should practice and remind
themselves to always unplug.

4. Use a power strip

Power strips are great if you have multiple electronics within a close
proximity to one another. Most outlets in residential and commercial areas
only include two sockets, which is not always sufficient, so having the extra
strip is really convenient and great for businesses or restaurants or even
residential houses looking to conserve power at a cheaper price.

5. Turn off the lights.

Turning the lights off when you leave your room is necessary to help save
electricity, lower your utility bills, extending the life of your light bulbs and
buy bulbs less often.

LU_Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century_Module6

b. Travel Green

How to travel Green?

1. Give the car a break
Take a walk, a bike, a bus and share a ride with others when going
somewhere. Smart transportation choices can make a big impact in
helping revive our environment. This could save up fuel and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.

2. Use your buying power

Choose a car that is fuel efficient or electric. It will use less gas, reduce
emissions and save money.

3. Clean up the bus

Schools can replace or upgrade older buses so they are more fuel efficient
or run on cleaner fuels.

4. Do not be idle
Avoid putting your car in idle position because the engine is running when
you are not moving. Running the engine burns fuel, which not only wastes
gasoline, but also produces greenhouse gases and other kinds of air
pollution.

5. Choose a green destination and activity during leisure

When going out for a vacation with family or friends, the suggested
destination should be a place like beaches, oceans, mountains, parks,
water reserves, zoos, and the like while the suggested activities are hiking,
walking, swimming, sight-seeing, strolling, roller blades, biking,
skateboarding and others. These things should be kept in mind to lessen
damage and danger to the environment.

c. Watch your water use

Water Conservation Tips

1. Be water-wise
Turn the water off while brushing your teeth, try taking shorter
showers, do not senselessly soak yourself when not needed, do the
dishes, and use the excess water. Recycle water. Learn more ways you
can to save water.

2. Harvest the rain

In places where water is hard to find or difficult to access, it is possible
to harvest the rain that you can use for other purposes inside and
outside the house.

3. Fix the leaks

Approximately 200 gallons of water a day is lost due to faulty
infrastructure, including leaking pipes, broken water mains, and faulty
meters. Assessing and checking your water meter will monitor your
water use and know the level of water you use every month.

LU_Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century_Module6

d. Use Clean Energy
Clean or renewable energy provides reliable power supplies and fuel
diversification, which enhance energy security, lower risk of fuel spills,
and reduce the need for imported fuels. This also helps conserve the
nation’s natural resources.

Benefits of Using Clean Energy

1. Energy security
It provides people enough energy to be used in different purposes.

2. Economic development
Clean energy is labor intensive meaning it creates more jobs which
means increased household incomes.

3. Price stability
Clean energy does not entail fuel cost or require transportation
therefore offer greater price stability.

4. Saving humanity
Clean energy is safe for humanity which means it does not endanger
human health, lives. It even promotes longer life span.

5. Saving the environment

When clean energy is used, it does not emit compounds dangerous to
the natural environment. It does not make our lakes and streams
acidic, it does not change the nutrient balance in coastal waters and
large water basins, it does not deplete the nutrient in soil, it does not
damage the sensitive forests and farm crops and it does not affect the
diversity of ecosystems.

e. Plant a tree
Trees create the very air people breathe and filter air pollution. They
help reduce ozone levels in urban areas and most importantly, they
absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which cools the
earth.

f. Buying locally grown food

Locally grown food creates important economic opportunities,
provides health benefits and helps to reduce environmental impact. It
also helps bring the community together and gives people the
opportunity to make a difference. In addition, local food tastes better
and lasts longer.

g. Reduce waste
Reducing waste can help slow down climate change. Reducing, reusing
and recycling means:
• you buy less stuff with less packaging
• you try to borrow or rent things you need for a short period of time
• you reuse the things you already have
• you give to others things you no longer use
• you use reusable bags

LU_Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century_Module6

• you remake old things or products into new products
• you choose products made from recycled materials
