Resume Assignment

During the next week I would like you to do some research on what a resume is and write your own.

This is a very important document that you will use several times during your active life to get a job or a
career.

A few of you already have a resume and you might even have used it. This assignment might help you
write a better one. The quality of your resume is many times crucial in getting the desired job. Make
sure you do it right!

When you apply for a job the employer will ask you for your resume. Together with the resume you will
also write a cover letter. If you go for an interview, write a thank you letter after the interview.

What are the three documents for? Here are some short and basic definitions:

“A resume (also spelled résumé) is a formal document that serves to show a person’s career
background and skills. A resume is a bulleted overview of your work experience.”

“A cover letter, as the name suggests, shows your skills and accomplishments in the letter
form. (https://zety.com/blog/what-is-resume)

A prospective employer might have hundreds of resumes to review. Consider

mailing a résumé thank you letter as a follow up.

the most.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT WILL INCLUDE AND YOU WILL SUBMIT (see Steps for how to submit):

1. Resume.
2. Cover letter.
3. Thank you letter.

STEPS:

1. Create each document in Google Docs and save in a folder in your Google Drive
2. Submit a link to this folder in Remind
OR
Email the three documents as attachments to pitthigh@gmail.com
TIPS AND HINTS:

1. Your resume will be very simple and short since you don’t have a lot of working experience (if
any) and not much education at your age. That is OK!
2. You will have to choose the template for your resume, cover letter and thank you letter, there
are tons of them online.
3. Follow your template and remove what does not apply to you.
4. I recommend that you choose a very simple template.
5. You can include work experience like babysitting, working with parents on important projects,
community service: anything that qualifies as work. You will remove these later after having
more work experience.
6. For education don’t include elementary or junior high. Only high school or college courses if
applicable.
7. English is NOT a foreign language, so don’t put it under languages.
8. Include foreign languages ONLY IF you’re fluent, not just because you took a class in high school.

Feel free to text me in Remind if you have questions, or if you want a discussion call me at 510-364-
