TITLE: ESTIMATION OF POPULATION MEAN AND VARIANCE

BY SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING WITHOUT REPLACEMENT
____________________________________________________________

1. Consider a population of 5 units with values 2,3,6,8,11.

Write down all the possible samples of size 2 by without
replacement method. Show that sample mean is an
unbiased estimator of population mean in simple random
sampling without replacement. Also find the variance of
(ȳn) in simple random sampling without replacement.

2. Let the population of 4 units with values 12,13,25,28.

Write down all the possible samples of size 2 by without
replacement method. Show that sample mean is an
unbiased estimator of population mean in simple random
sampling without replacement. Also find the variance of
(ȳn) in simple random sampling without replacement.

TITLE: STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING

-PROPORTIONAL ALLOCATION AND
OPTIMUM ALLOCATION

1. Comparison of proportional and optimum allocation in stratified

random sampling. The following data is the summary of
complete census of all the 2000 farms in a region. The farms
stratified according to size of 7 strata.
Stratum Number of Average area standard
number farms (Ni) under wheat deviation of
per farm in area under
acres wheat per farm
in acres
1 394 5.4 8.3
2 461 16.3 13.3
3 381 24.7 15.1
4 334 34.5 19.8
5 169 42.1 24.5
6 113 50.1 26.0
7 148 63.8 35.2

a. For the sample of 200 farms, compute the sample size in each
stratum under proportional and optimum allocation.
b. Calculate sample variances of the selected farms under
proportional and optimum allocation.
c. Compute the gain in efficiency from the procedure as compared
simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR).

TITLE: SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING

1. A population consists of 15 units with 5 systematic

samples each with 3 units. The data is given below:
Strata 1 2 3
Systematic
sample
1 1 4 8
2 6 12 20
3 4 8 16
4 3 10 18
5 4 12 24

2. The data given below are a small artificial population

which exhibits a fairy steady raising trend. Each columns
represents a systematic sample and rows are the strata.
Compare the precision of systematic sampling, simple
random sampling and stratified sample. Data for 10
systematic samples with n=4, k=10 and N=nk=40.

-COMPLETELY RANDOMIZED DESIGN
____________________________________________________________

1. The following figures are relative to production of wheat in

kg’s of yield by applying three treatments A, B, C in 12
plots.
A 14 16 18
B 14 13 15 22
C 18 16 19 19 20
Is there any significance difference in the production of
three varieties ? Anlyse using CRD.

2. The following data involves four treatments A, B,C,D are

applied 20 animals and the observations of gain in weight of
the animals are observed. Analyse the data using CRD.
Treatments Gain in weight
A 50 65 42 38 30
B 120 40 68 84
C 35 65 124 92 61 104
