The ℗ theory:

Baker and Kent arrived at a criterion for predicting interference phenomena from
the results of a large number of experiments carried out by themselves and also
Froude.

They found that the wave-making length was equal to CpL+λ/4 and thus varied
with speed. This relation leads to ℗ theory and yields the following results:

Maximum wave resistance if:

CpL+λ/4 =(2k+1) λ/2

Or CpL/λ = k+1/4 ≈ 1/ ℗2 as ℗= √(λ/CPL)

℗max = √(4/(4k+1)) where k=0,1,2…………………

Minimum wave resistance if:

CpL+λ/4 =k λ

Or CpL/λ = k-1/4 ≈ 1/ ℗2 as ℗= √(λ/CPL)

℗min = √(4/(4k-1)) where k=1,2…………………

The figure shows what combinations

of Cp and V/√L lead to relatively
favorable and unfavorable wave-
making resistances respectively.

Wave-making resistance: Prediction of Hump & Hollow

The following particulars of a ship is given:
Length = 122 m;
B=15.25;
d = 5m;
Displacement =6783 tonne (SW)
Midship section coefficient = 0.95.

(a) When the ship obtains speed of (i) 13.402 knots, (ii) 26.804 knot & (iii)
40.206 knot, then how many wave lengths are contained in its length.

(b) Again when the vessel obtains speed of (i) 12.5 knot (ii) 14 knots & (iii) 20
knots, will the ship be considered as operating in favorable condition in
respect of wave-making resistance. In cases when you think the ship is not
operating in favorable condition, what precautions should be taken?
