ONION SHORTAGE IN THE PHILIPPINES

This topic is the latest news in the Philippines. Many were discovered why the sudden of
high price of onion in the Philippines. While doing this report I have learned about this that there
are many issues and many people involved. While doing the research a lot of information has
popped up and one of those are the speculated reasons of the shortage of onions. Onions were
always part of the ingredients of our dishes in the Philippines. Without it, it feels like there is
something missing. Onions gives a crunchy and sweetness that pairs up to our salty dishes.

As per this latest report many consumers were questioning the price of the onion to the point that
it is more costlier than the meat. People were shocked and I was also, as a cook to our house.
There are lots of reason why the price has skyrocketed its because of the typhoon that hit in the
Philippines which results to the less production of onions and also hoarding of onions. Hoarding
or pag-iimbak in Tagalog, sadly there are people who is collecting and manipulating the prices of
onions. That is why many people were so worried and can’t afford to buy the product because of
its high prices and it’s even higher than the salary of the people.

I have learned that in this vast world of ours we should be fair to everybody and mindful of our
actions. Farmers gives all their efforts and sweats and that we will just find out that there are lots
of onions out there that we can’t be able to use because they are hoarding and manipulating the
prices. Also, knowing that we are in the Philippines we should give farmers a lot for them to
plant because we have this “Yaman ng Lupa”. We should let them expand their knowledge and
give lot of opportunities for them to learn and grow as our way of encouraging them as I am also
a farmer on my own.
