NEOCLASSICISM (1780-1840)

● The term "neoclassic" is derived from the Greek word "neos," which means "new," and the Latin
word "classic," which means "classic." classicus is a Latin word that means "first class" in English.

● Neoclassicism was a decorative and visual arts trend in Western Europe. It also refers to literature,
drama, music, and architecture that were influenced by Ancient Greece and Rome's classical art and
culture.

● The Neoclassical movement occurred during the Age of Reason, also known as the Age of
Enlightenment, in the 18th century. The revival of interest in Greek and Roman classics influenced
the art style throughout this time period.

● Neoclassical art, such as paintings, sculpture, and architecture, depicted Roman history in a way
that glorified the Roman heroes

This period was derived from the Classicism movement due to a renewed interest in classical ideas
and forms, which shaped European culture. During the 18th and 19th centuries, American culture was
shaped by ideas, politics, and the great arts. It also refers to creative forms established after ancient times
yet inspired by them.
.
Characteristics of Neoclassicism:
- portrayal of Roman history
- formal composition
- the use of diagonals to show the peak of an emotion or moment (versus a regular
moment)
- local color
- overall lighting
- classic geo-structure

Classicism- This was the time when society resembled Greek and Roman beliefs and styles.
