Foreword
--`,,```,,``,`,,,,,`,`````,``,-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
published in 1955, for galvanized mild steel covers for cisterns; to facilitate that
incorporation, it was found desirable to sectionalize the specification: thus,
separate sections now exist for the three groups of products — cisterns and their
covers; tanks; cylinders.
Other principal changes in this revision are:
a) The deliberate elimination of the terms “nominal capacity” and “actual
capacity” and the inclusion of definitions for “capacity (of a cistern)” and
“water line”.
b) The alteration of the dimensioning nomenclature for cisterns and tanks.
c) The elimination of sizes C7 and C10 cisterns and the inclusion of a new
cistern (SC.150) of 108 gallons capacity to water line.
d) The elimination of sizes T1, T7 and T8 tanks.
e) The elimination of sizes Y2 and Y7 cylinders.
f) The elimination of those dimensions relating to overflow or warning pipe
details and inlet and outlet details for cisterns.
g) The elimination of those dimensions relating to heights of connections for
tanks except for a recommended minimum height for side entry immersion
heaters.
h) The inclusion of a specification for the internal coating of cisterns with a
bitumen solution, if so ordered.
j) The alteration of the specification for galvanizing so as to require
compliance with BS 729-11).
k) The substitution, for the “BS size numbers”, of a new style of “BS type
references”, in which designating letters (e.g. “SC” for “steel cistern”) are used
in conjunction with numerals (e.g. 60, 100) which indicate the obsolescent
concept of “nominal capacity”. Thus “SC.80” replaces “C.12” and carries the
meaning “an open top cistern with what is referred to still in the trade as a
nominal capacity of 80 gallons but, in fact, having a capacity to water line
of 58 gallons”.
l) The inclusion of clauses entitled “Designation (of cisterns, etc.) for ordering
purposes”, to facilitate communication between purchasers and vendors.
m) The admission of half inside rolling as a method of forming the top edges of
cisterns up to type reference SC.60.
n) The relaxation, in certain circumstances, of the requirement that cisterns
above 15 gallons capacity shall have corner plates.
o) The relaxation, in certain circumstances, of the requirement that turnover
flanges of cisterns shall be double turned.
p) The relaxation of the requirement that all cylinders shall have a hand hole;
that feature is now optional at the choice of the purchaser.

29 Manufacture of cylinders
Cylinders shall be soundly constructed. They shall be welded, riveted, or partly welded and partly riveted.
Should the purchaser specifically require any of these methods of manufacture, this shall be stated in the
enquiry and order.
Where so ordered, cylinders shall have a hand hole not less than 6 in (152 mm) in diameter. The hand hole
shall be provided with a replaceable cover of a thickness not less than that of the wall of the cylinder and
shall also be supplied complete with a suitable preformed joint ring. The seating for the cover shall be
adequately stiffened. The location of the hand hole shall be as shown in Figure 5 or as agreed between
purchaser and vendor.
31 Galvanizing of cylinders
Cylinders shall be galvanized, after manufacture, in accordance with the requirements of BS 729-114).
Before galvanizing, any flux and/or slag remaining after welding shall have been removed.
When so ordered, cylinders shall have suitable provision for immersion heater and thermostat.
Unless otherwise specified, if a combined heater and thermostat is to be used, the connection shall be
threaded with a 21/4 in (57 mm) BSP.F normal class parallel thread in accordance with Table 7 of
BS 277915) and the length of engagement shall be not less than 1/2 in (13 mm).
For top entry immersion heaters, the connection shall be arranged in the top end (dome) as close to the
centre as practicable (see Figure 7). For side entry immersion heaters, the connection shall be situated 30°
to either side of the centre of, and at a fixed distance above the base of, the cylinder as shown in Figure 7.
For dimension P see Table 4.

35 Testing of cylinders
After galvanizing, the finished cylinders shall be filled with water and withstand, for a period of at least
five minutes, the appropriate test pressures given in Table 4, and shall not show any leak or any
appreciable permanent distortion. After testing, they shall be indelibly marked with the word TESTED to
show that they have complied with this test.
36 Marking of cylinders
Cylinders shall be indelibly marked to show that they have passed the test prescribed in clause 35, and
shall also bear the following marks:
a) The number of this British Standard and the BS type reference, grade and thickness,
e.g., BS 417, Y.78, Grade A, 3/16 inch.
b) The manufacturer’s name or identification mark.
c) The capacity in gallons, e.g., “73 gal”.
d) The maximum permissible working head in feet, e.g., “100 ft”.
The position of the marking shall be on the body near the top.
NOTE The mark BS 417 on the product is a claim by the manufacturer that it complies with the requirements of the Standard.
The British Standards Institution is the owner of the registered certification trade mark shown below. This mark can be used only by
