Culminating Task - Biology eBook

Culminating Task - Biology eBook

Your culminating task for this course will be the creation of an eBook which is worth 20% of your
final course mark. Your eBook will be titled “Biology in….”. You will choose a location to write about.
Choose your geographical area carefully, you want to make sure there is enough natural environment
in your area to connect to all the concepts of biology in this course. Some examples you may choose
could be:

• Biology in Canada • Biology in Northern British Columbia

• Biology in Fiji • Biology in Algonquin Park
• Biology in Ontario

Throughout the course you will be given prompts to create an “eBook chapter”. At the end of each unit you
will submit the eBook chapters for that unit you created to get feedback from your teacher. Then, at the
end of the course you submit your entire eBook for grading. It will be important that you read and consider
the feedback from your teacher at the end of each unit to help you edit and improve your eBook before
submitting the final product.
Here is a sample eBook titled Biology in Fiji. This eBook is different than the one that you will be creating.
Yours will not be this long or detailed. This one was created by an entire class of students together for
the same course you are currently working on (SBI3U). However, it gives you an idea how topics can be
presented.

eBook on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/biology-in-fiji/id856525007?mt=11

eBook in PDF format: https://www.scribd.com/document/193054478/Biology-in-Fiji

For your eBook you may choose to use any form of media. This could include video, audio, text and
images. If you are including any media that you did not create yourself, it is important that you include the
source and make it very clear that someone else has created that piece. Explain why you included it and
how it helps make your point.
It is time to set up your eBook file. Create a file and give it a name and save it. You could do this in any
word processor such as Microsoft Word, O365 or Google Docs. You may choose to try any of these other
options as well. These resources review other good options for creating eBooks.

• Google Slides: https://shakeuplearning.com/blog/how-to-create-an-ebook-with-google-slides/

• Canva: https://www.canva.com/create/ebooks/ (you may need to make each entry as a
separate file and submit separately if your file gets too big)
• PowerPoint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD5WUnA4B2g

eBook Chapter - Species

At this time you will draft an eBook chapter about a species from your geographic location. You can
choose any species of interest from your location. Your eBook chapter can be written in text or include
media that you create (video, audio, image, etc.). Any images or quotes you use must be sourced/
referenced.

Your chapter should include the following:

1. History of your species:

• Background Information: Photo, Scientific name, habitat, range, food sources.
• Ancestry: design and informative phylogenic tree that shows how your organism evolved.
2. Classification of your species:
• Using a chart, show how your species progresses through each Taxonomic Category
(Domain,Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species) in relation to other
species. Give some examples of other species in each Taxon group. You may use
pictures.
3. Biodiversity and human impacts:
• Biodiversity: What role does your species have in maintaining biodiversity? For
example, whatare the implications of this species becoming endangered or extinct?
What other species depend on this animal for survival? Are there any current threats to
this species survival?
• Human Impacts: How are humans impacting the survival of your species (positive and
negative)? Create an action plan for maintaining the survival and health of your
species.
4. Resources:
• Be sure to include a list of the resources you used to complete your task.

eBook Chapter - Monocot or Dicot?

You have had some practice creating scientific drawings. For this eBook chapter or entry your task is
to investigate flowering plants from your geographic area or region. Choose one flowering plant that
interests you. Take or find pictures of it. Compare it to your notes about monocots and dicots. Decide if
it is a monocot or dicot. You are to complete a scientific drawing of the plant and write a brief paragraph
explaining how you know it is a monocot or dicot. This can be put in your eBook with pictures of the
plant. As an extra challenge, try to find the scientific name for your plant. At the end of this unit you will
submit the eBook chapters you have created for feedback. This will give you time to use the feedback
provided to improve your work before submitting it for grading.

Success Criteria:

• I included a picture of my plant.

• I included a scientific drawing of my plant (following the rules for scientific drawings).
• I determined if my plant is a monocot or dicot and explained how I figured this out.
• My pictures show the characteristics that make it a monocot or dicot.
• I included the source of the images I used (if they were used from another website).

eBook Chapter - Plant Study

At this time you will draft an eBook chapter about a plant from your geographic location. You can
choose any vascular plant of interest from your location. Your eBook chapter can be written in text
or include media that you create (video, audio, image, etc.). Any images or quotes you use must be
sourced/referenced.

Choose a vascular plant from your location. Through research, or visiting/studying the actual plant,
interviewing experts, etc. share the following information about your plant.

NOTE: You do not need to answer every single question, but be sure to review the success criteria.

• What is the common name for your plant? Scientific name?

• What is the full taxonomic classification of this plant? (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus,
species)
• If your plant is a flowering plant, is it a monocot or dicot? How do you know this?
• Include a labeled diagram or image of the parts of the plant that you can see.
• How does your plant reproduce? What does it need to reproduce (ex. wind, bees, specific animals,
etc.)
• What type of role does your plant play in the ecosystem? What does it provide for animals?
Birds?Insects? Humans?
• Are there any threats to your plant?
• Are there more than one similar species of your plant in the same family? Example: palms,
mangroves or orchids. Describe the common characteristics of that family, and what makes each
species different.
• Does your plant bear fruit? Seeds? Describe them.
• Describe how water transports in and out of your plant. Use the scientific names for the tissues
used.
• Describe what factors affect the growth of this plant.
• Are there any threats to your plant? What things could damage the population?
• What do you know or can you find out about the evolution of this plant? Are there similar plants on
other islands that can be compared to this plant? If so, what things may have caused this plant to
adapt as it did to this location?

Success Criteria

• I included labeled anatomical drawings or images

• I discussed the anatomy of the plant
• I explained how water is transported in and out of the plant
• I explained what factors affect the growth of this plant
• I explained the reproductive mechanisms of this plant in detail. How are new plants of this type
created?

eBook Chapter – Human Impact on Evolution

This e-book chapter will be about an example of human impact on evolution. Find one example
where humans have impacted evolution in your geographic area. Some examples include
antibiotic resistance, pesticide resistance in plants, herbicide resistance, use of selective breeding
to get desired traits in a plant/animal and plant populations becoming shorter because they are
harvested a lot and the shorter ones are harder to see when harvesting.

Success Criteria:
• I have explained the pressure that humans put on the population.
• I have explained how the pressure by humans impacted the population over generations.
• I have explained the changed in the population over time

eBook Chapter - Speciation

For this chapter you will research and explain one possible method of speciation for a species from your
geographical area. This post will require more of a creative twist. You may be “hypothesizing” a method
of speciation if you cannot find exact information about your species.

So, for example, if my eBook is about Fiji, I may take a species of bird found on one island of Fiji and
explain how it is different from a similar species on another island or location. I would then propose
reasons for these differences. What pressures may have caused those differences? Are there
characteristics of the island that would make that species well adapted?

Success Criteria:

• I included a description of two species (one from my geographical area)

• I described how the “pressures” or characteristics of where they live caused them to evolve into
different species
• I connected this to one of the mechanisms of speciation
