The exercises are not a contest of ideas and opinions. 2. Listen while another person speaks. Do not speak at the same time. 3. Respect the opinions of others and understand where the person is coming from, Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion even if we do not agree with her/him. 4. Avoid being judgmental. Flash the second slide of PPT No. 7 (Introduction for the first activity) Values exist at the core of our nature; they are our core belief system. Ethics, our behaviour, reveal our values within an operating environment. Values and ethics do not exist separately from each other. Values are the core of what a person believes. It develops from childhood influenced by parents and other social institutions, Ethics (ethikos ~ arising froma habit) is the outward manifestation, the acting out ofa belief. In the first activity, you will be able to: 1, Identify the important gender and workplace values; and 2. Explain why these workplace values are important. Exercise No.2 Give each participant a copy of Worksheet No. 7. Ask them to check the work values that are most important to them. Give them 10 minutes to answer the worksheet. Identify the most important work values chosen by the trainees by tallying the number of trainees’ hands raised as you read each work value in the worksheet. These values are not always the same due to the fact that they are not determined by biological differences but are largely reflected by tradition and the sociocultural conditions in the society. WORK VALUES Work values are a set of standards that determine attitudes, choices and actions. Your work values are those things in your work life that you consider tobe important. It is crucial to know your work values if you want to find your ideal job. When you design your career based on your values, your motivation will greatly increase and your chances of success and fulfilment will greatly improve. = id Developing your values The first step in developing gender values is to develop your gender sensitivity and raise your gender awareness. Gender awareness is a way of seeing, a perspective-insights which form our understanding of people and society. It means looking at things with new eyes, which are constantly open. to new learning. Understanding the differences between sex and gender, developing the ability to identify gender issues and biases and appreciating the importance of gender sensitivity, gender equality and gender equity are all important in achieving a happy career life. They should also benefit equally from the resutt of development ‘Gender equality is therefore the equal valuing by society of both the similaties and differences between women and men, and the varying roles that they play. Gender equity moves beyond a focus on equal treatment. Gender equity isthe process of being far to women and men. It means giving to those who have less on the basis of needs, and taking steps to compensate for historical and social disadvantages that prevent women and men from ‘otherwise operating ona level playing eld. Assumptions incorporate biases in favor of existing gender relations and so tend to exclude women. Agender-sensitive/aware person is someone who recognizes that women and men are constrained in different and often unequal ways, and that they may consequently have differing and sometimes conflicting needs, interests and priorities. APPLICATION In order to deepen the realization and learning of the trainees, give out appropriate application or practice activity. Refer to the Application activity shown below. 1. Prepare metacards with written statements on it about certain beliefs and concepts of gender issues. Refer to the Table below which gives descriptions of a gender aware/sensitive person and a gender blind biased person. 2. Distribute the metacards to the trainees and ask them to reflect on the statement/s if they believe in it or not. 3. Post two metacards on the board, one written as “Gender aware/sensitive” while the other written as “Gender blind/biased”. 4, Categorize the trainees’ beliefs which will fall under the Gender aware/sensitive characteristic and the Gender blind/biased characteristic. Ask the trainees who answered YES to Statements 1-9 to post their metacards on the board under the metacard labeled Gender aware/sensitive, while those trainees whose answer is NO will post their metacards under the metacard labeled Gender blind/biased. On the other hand, those who answered YES to Statements 10-15, will post their metacards under Gender blind/biased, while oS those who answered NO will post their metacards under Gender aware/sensitive, Please note their reasons for believing and not believing in the statement. Your work values are those things in your work life that you consider to be important. List of Top Ten Work Values that Employers Look for in Employees 1. Strong work ethics Possesses willingness to work hard and smart. Learns the most efficient way to complete tasks and. finds ways to save time while completing daily assignments. Shows concern about his/her job and complete all projects while maintaining a positive attitude. Doing more than what is expected of the job.
