Inh b tors for Unsaturated Polyester Res ns

I
nh b tors are chem cal (http://www.turkchem.net/cobots-advantages- n-chem cal- ndustry.html) compounds,
wh ch prevent polymer zat on process of monomers or other react ve compounds. Su table compounds to be
used n Unsaturated Polyester Res ns are Qu nones and Phenol c compounds, wh ch are able to l berate weak
Hydrogen atoms.

These Hydrogen atoms react w th free rad cals from perox de decompos t on or w th a grow ng polymer cha n and
nh b t any further react on. Th s nh b t on react on w ll end, after all nh b tor molecules are consumed.

Inh b tors are therefore not only su table for enlarg ng the pot l fe of act vated res ns, but also to ncrease storage l fe of
pre-accelerated res ns.

Inh b tors are selected based on the r ab l ty to:

• Prevent gelat on of the unsaturated polyester dur ng the ester f cat on react on,
• Prevent gelat on dur ng blend ng of the polyester w th the v nyl monomer at elevated temperature,
• Impart good shelf l fe to the res n,
• A d n adjust ng gel t me,
• Exert a m n mum effect on subsequent cur ng of the res n after gelat on.

Many commerc al polyester res ns ncorporate a m xture of two or more nh b tors n order to ach eve opt mum
stab l ty w thout nterference w th the f nal cross-l nk ng polymer sat on process. If we g ve nformat on about the
nh b tors n Un var Solut ons product portfol o;

4-Tert.-Butyl Catechol

It s used as an nh b tor for ncreas ng pot l fe and gel t me of act vated or pre-accelerated unsaturated polyester res ns
at amb ent temperatures. Trade name for the techn cally pure and sol d form of th s product s ‘PERGASLOW BK-100’.
Its performance at amb ent temperature n d fferent systems s as follows;

1) lengthens the gel t me of a m xture of UP res n / perox de / accelerator.

Parabenzok non (PBQ)

SMC-BMC’n n ortam sıcaklığında kap süres n (pot l fe) artırır.

2,6-D -Tert.-Butyl Paracresole

It s used as an nh b tor for ncreas ng gel t me of unsaturated polyester res ns at amb ent temperatures. It does not
n uence cure t me. Trade name for the techn cally pure and sol d form of th s product s ‘PERGASLOW PK-100’. Its
performance at amb ent temperature n d fferent systems s as follows:
1) lengthens the shelf l fe of SMC and BMC at amb ent temperature,
2) lengthens the pot l fe of a m xture of UP res n / perox de at amb ent temperature.
The product s also ava lable n 40% solut on coded PERGASLOW PK-40.

It s used for lengthen ng the pot l fe of SMC and BMC at amb ent temperature.

Hydroqu none (HQ)

It s a commonly used nh b tor. It s very effect ve at protect ng the res n dur ng room temperature storage and
extend ng ts gel t me. It also ncreases the storage stab l ty and lengthens the pot l fe of SMC-BMC at amb ent
temperature.

Toluhydroqu none (THQ)

S m lar to Hydroqu none n propert es, however, the presence of a methyl group n the ortho pos t on n the
toluhydroqu none molecule prov des some sh eld ng effect. It also offers better solub l ty n styrene than HQ. It’s often
used as a cook stab l zer for h ghly react ve unsaturated polyesters. It has a m nor effect on cure.

1,4-Naphthoqu none (NQ)

A storage stab l zer n unsaturated polyester res ns

Mono-Tert-Butylhydroqu none (MTBHQ)

MTBHQ s an effect ve storage nh b tor for unsaturated polyesters and s also useful as a cook stab l zer for h ghly
react ve unsaturated polyesters. It offers excellent potency over a w de temperature range and caus ng only a
moderate prolongat on on res n cure at elevated temperatures.

It has the greatest solub l ty of the hydroqu none der vat ves. Along w th solub l ty, color s also good, mak ng t su table
for the use n appl cat ons that are sens t ve to color effects. MTBHQ s also very useful for the res n systems some
conta n ng h gh levels of male c anhydr de when good thermal stab l ty dur ng synthes s s requ red.

2,5-D -Tert-Butylhydroqu none (DTBHQ)
