Find the Find the Differences pictures from page 23, the Picture Story pictures from page 24, and the
cards from page 25. Put them on the table.

Part 1
The child sits at the table. Greet the child. Say My name is [teacher’s name]. What’s your name?
(Answer: the child’s name). How old are you? (Answer: the child’s age).
Show the child the Find the Differences pictures and ask the child to point out certain
differences. Say, for example, Look at these two pictures. They look the same, but some things are
different. Here, the bowl is empty (teacher points to the bowl in the picture on the left), but here, the
bowl is full / has strawberries (teacher points to the bowl in the picture on the right). Ask What other
different things can you see? Remember to provide praise for correct answers.

Show the child the Picture Story pictures and ask the child to finish the story. Tell the child the name
of the story and describe the first picture. Say, for example, These pictures show a story. It’s called
The Tired Dog. Look at the pictures first. Give the child about 15 seconds to look at the pictures.
Then say—as you point to the characters in the first picture—Lucy is playing with her new dog in
her backyard. Mom calls Lucy into the house. Now you tell the story.
(Answer: The child might say When Lucy goes to the backyard again, she can’t find the dog. Lucy is
sad. Dad helps her look for the dog outside. Then Dad goes inside and upstairs to look for the dog.
After that, Lucy and her Dad go into the bathroom. They find the dog sleeping under the rug.) Right!

Show the child the cards. Cover all cards but the first row. Say, for example, Now look at these four
pictures. One is different. The book is different. Point to the book. Then say—as you point to each
object—A lemon, a mango, and an orange are fruit. You eat them. You don’t eat a book, you read it.
Now cover the last two rows for the child to do the activity with the second row. Say, for example,
Now you tell me about these pictures. Which one is different?
(Answer: The child might say: The chair is different. The chicken, the sausage, and the burger are
food. You eat them. You don’t eat a chair, you sit on it.) Good!
Then cover the last row for the child to repeat the activity with the third row. (Answer: The child
might say: The waterfall is different. A tiger, a monkey, and a giraffe are animals. The waterfall isn’t
an animal.) Right!
Finally, cover all cards but the last row for the child to repeat the activity with the fourth row.
(Answer: The child might say The child washing the dishes is different. Doing a puzzle, roller-skating,
and playing video games are activities you do for fun / are hobbies. Washing the dishes is an activity
you do to help out / is a chore.) Excellent!
