Volleyball

:
A net separates the two teams of six players in the team sport of volleyball. Since Tokyo 1964, it has been
a part of the official schedule of the Summer Olympic Games. Each team competes to score points by
grounding a ball on the court of the opposing team. At the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, beach volleyball was
incorporated into the program. Sitting volleyball is the modified variation of volleyball played at the
summer paralympics.

Background:
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men’s Christian
Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who
found the new game of basketball too vigorous.

Importance:
The activities required when playing volleyball strengthen the upper body, arms, shoulders, thighs,
abdominals, and lower legs. In addition, volleyball improves hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and
balance. Last but not least, volleyball teaches teamwork and communication and is a great social activity.

Part of Body Used:

The muscles of the upper legs and hips; the gluteals, the hamstrings, and the quadriceps. The muscles of
the lower leg; the calf muscles- gastrocnemius and soleus, and the anterior tibialis muscle in the shin area.
