Snow Storm at ISU

[NORMAL, IL] – A man has been discovered to be unconscious due to a severe snowstorm in

the Illinois State University area.

Dr. John McHale, a professor at ISU, was found unconscious in the snow outside of Fell Hall

around 5:30 p.m. Senior Samantha Ross found Dr. McHale unconscious with a fallen branch on

top of him.

“I was on my way to dig out my car when I see Dr. McHale in the snow. I immediately rush over

to him to make sure he was okay. Then I called 9-1-1 to get him some help,” senior Samantha

Ross said.

He was rushed to BroMenn Hospital by helicopter around 5:45 p.m. He is being treated for

Frostbite and Hypothermia.

Snow began to fall yesterday at noon. There was 25 to 40 inches of snowfall in Normal, IL. This

storm is one of the largest snow storms since 1888. “The snow storm may last up to 2 weeks with

winds ranging from 50 to 60 miles per hour,” local meteorologist Mark James said. “I’ve never

seen a storm of this size in my entire career.”

A severe weather alert urges all Bloomington-Normal residents to stay in their homes and off the

roads. Students and staff of ISU received email and texts alerts about the severe weather

conditions at 1 p.m.

ISU is offering safe ride buses to students who commute to campus on foot.
