Comfort Access
Comfort Access is available as optional equipment SA322.
For vehicles with comfort access, the remote key will be called an ID transmitter.
Comfort Access contains the following functions:
- Keyless access to the vehicle

- Welcome light from 2.5 m approach to the vehicle

- From service pack 2018: automatic unlocking at about 1 m approach to the vehicle (vehicle direction)

- From service pack 2018: automatic locking while removing from vehicle from about 3 m

- Including ground lighting in the outside door handles and light carpet (optional)

- Including contactless opening and closing of the tailgate

The Comfort Access control occurs entirely within the Body Domain Controller (BDC). As master control unit for the central locking system, the
Body Domain Controller (BDC) has overall responsibility for the Comfort Access.

Note!
From service pack 2018 the vehicle can also be unlocked with a smartphone via the outside door handle electronics (NFC = near
field communication).

Brief component description

Note!
The following description does not go into detail about all possible equipment ranges of the comfort access (in dependence on the
model series, model, vehicle equipment and national-market version).
Various settings can be adjusted via iDrive (see also Owner's Handbook).

The following components are described for Comfort Access:

BDC Body Domain Controller

The body domain controller (BDC) is the central control unit in the body electronics. The Body Domain Controller is installed in the passenger's
side footwell. The central gateway module (ZGM) is a virtual independent control unit integrated in the Body Domain Controller (BDC).
The Body Domain Controller (BDC) is a newly developed control unit with many integrated functions. The aim is to reduce the number of
control units and improve component networking. At the same time, the optimisation of the wiring harness reduces the physical bus capacity.
The task of the central gateway module (ZGM) is to connect all bus systems. This combination allows general use of information from the
individual bus systems. The central gateway module (ZGM) is able to implement various reports and speeds on other bus systems. The
programming data are transferred to the vehicle by Ethernet via the central gateway module (ZGM).

ID transmitter
The ID transmitter allows the vehicle to be unlocked, locked or deadlocked via radio remote control.
If the vehicle is equipped with Comfort Access, the vehicle can be unlocked and/or locked without active use of the ID transmitter.
The radio signals from the ID transmitter are received by the remote control receiver and transferred to the Body Domain Controller (BDC).
Authentication of the radio signal is then performed within the Body Domain Controller. If the request is duly authorised, the Body Domain
Controller initiates unlocking or locking of the vehicle.

Remote control receiver

The radio signals from the ID transmitter are received by the remote control receiver. The remote control receiver routes the signals to the
Body Domain Controller (BDC).

Note!
The remote control receiver is connected via a local CAN bus to the BDC control unit.

The remote control receiver has a transmitter/receiver module. This enables communication to be established between ID transmitter and
remote control receiver. The radio signal is then demodulated, processed and checked in the remote control receiver. That means: The radio
signal from the ID transmitter contains a vehicle-specific constant 'value' which is checked by the remote control receiver. The information is
only passed to the Body Domain Controller (BDC) if this value is correct. This means: Radio signals from remote keys of other vehicles
(including those in the same product line) have no effect on the release and comfort access.
Authentication of the radio signal is then performed within the Body Domain Controller (BDC). If the request is duly authorised, the Body
Domain Controller (BDC) initiates unlocking or locking of the vehicle.

Exterior aerials and interior aerials

A connection between the ID transmitter and the Body Domain Controller (BDC) is established using the exterior aerials and the interior
aerials.
The aerials transmit on a frequency of 125 kHz. The wave emitted by the aerials are spherical in form. The aerials prompt the identification of
the ID transmitter to identify An ID transmitter belonging to the vehicle must be located in the transmission range of the external aerial in order
to respond to the request. The Body Domain Controller (BDC) also checks whether the ID transmitter has access authorisation for the vehicle.
If this is the case, unlocking of the doors or boot lid/tailgate is triggered. All the radio signals are encrypted and thus protected against
unauthorised access.
In unfavourable situations, it may not be possible to find the ID transmitter inside the vehicle. In this case, the Body Domain Controller (BDC)
will initiate a Check Control message in the instrument cluster (KOMBI). When a corresponding message is received, the ID transmitter needs
to be held vertically against the marking on the steering column. This is where the ring aerial can be found. The ring aerial is used for
communication between the transponder chip (in the ID transmitter) and the Body Domain Controller (BDC). This allows the Body Domain
Controller (BDC) to issue the start enable after successful identification. Within 10 seconds of placing the ID transmitter against the marking,
press the START-STOP button. The engine starts, providing that the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual gearbox) is
depressed at the same time.

Outside door handle electronics

The outside door handle electronics are located (depending on the series, model, vehicle equipment and national-market version) in the outer
door handle of the corresponding door.
Changes in door handle status are recorded by the sensors in the outside door handle electronics and transmitted to the Body Domain
Controller (BDC).
The sensors in the outside door handle electronics supply the following signals to the Body Domain Controller (BDC):
- Unlocking: when a hand reaches into the handle recess via capacitive sensor

- Locking and deadlocking: on contact with the sensitive surface of the door handle via capacitive sensor
The request to lock the vehicle is activated by pressing an outer door handle. The request is only processed if the driver's door is closed. The

door from which the request is being made must also be closed. A search for an ID transmitter is then carried out in the external area of the
vehicle via the exterior aerials. If a valid ID transmitter is found outside the vehicle, the vehicle is locked. To implement the lockout safety
device function, this is followed by a search for an identifier in the passenger compartment. If the identifier that was authenticated during
unlocking is also detected in the passenger compartment, the vehicle is unlocked again. Other identifiers belonging to the vehicle can remain
in the vehicle.

Door lock and lock contact

The driver's door lock allows mechanical locking and/or securing and unlocking of the vehicle. There are 2 drives in each door lock. The Body
Domain Controller (BDC) activates the electric motor. If the vehicle electrical system fails, the driver's door can be unlocked by using the
mechanical key. The door contact signals are recorded by the Body Domain Controller (BDC).

Tailgate lock
The operating points (rear lid button, passenger compartment, outer tailgate pushbutton) are used for electric unlocking of the rear lid lock
(hotel setting not engaged). The Body Domain Controller (BDC) is the master control unit. This means that the Body Domain Controller (BDC)
issues the release for unlocking the tailgate lock. The Body Domain Controller (BDC) activates the direct current motor of the release drive in
the tailgate lock, thereby triggering the tailgate lock to unlock.
The request to open the boot lid/tailgate of the vehicle is triggered by pressing the boot lid/tailgate pushbutton. If the vehicle is locked, a search
for an ID transmitter via the exterior aerials then takes place.
When the luggage compartment is closed, authentication is requested from the ID transmitter belonging to the vehicle via the luggage
compartment antennas. If an ID transmitter in the luggage compartment replies and no other ID transmitter outside the luggage compartment
replies, the boot lid/tailgate is opened again. This prevents an ID transmitter from being accidentally locked in the vehicle. If another ID
transmitter is found outside the luggage compartment, the tailgate remains closed. The ID transmitter that is in the luggage compartment is
blocked as a possible transmitter when the vehicle is next unlocked.

System functions

Note!
Comfort Access system functions vary depending on the model series, model, vehicle equipment and national-market version!

The following system functions are described for comfort access:

- Digital Key = BMW Digital Key

Digital Key = BMW Digital Key

The BMW Digital Key allows the vehicle to be unlocked and locked, and to be started, using a compatible smartphone. Prerequisite: Android
operating system, Samsung smartphone with near field communication (NFC) and an integrated security element
BMW Digital Key may not be available depending on your country. A digital ignition key must be installed on a compatible smartphone in order
that this smartphone can unlock and start a vehicle. Digital ignition keys are installed, managed and forwarded via the BMW Connected app.
See also Owner's Handbook.
A driver profile with individual settings can be assigned to a BMW Digital Key. If you use a digital key, always carry a vehicle key with you to
ensure that you can access the vehicle even if your smartphone fails. It is also advantageous to carry a remote control for situations in which
the vehicle has to be handed over to another person or to a service workshop. The remote control can then be handed over instead of the
smartphone.
Communications between the vehicle and the smartphone use near field communication (NFC). The vehicle is unlocked via the outside door
handle on the driver's side. The smartphone must be placed in the wireless charging station to register a BMW Digital Key and for engine start.
A BMW Digital Key will be recognised by the vehicle even if the smartphone is switched off.
