Engine Control for Propulsion

Objectives

Participants completing this course will be able to


recognise and describe the Engine Control for Propulsion
System, it’s unique components and control systems and
have a formal understanding of its operation and
applications for maintenance operations, fault
finding and troubleshooting.

This Presentation will define the equipment that is


included in the instrument panel system (SD) options
and to detail the individual components contained within
those SD option groups.

This image shows the separation of the system, the engine control is engine
Mounted, the rest is panel mounted. The ED-3 is connected direct to engine
ECM via a data link. Alarm and Safety System and the LAD are CIB mounted
and the remote panel is can connected to the LAD.

Summary of Installation Requirements for panels.

Wiring harnesses must be located where the harness will not be


subjected to physical damage or high temperatures and will not
interfere with normal engine room or pilot house activities.

All panel system components must remain in the “as-delivered”


condition from Cummins Marine. No electrical modification is
allowed, except for cutting holes for wire glands

Panels must be installed remote from the engine and properly


isolated from vibration. No engine mounted panels are allowed.

There are two system Versions for propulsion

QSK60-M Base Propulsion Panel System (SD 6011) - (CM500/Quantum Controller)

• Not suitable for vessels requiring Marine Society Classification.

• Contains CIB with optional Engine Room Panel,

• Includes Local Analog Panel and ED-3 digital display;

• Optional remote panels are also available.

There are two system Versions for propulsion
QSK60-M Propulsion Panel System with Alarm and Safety System (SD 6008) –
(CM500/Quantum Controller)

• Intended for vessels that require Marine Society Classification.

• Group contains CIB which includes Safety Module with options for

• Engine Room Panel,

• Remote Digital Panel and Remote Analog Panel.

• 12 sensors for ECM (Control), up to 35 Alarm sensors, and 5 Safety sensors.

Customer Interface Box

The CIB is the main point of connection


for Vessel and OEM systems. It must be
mounted remotely from the engine system.

Access to information from the engine


system and ship-side input connections
are provided in the panel with the use of
terminal strips.

There are four types of CIB for propulsion


that are available; Classed Propulsion,
Non-Classed Propulsion,

This is an examples of the Classed


Propulsion versions.

The following connections are provided on the bottom face of the CIB:

Connector C108: Marine OEM #1 (CM500 OEM 21 pin):

Connector C110: Marine OEM #2 (CM500 OEM 31 pin):

Connector C111: interface to ERP via Engine Room


Panel Extension Harness.

Connector C135: interface to ERP via Engine Room


Panel Extension Harness.

Connector C115: interface to separate alarm sensors


on engine via Engine Room harness.

Vessel Interface: this provides all electrical interfaces


between the engine and vessel. For details refer to
current wiring diagram.

The power module (PSMS) is the


power supply monitoring and
safety device, used in
propulsion and auxiliary
applications and is located
inside the CIB.
It’s purpose is to filter the DC power
from the two classed-required
power supplies and to
protect the CIB circuitry by the two
15 Amp blade fuses and the
three 2 Amp blade fuses.
There is a green indicator lamp for
each power supply.
The lamp will be lit when 24 VDC
is present.

4 Safety Module

The SM provides an independent


means for determining conditions
that require the engine to be shut
down. It reads dedicated sensor
outputs and has threshold settings
and programmable persistence
times for each.
• Coolant temp • Lube oil press
• Engine speed • Coolant pressure

When any of these thresholds is


exceeded for the specified
persistence period, it commands
engine shut down via the local
Emergency Stop circuit of the ECM.

The connections provided on the bottom of the ERP


consist of the following:

connecting to power switch, LAD controls and alarms,

LAD as well as 4-20 mA sensor outputs
for remote use, and CAN open output
for RAP.

The LAD is a standalone panel that is incorporated into both the ERP and
CIB panel assemblies. It utilizes dedicated 4-20 mA analog sensor outputs from
the engine, independent of the ECM, to provide display information.

Local Analog Display (LAD)
The LAD performs a self-test at start up.

Yellowish-green segments, red default icons and green bars and dials
are lit for three to five seconds.
Bars and dials turn red for three to five seconds.
Displays real-time values.

After the self-test, the screen displays


the current value present on the analog
card inputs, unless the configuration
serial link is connected and active.
In that case, the lamps remain red
as long as the serial link is active.

The configuration serial link is shipped


with the local analog display from
the factory.

Remote Analog Panel (RAP)
The RAP is a remote version
of the LAD. The RAP utilizes a
CAN Output from the LAD to
provide the display information
rather than analog signals.

Remote Analog Panel (RAP)
If the local analog display and the remote
analog panel need to be configured
when replaced in the field, the following
changes can be made by a Cummins
technician or end user using a personal
computer with HyperTerminal or other
telnet software and the configuration
serial link:

Gear oil pressure channel enabling or


disabling.

Gear oil pressure threshold setting

Gear oil pressure RPM inhibit setting

Metric versus Imperial units

Hour meter display.

ED-3 Display Functions

The ED-3 is a standalone display that provided ECM data via engine Datalink
communications. It is capable of displaying engine data in both text and
graphical formats. In addition, this display is capable of showing the active
and historical fault codes present during operation.

In addition to these major panel system components, there are modules


and harnesses that are required to ensure a properly functioning system.
These components include:

Base Propulsion Panel System Components

The QSK60 Propulsion Application electronic control and monitoring system


comes complete with the same array of sensors as the
Marine Auxiliary Application.

These sensors are connected to the CM500 controller that is installed on the
engine. The CM500 also provides SAE J1587 Datalink outputs that are
transmitted to the CIB via an ECM Interface Harness.
As in the Marine Auxiliary, all OEM interfaces are connected at the terminal
strips contained within the CIB. In addition to the CIB, an Engine Room Panel
(ERP) can be installed to visually monitor the functions of the propulsion system.

If the Cummins supplied ERP is not used, please refer to


MAB 0.15.00-02/02-2005 Controls Gauges and Alarm Engine Protection
for details on what is required for installation of OEM supplied
monitoring systems.

Panel Systems for Marine Society Classification

Please note, when the SD option group that includes the safety and alarm
system is chosen, the package only includes the on-engine sensors and
the system hardware in the CIB. It does not include any display and alarm
equipment for remote locations. The safety and alarm system package is
only available as an option intended to be integrated with 3rd party
monitoring equipment. No Cummins supplied remote panel system option
is available, except for the basic RAP and ED-3 displays.

The RAP and ED-3 do not display all of the data and alarms required for
classification; however they can be installed in addition to any
3rd party system.
