THE GEOGRAPICAL INDICATION OF VIRUPAKSHI
HILL BANANA GI-124

ABSTRACT

A geographical indication is used to categorize goods having special


characteristics originating from definite location and also used to find
agricultural and other manufactured goods are produced or processed in that
place. India as a member in WTO enacted the Geographical Indication of goods
[Registration and Protection] Act, 1999 and established Geographical Indication
Registry. The main feature of this enactment is to register and to provide better
protection of GI relating Goods. The goods prepared with Traditional
knowledge have more advantages. At presently there are 432 GI Tags in India
in that “Virupakshi Hill Banana” Falling in Class 31 for Horticulture Product –
Banana under No. 124 as of the date 12.05.2008 at Virupakshi (near Palani
Hills) Dindigul District. We have more varieties of banana in India apart from
all Virupakshi Hill banana has a different method of production like soil,
climate, planting material, season etc and has a different after cultivation
procedure makes the Banana more healthy and tasty. This banana is cultivated
on a perennial basis and normally, intercropped with coffee. Virupakshi Hill
Banana is famous for its individuality it does not get spoiled even when the skin
turns dark as the pulp has less moisture. The shelf life of the Banana is about 10
days under ambient temperature because of its specialty the Palani
Panchamirtham is prepared by Virupatchi Hill Banana to enhance the taste and
aroma of the panchamirtham . Though in previous year it affects from viral
disease and this genome is in endangered species now with the help of latest
farming Technology (tissue-culture). The delightful divine Hill Banana was
granted GI Tag in 2008.
