What’s In

In art elements, you have the line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color.
Artists manipulate these elements, mix them in with principles of design, and
create a piece of art. Not every work contains these elements, but at least
two. For example, a sculptor should have both form and space in his sculpture
because these elements are in three dimensions. They also can be made to appear
in two-dimensional works using perspective and shading.

The elements of art are essential for several reasons. First and foremost, a person
cannot create art without utilizing at least a few of them. Secondly, knowing the
elements of art enables us to describe what an artist has done, analyze what is
going on in a particular piece, and communicate our thoughts and findings using
a common language. It is the stylistic features that are included within an art
piece to help the artist communicate.
One may also think the principles of art are concepts that guide the arrangement
and structure of art elements in art. The way these principles are applied affects
the overall message and feeling of a particular artwork.
A good design makes a product functional and valuable although the process
involved is far more than what happens on the artboard. The use of these
principles ensures that the intended message and feeling required to make a
product functional is well communicated to the user/viewer.

What’s New
TRUE OR FALSE:
Directions: Write T if the statement is True and F is the statement is False.

______ 1. A person cannot create an art without utilizing at least a few

elements.

______ 2. A good design is one that is functional and makes a product valuable.

______ 3. The elements of art enable us to describe what an artist has done and
to analyze what is going on in a particular piece.

______ 4. Art elements refer to the stylistic characteristics that are included in a
2
piece of art to help the artist communicate.

______ 5. Elements and principles of art do not affect your origami project.

What is It?
There are seven most common elements of art. These are the
following: line, shape, texture, form, space, color, and value - with the
additions of marking and materiality. When analyzing these intentionally
used elements, the viewer is guided to a more in-depth understanding of
the work.

Elements of art

Line – is a mark with greater length than width. It can be horizontal,

vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin.
Shape – is a closed line. It can be geometric, like squares and circles, or
organic like free-form or natural shapes. Shapes are flat and can express
length and width.
Form – is a three-dimensional shape expressing length, width, and depth.
Balls, cylinder, boxes, and pyramids are forms.
Space - is the area between and around objects. The space around objects
is often called negative space. Negative space has shape. Space can also
refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional in visual art.
When we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
Color – is the light reflected off the objects. Every color has three main
characteristics:
• hue - the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.
• value - how light or dark it is
• intensity -how bright or dull it is
Texture – is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Texture can be
rough of smooth, soft or hard. Texture does not always feel like it is
supposed to. For example, a drawing of a porcupine may look prickly, but
if you touch the drawing, the paper is still smooth.

Principles of design
The principles of art describe the ways the artists use the elements of art in a
work of art.

3
Balance – is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture,
and space. If the design were a scale, these elements should be balanced
to make the design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used
on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in
asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In
radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may
be similar.
Emphasis – is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention.
Usually, the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other
areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Movement – is the path the viewer’s eyes takes through the work of art,
often on focal points. This movement can be directed by the lines, edges,
shape, and color within the work of art.
Pattern – is the repetition of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

Repetition – works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The
repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
Proportion – is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts,
or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure,
proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the
body.
Rhythm – is created when one or more elements of design are used
repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a
mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is
essential.
Variety – is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s
attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of
art.
Unity – is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which
creates a sense of completeness.
