4. Coolant

10. Binding energy is 0.5

1. **Δmxc2
2. Δmxc
3. Δmxc4
4. Δm

11. Compare both 2-stroke petrol engine & 4-stroke petrol engine and interpret 02
which produces more power and why

Solution:
2 stroke petrol engine. (1 mark)
2 stroke petrol engine is compact, develops more power than 4 stroke due
more power for displacement of piston.
In 2 stroke petrol engine there is one power stroke for every revolution of
crankshaft whereas in 4 stroke petrol engine there one power stroke for
every two revolutions of crankshaft. (1 mark)
12. Choose whether fissile or fertile material is suitable as fuel for nuclear 02
fission. Justify your answer with example

Solution: Fissile material (01 mark)

238
92U cannot be used as fuel as it cannot be undergo fissioned by thermal
neutrons of energy 0.025 eV

Whereas 92U235 is a fissile material which can be fissioned by thermal

neutrons. (01 mark)
13. Compute the mass defect & binding energy (BE) per nucleon for the 03
following nuclei 1. 8O16- 15.994 u , 2. 92U235- 235.0439 u. (Mass Defect=
Zmp+(A-Z)mn -m(experimental mass)), (mp= 1.007825 u, mn=1.008665 u
) (BE= Mass Defect x 931 MeV

Solution:
1. 8O16- 15.994 u

Mass Defect= Zmp+(A-Z)mn -m

= 8x1.007885+ (16-8)x1.008665- 15.994
= 0.138 u (0.5 mark)
BE= 0.138x931 MeV= 128.533 MeV (0.5 mark)
BE/ nucleon= 128.533/16= 8.033 MeV (0.5 mark)

235
2. 92U - 235.0439 u

Mass Defect= Zmp+(A-Z)mn -m

= 92x1.007885+ (235-92)x1.008665- 235.0439
= 1.915 u (0.5 mark)
BE= 1.915 x931 MeV= 1782.86 MeV (0.5 mark)

BE/ nucleon= 1782.86/16= 7.586 MeV (0.5 mark)

14. An industry worker has to analyze between two boiler designs (Lamont 03
Boiler and Benson Boiler) and select one of them wherein the requirements
are as follows:

1. There should not be any bubble formation while generating steam.

2. The boiler should operate above the critical pressure.

Elaborate on the appropriate boiler design meeting these requirements and

describe it’s working along with neat labelled diagram.
Solution:

Identify Benson boiler (0.5 mark)

(1.5 mark)

1. In Benson boiler the difficulty of bubble formation

experienced in Lamont boiler is avoided by raising the boiler
pressure to critical pressure (221.6Bar) .

2.This boiler takes the feed water in at one end and discharges it
as superheated steam at the other end. Feed water flows through
the radiant tube section to evaporate partly. Where major part of
the water is converted in to steam. The remaining water is
evaporated in the convection evaporator tubes.

3.The saturated high pressure steam is further passes through

super heater before leaving the unit. (1 mark)
