Objectives:

• Explain biodiversity and stability

• Determine the organisms and their value in the
locality through a table
• Appreciate each organism in the ecosystem
through their value awareness
• Recognize the importance of living things found in
the community through the activity provided
BIODIVERSITY AND
STABILITY
BIODIVERSITY
• Is a term that describes
how varied living things
are in a specific area.
BIODIVERSITY
• Organisms are part of biodiversity
a n d m ay b e e co n o m i ca l l y a n d
ecologically valuable.
• These organisms are important in
maintaining balance in the
ecosystem as they performing their
specific roles.
• Biodiversity makes the ecosystem
balance and stable.
Why organisms are important?
• Their products are sources of food, medicine, clothing, shelter, and
energy.
• Some species maintain the quality of natural bodies of water; some
prevent soil erosion and floods, cycle minerals in the soil and absorb
pollutants.
• Others feed on insects and pests which control population of
organisms in a certain environment.
STABILITY
• The resilience to withstand changes that may occur in the
environment.

The value of species can be
divided into three categories

DIRECT ECONOMIC INDIRECT ECONOMIC AESTHETIC VALUE

VALUE VALUE
1. Direct economic value –
the species are sources
of the basic needs of
human such as food,
medicine, clothing,
shelter, and energy.
- Lagundi- Vitext negundo is
extracted for cough syrup
production.
• - Vinblastine and
vinscristine are two
chemicals that have been
extracted from this plant
(Tsitsirika) are used to
treat cancer.
2. Indirect economic value
– a species has an
indirect economic value
if there are benefits
produced by the
organism without using
them.

LANDSLIDE AND FLOODS
3. Aesthetic value – the species
provides visual or artistic
enjoyment. Example: forested
landscape and calming beauty
of a natural park, or spiritual
meditation like the Prayer
Mountains.
Directions: Identify five organisms that can be found in your locality and
are valuable to your life. Then you will classify the value by putting a
happy face () on the space column.

• After learning about the biodiversity and stability,
what are effective ways to educate others about
the importance of biodiversity and the need for
environmental protection?
• What makes biodiversity important to people?
Assignment
• On a 1/2 crosswise, write your reflection on the given situation.
Now that you appreciated the importance of biodiversity, try to
examine how the population of organisms in an ecosystem affect
biodiversity? Write two sentences only.
