PREDATORS AND PREY IN THE GARDEN

Imagine a garden with a stream running through it. This is a habitat for toads, slugs and plants. The
toads feed on slugs. The slugs feed on the plants. Normally, the numbers of toads and slugs reach a
balance. Something rather unusual happened last year. Look at the following graph:

1. (a) What happened to the toad population up to point A?

The population of toads started to decrease.
(b) Toad population size normally relies on the survival of their tadpoles. Suggest what may have
happened this year.
Toads may have been unable to survive and reproduce as much since there was a decrease in
the population of slugs, which is the food of toads.

2. (a) Describe and explain what effect this change in the toad population had on the slug
population up to point A.
The slug population was still dropping slightly after point A as the existing toad population of
that time still consumed the slugs. Though the toad population decreased later on, there was
still the remaining population from earlier that affected the population of slugs.
(b) Describe and explain what effect this change in the slug population had on the plant
population up to point A.
There was an increase in the plant population as the slug population was still decreasing.
Lesser slugs meant more plants because slugs were the consumers of plants.
3. (a) Describe and explain what has happened to the toad population up to point B.
The population of toads continued to fall drastically.
(b) Why does the slug population start to rise after point B?
The population of slugs can be seen rising after the population of toads reduced. This is due
to the reason that as there were fewer toads in the area, the threat to the slug population
reduced. As toads consume slugs, there would be smaller numbers of slugs dying; meaning
that it provided them the opportunity to survive and reproduce.
(c) What effect did this have on the plant population?
The population of plants began to reduce.

4. Why is there a time delay between the slug population rising after point B and the toad population
rising after point C?
The time delay exists because a population can not magically appear out of nowhere. It takes time
for species to breed, replicate and grow in order to develop an entire population of their own. That
mandatory time span is showcased by the time delay.,

5. The toad and slug populations both increase then fall towards point D. What factors other than
predation might have caused them to decrease at the same time?
Abiotic factors could play a huge role in decreasing the population of various types of species at
once. Examples could be droughts, rainfalls, natural disasters, soil changes, atmospheric gasses
and many other factors.
