Cancer

Teaching Ideas

Starter
Pupils could work in pairs/group/independently to write down anything they already know about cancer/tumours. Groups or
individuals can feed back to the rest of the class.

Main Activities
Cancer
Pupils could write down the sentences in their books and fill in the gaps where the pictures are.

Tumours
Once pupils have been shown the slide on the two types of cancers, they could put the statements in the correct columns in the
table. This can be drawn in their books or can be completed on the Table for Tumours Activity Sheet This could be distributed
by a pupil as you are going through the PowerPoint slide on the board.

Exam Questions
Pupils can check their learning by answering exam questions based on the two types of tumours. These can be answered in books
or on the Table for Tumours Activity Sheet.

Risk Factors
Pupils could be given information sheets about the risk factors that increase the chance of getting cancer, they can produce a
mind map from the information on the information sheets. They can draw the mind map in their books or be given the Cancer
Mind Map Activity Sheet. They could then be asked to peer assess their work by swapping with someone on their table. To avoid
pupils moving around the classroom the sheets could be distributed one between two.

Angelina Jolie
Pupils could discuss in pairs the reason why Angelina Jolie took the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy and her ovaries
removed. Answers to expect: to prevent breast cancer as after tests showed she had a faulty gene, people with the gene are at
a greater risk of developing cancer. Pupils may discuss the pros and cons of the procedure – care needs to be taken in these
discussions as some pupils may know someone at risk.

Cancer and the Risk Factors

Pupils could be given some data on the risk of death from smoking and then asked to analyse the data.

Plenary
What advice would you give to someone to reduce their risk of cancer over their lifetime?
Pupils could be set a question to work together as a table or work on as an independent task.
