A MAN WITH A MISSION
Owen Forrest, one of today’s most famous sculptors, talks about work, inspiration and his new book.
Clean Shaven, with shoulder-length hair, the artist Owen Forrest looks younger than 35. Interviewing him is
quite hard, not because he’s a difficult person, but because he’s so agreeable. Make a comment about his work and
how it challenges ideas about life in the modern city, and he’ll smile and answer, “Yes, I see your point.” Or he’ll cut
you off in the middle of a question to offer you some more coffee.
He isn’t trying to be vague; he’s just a shy young man from central England. Perhaps that’s why he seems such
a down-to-earth person. Far from having a typical artist’s temperament, he comes across more like a farmer who just
happened to wander into a giant studio in London and start working. When I asked him how it felt to represent Britain
at the 2007 Paris Biennale Art Show, he replied that it was “very nice” and that he was rather surprised but, of course,
pleased to have been chosen. His modesty is rather charming, and highly unusual in an artist.
It’s not often that someone of Forrest’s fame will sit down to answer the ordinary person’s questions on such
topics as where his inspiration comes from, what it’s like to sculpt without machines in today’s mechanized world, or
simply why he does it. Forrest says he was prompted to write My hands, My Vision by a sense that many people’s
interest in his art extended beyond mere everyday conversation. “I was asked very intelligent questions by people who
weren’t in the art world, from taxi drivers to people in the supermarket queues. It made me realize that people have an
interest in what I do which goes beyond browsing in galleries and museums,” he says.
My Hands, My Vision avoids the biographical and mainly focuses on Forrests inspiration. “The events in my
life haven’t had a huge influence on my work,” he says, though he admits his father’s obsession with wood carving and
carpentry have played a role. The book aims to open up the process of how he creates his sculptures, how his
imagination is sparked by an idea or perhaps something he happens to see on the street. He seeks to replace the sense
of false mystery which surrounds many artists with a more realistic window into the kind of physical and mental work
it takes to be a sculptor.
“The publicity an artist gets when they show a new series of works in the media is a double-edged sword,”
Forrest points out. “You get attention, but you also come in for a lot of criticism from the media. First, they ask you to
talk about your work and then they create their own interpretations, regardless of what you tell them your work
actually says or means.”
Forrest’s personal working style is to build up each sculpture piece by piece. He says that this process is not
widely understood. “There’s no real vocabulary for discussing whether the artist is skillful, or how intelligent his work
is.”
There is still something mysterious about the creation of an amazing sculpture. “It’s very personal, very
emotional. It’s like building a new friendship,” Owen says. “When you are building a new friendship, you have periods
of being very close and times when you are separate. It’s similar with sculpting. You can spend days working non-stop,
and then you find you need to take a break for a week or so. Once a sculpture is finished, the process you went through
to create it remains with you, like an old friend.”
Owen includes examples of his early work in My Hands, My Vision. “I wanted to make a point about all those
who criticized my early work as rubbish. It wasn’t all bad, and it has affected the work I create today, as well as my
approach to sculpting. It was an important building block in my desire to create sculptures where people are challenged
not only to view the world in a different way, but their own place in that world.” His success seems to prove he has

The Guinness Book of World Records describes Ranulph Fiennes as the world’s greatest living explorer. His
expeditions include the first polar circumnavigation of the Earth and the first unsupported crossing of the Antarctic
continent on foot. He has been up the White Nile in a hovercraft, and parachuted onto Europe’s highest glacier. An
obsession with diet and fitness comes with the territory, and for years Fiennes has fine-tuned his body to cope with the

physical fitness had gone and suffered a heart attack - not while planting a flag in a no-man’s- land, but while boarding
a plane - it came as something of a surprise.
Even what happened, lesser mortals like myself might be forgiven for wondering whether the benefits of
following a healthy lifestyle are all they’re racked up to be. Why bother exerting all that effort if in the end survival
turns out to be a lottery? Of course fitness and diet are only part of the story. “Some people live a healthy lifestyle and
still succumb to heart problems.” health expert Alison Shaw explains. Genetics and family history also play a crucial
role in determining who will achieve longevity. “It could all be a question of genes”, she says, “but then some people
never have a trace of the disease even though their family would seem to make them prime targets.”
Whether or not some people are genetically programmed to have a higher chance of heart disease, there are
steps they can take to reduce their risks. A healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and reduced levels of
saturated fat helps prevent obesity and stops fatty deposits forming in the arteries and blocking them. Smoking,
incidentally, has the opposite effect, as nicotine increases the heart rate and makes the blood clot more easily.
Exercise is highly beneficial as it reduces both the pulse rate and blood pressure so minimizing strain on the
heart as it pumps blood round the body. It also helps to keep the artery walls more elastic. “Whether you’ve got a
family history of heart disease or not, everybody should be living a healthy lifestyle,” Shaw says. “We wouldn’t want
people to stop looking after themselves.”
But can you look after yourself too much? On the subject of exercise, the standard recommendation is to take five
sessions of “moderate” exercise a week, where moderate is a little more than brisk walking. “We need to be very
careful when were doing extreme sports or endurance event,” says health expert Len Almond. “Extreme physical stress
can impose almost impossible demands on the body’s ability to recover. The strain of endurance events such as
exploration force biochemical changes in the human body. The physiological response to that kind of activity will be
extreme... and how the body overcomes that is bound to leave some kind of legacy.” So could Fiennes’s love for
exploration and endurance events have contributed to his condition? “It could have had an effect, or there may be
genetic predisposition and an event could have made it worse,” say Almond. “We haven’t done enough research in this
area.”
This is changing though. There is growing interest in sports medicine, a field that arguably began as long ago as
490BC when the first person to run the marathon ran the 26 miles from the town of Marathon to Athens with news of a
victory over the Persians. The man, a soldier called Pheidippides, collapsed as soon as he arrived, and the cause of his
sudden demise is not known. However, scientists are using athletes like him to answer questions about the effects of
extreme exercise on the heart. One group, at the University of Inrsbruck in Austria, studied cyclists taking part in a race
called the Tyronlean Otztaler Radmarathon, a one-day event that covers 230km with an altitude change of 5,500m.
They were interested in one particular enzyme, high concentrations of which are found in those who have suffered a
heart attack. The scientists found that levels of this chemical increased in 13 of the 38 cyclists who completed the race.
The largest increases were seen in the youngest, fastest cyclists who had trained the hardest. Similar increases in the
chemical have been found in competitors in the Hawaii Ironman triathlon and in cross-country skiers.
Most of us will never put our bodies to such severe tests. But if when you hear about someone like Fiennes you
ask whether exercise is worth it, I advise you to consider your own priorities. Personally, I subscribe to this adage sent

Every year, thousands of students fly to the United States to spend their holidays working at summer camps. In
return, they get a free return flight, full board, pocket money and the chance to travel. Lucy Gribble joined Camp
America and spent eight weeks working at a summer camp for six to sixteen- year-olds.
I applied at the last minute and was so thrilled at the prospect of spending the holidays doing something more
exciting than working in the local supermarket, that I hastily accepted the only job left- in the camp laundry.
I started to have my doubts while squashed between the windsurfing instructor and the aerobic teacher during the
bumpy three-hour ride to the camp, about 90 miles from New York City. Then, on arrival I was told by the camp
director that I would be doing the washing for 200 children - on my own. For the first week, the party sent out by the
job agency - seven English students and one Welsh, one Pole and one Australian - became a full-time cleaning squad,
getting the place ready for grand opening.
We swept out dead birds from the bunkrooms, scrubbed the lavatories, gymnasium and kitchen, polished the
cooking equipment, mowed the lawns, put up the sports nets, and lugged any luggage sent on ahead to the bedrooms.
After the childrens arrival I had to work from 8.45 in the morning to 10.30 at night to get all my work done. “Don’t
worry”, said the director. “The kids always throw all their clothes in the wash after five minutes in the first week”. I
smiled through gritted teeth.
Considering there was no hot water in the laundry and the rickety old machines, the washing came out
remarkably well. But with so many clothes to wash and dry, some washing did get mixed up. I had six-year- olds
marching up and telling me their parents would be very angry if I did not find their favourite sweater.
The kitchen workers and myself found ourselves at the bottom of the camp's class system. We were never
invited to join in the evening activities and at the talent show we were the only six out of the entire camp to be
excluded. When we did manage to get out of the camp, our evenings tended to consist of eating ice-cream in the local
gas station or driving 20 miles to a restaurant to drink cheap lemonade. Despite the unexciting venues, we made the
best of the situation and enjoyed a lot of laughs throughout the summer.
The camp itself had a large lake and excellent sporting activities. But because organized activities for the
children carried on into the evening we usually only got the chance to use the tennis courts or the swimming pool.
I shared a room with three 18-year-old girls from New York. They had never been away from home before and spent
most of the night screaming with excitement. They each had three trunks full of clothes and thought it was hilarious
that I had only a rucksack. On some nights the only way to get any rest was to “go sick” and sleep in the medical
centre.
The camp food was poor with child sized portions, fresh fruit and vegetables were rare. One catering worker
even stood over the pineapple rings checking that you took only one each.
The plus points of the camp were the beautiful parkland setting, meeting a great bunch of traveling companions
and managing to work my way through far more of my course books for my English degree than I would have done
back home.
And without Camp Americas free flight to the US - and a rail ticket from my parents - I would never have seen
Niagara Falls, climbed the Empire State building, visited Washington DC or had my picture taken with Mickey Mouse
at Disney World, all of which I did after the camp closed down.

Until fairly recently, explaining the presence of human beings in Australia was not such a problem. At the
beginning of the twentieth century, it was thought that Aborigines had been on the continent for no more than 400
years. As recently as the 1960s, the time-frame was estimated to be perhaps 8,000 years. Then in 1969 a geologist from
the Australian National University in Canberra was poking around on the shores of a long-dried lake bed called Mungo
in a dry and lonely corner of New South Wales when something caught his eye. It was the skeleton of a woman
sticking out slightly from a sandbank. The bones were collected and sent off for carbon dating. When the report came
back, it showed that the woman had died 23,000 years ago. Since then, other finds have pushed the date back further.
Today the evidence points to an arrival date of at least 45,000 years ago but probably more like 60,000.
The first occupants of Australia could not have walked there because at no point in human times has Australia
not been an island. They could not have arisen independently because Australia has no apelike creatures from which
humans could have descended. The first arrivals could only have come by sea, presumably from Timor or the
Indonesian archipelago, and here is where the problems arise.
In order to put Homo sapiens in Australia you must accept that at a point in time so remote that it precedes the
known rise of behaviourally modern humans, there lived ỉn southern Asia a people so advanced that they were fishing
inshore waters from boats of some sort. Never mind that the archaeological record shows no one else on earth doing
this for another 30,000 years.
Next, we have to explain what led them to cross at least sixty miles of open sea to reach a land they could
hardly have known was there. The scenario that is usually described is of a simple fishing craft probably little more
than a floating platform - accidentally carried out to sea probably in one of the sudden storms that are characteristic of
this area. This craft then drifted helplessly for some days before washing up on a beach in northern Australia. So far, so
good.
The question that naturally arises - but is seldom asked - is how you get a new population out of this. If its a
lone fisherman who is carried off to Australia, then clearly he must find his way back to his homeland to report his
discovery and persuade enough people to come with him to start a colony. This suggests, of course, the possession of
considerable sailing skills.
By any measure this is a staggeringly momentous achievement. And how much notice is paid to it? Well, ask
yourself the last time when you read anything about it. When was the last time in any context concerning human
movements and the rise of civilisations that you saw even a passing mention of the role of aborigines? They are the
planets invisible people.
A big part of the problem is that for most of us it is nearly impossible to grasp what an extraordinary span of
time we are considering here. Assume for the sake of argument that the Aborigines arrived 60,000 years ago (that is the
figure used by Roger Lewin of Havard in Principles of Evolution, a standard text). On that scale, the total period of
European occupation of Australia represents about 0.3 percent of.the total. In other words, for the first 99.7 per cent of
its inhabited history, the Aborigines had Australia to themselves. They have been there an unimaginably long time.

chocolate every single day? I ask Leona that very same question. “I’m so used to the smell. I’ve worked here for so
long I don’t even notice it anymore,” Leona admits. To my mind, that is an absolute tragedy. But she later confesses
that she still eats a few pieces of chocolate every day.
I observe Leona as she expertly handles customers who are desperate to get their orders in on time. The
factory’s chocolate has just been given the highest rating in a recent consumer report and needless to say, the orders
have been flooding in. The boom in business could explain her high spirits, which I must admit is infectious, and I
can’t help feeling excited about being let into this hidden world.
At that moment, Peter Moon enters from a door at the back, dressed in a white hat and a heavy-duty rubber
apron. After polite introductions, he immediately launches into his favourite topic. “Did you know that chocolate
comes from the bean of the Theobroma Cacao tree, which means ‘food of the gods’?” he asks. “The Aztecs considered
cacao to be man’s inheritance from Quetzalcoatl, the god of air. Cacao seeds were made into a drink with the addition
of maize and vanilla. The Spaniards observed its use and carried back beans to Spain, where it rapidly became a drink
for the wealthy.” I can tell this man lives and breathes what he does.
I follow Peter into the packing room, which is bursting with multicoloured cellophane and ribbons that are
waiting to decorate chocolate eggs arranged in lines. I watch as staff work, carefully wrapping Easter treats. Over 60
staff is employed at the factory and, from appearances, I don’t doubt their commitment. “My team is extremely
focused. We are like a family here,” Peter declares proudly. I couldn’t agree more. I immediately get the impression
that this is no ordinary factory.
And then, as he and I enter the adjoining room, I try to pull myself together. I make a great effort to control
my excitement, reminding myself that the real purpose of my visit is to gather information to write an article. I A
conveyor belt transports small cubes of sweet centres towards a chocolate waterfall, with the promise of being
enveloped in a thick, luxurious layer of chocolate. Moon picks up a tray of half-finished mini chocolate eggs. Each egg

the growing trend of chocolate connoisseurs who hold tasting evenings with friends. They enjoy trying to name the
origins of the coca bean that the chocolate is made from, like those who appreciate fine wine. As I leave, I learn that

Darren Bell is a well-known household name and has three best-sellers. I met him to find out what his secret
was. He writes in such a natural, easy-going style I wasn’t surprised when he told me he had been writing stories from
a very young age. “I’ve always enjoyed writing; I used to write short stories when I was at school and really enjoyed
the opportunity to be creative and let my imagination run wild.” When I asked how his family and friends reacted to
his creative writing he explained that it was largely thanks to their positive feedback that he had pursued a career as a
writer. He said his teachers and parents always encouraged him to write and to enter competitions; he won first writing
competition at school when he was just 7 years old. “My story was printed in the local newspaper, it was really
exciting and my Mum still has a copy of the paper somewhere.” “Did you ever feel very different from your school
friends?” I asked him. “Not at all.” he said. “We did all the normal things like watch football together, go out on our
bikes and so on. The only difference was that I would be more likely to have a notebook in my bag and might
sometimes write ideas down, but my friends were used to that, it didn’t feel strange and no-one ever said anything
about it.” I asked how his passion for writing developed as he got older and how he found his particular fictional style.

wrote all sorts of different articles but at the end of the day after trying all sorts of different writing types he decided he

characters seem believable otherwise people won’t connect with the story. "I always make an effort to research my
subject matter properly as there will always be someone out there who really does know about whatever I’m talking
about and I don’t want anybody to read my books and think I’m talking nonsense.”
I asked him where he got inspiration from for his unusual storylines and he openly admitted that it was very
boring everyday events. "When I write I start by thinking of a real situation and real people and then imagine what they
might do if something unexpected or unusual happened. I like to write about how different people react and how this
affects their relationships with one another. He added that one thing that he always tried to ensure was that his stories
had a clear and satisfying ending. "I don’t like to leave any loose endings.” That’s not to say sad things don’t happen in
my novels because they do and any story where everyone is happy and only good things happen would be very
unrealistic, but I don’t want readers to finish my novels feeling depressed, so I like to finish on a positive note.”
And finally what is his key to success? According to Darren the most important thing is to have a great team of
friends and family behind you to help you and support you. "I am lucky to have a very supportive and understanding
family and numerous friends, who have been fantastic and helped by reading endless drafts of my work and giving

On my 69th birthday, my dear wife gave me one week in a French language school. Six years ago we bought a
holiday home in the southwest of France. My wife speaks the language fluently, having read French at university, but I
often complained about the problem I had understanding our French neighbours.
The course my wife had chosen was to be very intensive. The working day would start at 8.15 and end at 10.30
at night. French had to be spoken at all times. Certainly there were times when I thought of the school as a kind of open
prison. There weren’t any locks on the door except to keep intruders out, but nobody, as far as I know, left the premises

Let me tell you about my fellow students. There were twenty-four of us from no fewer than eleven countries
from Finland to Venezuela. The sexes were evenly represented. In age, we ranged from thirties to late sixties. Five
were absolute beginners, but none of us was fluent. The reasons for our being there varied considerably but most were
attending for professional or business reasons.
As soon as dinner was over on the first evening, we were given the first of two comprehensive multiple choice
tests to establish our level. I didn’t do too badly at the grammar, but I found I was absolutely hopeless at
comprehension.
The next morning the serious work began - and continued without a break apart from meals and sleep until the
following Friday evening. I was placed in a group with four others, a Norwegian woman MP, a Dutchman, an
American from the Museum of Modern Art in Philadelphia, and a young English woman who was taking a job in
Marseilles. Our teacher was Nathalie, very bright and jolly and wonderfully patient with our dreadful accents and
endless mistakes.
At 6.20 p.m. most of US were allowed out to play - but many stayed on to do further revision with their
textbooks and cassettes, or they put on their Walkmans to work by the swimming pool. Some were taking even mo#
intensive courses and had private tuition before dinner. After dinner, we would watch the television news and be cross-
examined as to what we had understood - in my case pathetically little, though perhaps I had a slightly better ear by the
end of the week.
Most people reckoned that, however exhausting, they had got what they came for. Some were staying on for a
second or third week; others intended to come back the next year. Of course we had a complaint or two. I would have
preferred to be in a group of three rather than five, since two of our bunch slowed up our progress, and I would have
appreciated more help in spoken French and less time spent on reflexive verbs and prepositions. But by the end I was
certainly more confident in comprehension and pronunciation. What made the course a success? Mostly the teachers
who were, without exception, a wonderful team: cheerful, enthusiastic and patient.

Organic Directory lists thousands of organic shops. And where else could you learn about where your food has come
from, chat with your friendly neighbourhood herb farmer and find yourself stuffed full of delicious samples of cheese,
beef and spicy cider while buying your groceries?
“It’s a bit of a Catch-22,” says Fearnly Whittingstall. “The customers need a wide range of poduce and the
farmers need enough customers to make it worth their while. The more people make the commiment, the better and
more frequent these markets will become.”
For the lazy, there’s an even easier option. The Organic Directory, which can be found online at
www.soilassociation.org, lists a staggering number of box delivery schemes that distribute seasonal produce from
locations all over the country. They range from the basic to the amazingly comprehensive.
But a word of warning: seasonal food may be fresher, tastier and a huge relief for the environment (peas don’t need to
be air-freighted from Zimbabwe, for example), but you cant give Mother Nature a shopping list. With most schemes,
you get what you’re given. It’s an inspiring challenge for adventurous cooks, but several kilos of lovely, seasonal
carrots won’t be much use if your dinner party was depending on the ingredients for an apricot souffle.
Even for those of us who are wedded to the supermarket, healthy organic food doesn’t have to be just a good
intention. Some supermarkets keep their organic products together in a dedicated section, while others store organic
versions of their products alongside non-organic stock.
You will also notice that much organic produce in supermarkets comes pre-packaged. This is to avoid any

bus stops have been carefully designed so that they are level with the bus. They are tube shaped and have ramps to
provide easy access for everyone.
Curitiba has grown dramatically over the years. In 1950 300,000 people lived there, now the population is 1.8
million. However, even from the beginning the needs of the city had to be balanced with the needs of the environment.
Fortunately, this has had great economic benefits for the economy. Income per capita is 60% higher than the national
average. The architect who led the city’s growth in the 1960s was so popular he later became the city’s mayor. One big
challenge that the city has faced throughout its development is flooding. The city has had to find ways to protect itself
from flooding which as affected the city centre for many years. Curitiba wanted to find a solution which worked with
nature. The solution they came up with involved creating a number of lakes in the city’s parks which could hold flood
water. Also no buildings were allowed to be built in areas which had a risk of flooding. One of the most beautiful
buildings in the city is the university. It is called the free university of environment and was built using reclaimed
eucalyptus poles. You can study a wide range of subjects there although of course it offers many different

Computer games are the latest media scare. If you believe the hype, they’re highly addictive and almost as
dangerous as cigarettes or alcohol. Features of gaming dwell on the horror stories - the players who stare at a monitor
for days, weeks or months at a time, barely pausing to sleep or eat, never mind study or socialize. Mistakenly
convinced that gaming ruins grades and lives, parents and teachers then demand that teenagers immediately put down
their joysticks and switch off their computers. Some even call for all games to be banned! But is this concern really
justified? Gaming is a hugely popular hobby, with millions of players worldwide. Surely not all of these people are
hopeless addicts and loners?
Helen Mackay is one player who contradicts the stereotype. She is both a high-flying student at a prestigious
US university, and a site administrator on EverTalk - a chatroom where fans of the online game EverQuest swap ideas
and games cheats. But she wasn’t always an enthusiast. “Until last year, my experience of computers was limited to
checking emails and downloading music, and I prided myself on not being very technologically minded, in other
words, not being a geek! I’d never been heard of EverQuest until my boyfriend Tom bought a subscription. Back then I
didn’t get the appeal and frankly, I thought Tom was too old for that kind of stuff. But I held my tongue, convinced
he’d soon get fed up and log out for the last time.”
“When months went by and he still showed no signs of losing interest, I got increasingly bothered. I even
