What exactly is the concept of Ethical food?

It refers to the moral consequences of food choices, both those made by humans and animals.
Common concerns are damage to the environment, exploitive labor practices, food shortages for
others, inhumane treatment of food animals, and the unintended effects of food policy. While the
term ethical foods embraces organics, it is more broadly scoped to include products that are
'natural', 'fairtrade', 'free range', 'animal welfare friendly', 'environmentally responsible' and
'sustainably produced'
Ethical food choices: Choose an Ethical Diet That Is Right for You and the Planet

As it were, there are no concrete rules for ethical and sustainable eating, and it will look a little
different for everyone. Some people will feel the need to eliminate all animal products, whereas
others can’t even comprehend a world in which cheese does not exist. It’s important to find a
balance of foods that works for you and then make the most ethical decisions you can for those
choices.
Reduce the Amount of Meat You Eat

Meat products, beef, in particular, have become a very unethical food choice. Producing meat takes
a far greater toll on the environment than vegetables. The reason all this has come to be is due
largely to overconsumption. As consumers, we buy too much meat, eat too much meat, and waste
too much meat. Indeed, the demand for meat has grown unsustainable, and the only way to lessen
that demand is to consume less product.
Making Ethical Food Choices at the Grocery: Support Local Farms and Shops at Farmers’ Markets

One of the most impactful ethical eating choices you can make is to buy food from the local farmers
in your area. The farm may sell its products through your local grocery or sell from the farms
themselves. Some even allow the public to come harvest crops for themselves or even sell you
animals to have butchered. Farmers’ markets are also a great place to go for ethical foods. There,
you’ll find most, if not all, the food items produced in your area in one convenient spot. These will be
some of the more ethical food choices you can make, as these products are made in small batches
using ethical and sustainable practices by people in your very own community.
Look for Fair Trade Foods

Issues surrounding workers’ rights are prevalent throughout the global agricultural industry. Many
foods, including oranges, strawberries, chocolate, and coffee, are often picked by enslaved workers.
Purchasing food with fair trade labels ensures workers’ rights are protected, empowers farmers,
supports responsible companies, and protects the environment. Look for Fair Trade Certified and
Fairtrade International labels when shopping.
Ethical food production

Ethical production therefore considers animal welfare. In the European Union the Lisbon contract
recognises animals as emotional beings, meaning that they are capable of feeling pleasure and pain.
As a consequence, the European Commission has adopted a new strategy to improve animal welfare
conditions: the way they are housed, fed, transported and slaughtered. Although there is no
universally agreed definition of what animal welfare is the World Organisation for Animal Health
uses a summary of the Five Freedoms of animal welfare as a guiding principle.

Killing of animals: world problems
Shark killing

In seas and ocean across the world, these animals are being hunted to extinction. On average 3
sharks are killed every second, or over 70 million a year. These are distressing statistics, but sharks
don't have the same appeal as dolphins, so we don't feel much empathy for them. For 400 million
years sharks have played a critical role in maintaining balanced, healthy marine ecosystems. Sharks
are apex predators and the caretakers of our oceans. Based on current evidence, marine biologist
predict that losing this caretaker could bring about a significant rise in the number of smaller
predators like stingrays. An imbalance in the food chain could ultimately lead to the collapse of the
underwater ecosystem, with reduced fish population and more pollution.
