2.0 Finding/Discussion

2.1 Discussion 1

One of the most dangerous works may well be a pizza delivery. Just ask Domino’s Pizza.
Pizza chain’s drivers were involved in a reported 20 fatalities. The company now says
the actual total is less than that, but it won’t give out the number on the advice of
lawyers. They may be including the pizza delivery management and include how ethical
the pizza delivery drivers.

Overnight Deliveries
Federal Express, which also has a time-sensitive guarantee, has had only two fatalities
In several years, says company spokesman Armand Schneider. Comparison is difficult
Its happen because Federal Express has some 20,000 full time drivers who make
overnight deliveries, while Domino’s has 75,000 to 80,000 part-time drivers, often in
high school or college. Other than that, overnight deliveries that because of unethical
like, selfish individual that doesn’t care about drivers’ safety and energy. This may cause
highly risk of an accident.

Drive Speed
The speed of our system is in the store. “says Domino spokesman Ron Hingst.I dually,
the pizza should be ready to leave the store 8 ½ minutes after it was ordered, leaving
the driver 21 ½ minutes to drive within two-mile service area. If the pizza is not ready
to go within 25 minutes, it is automatically marked late. Customers are refunded $3 if
their pizza is not delivered within 30 minutes of their order. This may cause the
driver drive speed and unethically may hit a traffic light that can cause an accident
over him or other people.

7|Page
Along with that, an immoral of individual that ordered overnight without care of driver
safety that can cause a coidentities immoral management of delivery also that doesn’t
care of their delivery worker and think of them as robots that had no feeling. This also
may cause the driver stressful and make the driver no enthusiasm to work.
This can be a serious problem that can ruin the driver life. With that, The driver daily
life may be unstable and get more worst if they have a family.

Discussion 2 & 3

Several people died as a result of Domino's "30 minutes or less" guarantee, according to a 1993
lawsuit. Delivery drivers drove dangerously in order to deliver pizzas on time, causing scores of
accidents and killing more than 20 people throughout the 1980s. In the 30 minutes or less
lawsuit, a St. Louis woman won a $78 million decision against Domino's. As a result, Domino's
abandoned its guarantee. Domino's began promising pizza in under 30 minutes in 1979. In the
1980s, the 30-minute delivery guarantee propelled the once-small business to 5,000 outlets by
the end of the decade. Customers were so taken with the promise that they switched off their
porch lights to deceive the system. People began to complain about Domino's delivery drivers
causing accidents at the same time. By 1989, more than 20 people had been killed in crashes
involving Domino's drivers. The number of complaints filed against the company progressively
climbed, with many claiming that drivers were irresponsible in order to achieve the company's
30-minute commitment. As a result, one franchise owner paid a cop to monitor Domino's drivers
to make sure they weren't breaching any rules.
First and foremost, in order to determine which parties are to blame, we must first understand
what ethics is, as it is the most basic element that everybody requires in their everyday lives. To
put it simply, ethics is a set of "principles that contain behavioural guidelines to judge what is
right and wrong." Ethics is critical in both life and business. Aside from that, one of the most
crucial qualities that someone should have been morality. Morality refers to societal standards,
values, and beliefs that define what is right and wrong for a person or a group. Without both
ethics and morality, there will be an increase in crime, particularly among Domino's delivery
drivers and ordinary residents. As a result, those elements are regarded as the most commonly
required by people in this generation.
The public's view is critical for any firm to preserve its reputation and create a positive outcome
in order for the company to continue developing around the country. This may be witnessed
when Domino's receives public outrage because of how the public's view of safety can be
influenced not only for someone who worked for the firm but also for the company's owner. As a

9|Page
result, we will explore how the public's perception of safety influenced either Domino's more or
the thirty-minute guarantee.

The public's perception of safety problems impacted Domino's

To begin with, Domino's Pizza is widely regarded as one of the most well-known pizza brands in
the world. Dominos rapidly expanded throughout the 1970s. The chain's 200th store opened in
1978. By 1979, the chain had expanded to 287 locations. The 30 minutes or it's free guarantee
was introduced by Domino's the same year. These strategies were clearly effective, as Domino's
saw explosive growth. From 1978 to 1989, there were 200 stores. Dominos was the country's
fastest-growing pizza company in 1985. Over a two-year period, Domino's sales surpassed $1
billion, and the company opened over 1,300 new locations. This amount of success has put
Domino’s pizza in the spot light as people nowadays tend to eat fast food because of the
delicious taste and the cheap value which is so affordable.
However, those attention that Domino’s get from the public has turned to a negative outcome.
This can be seen when the Domino’s company stocks started to fall after receiving numerous
complaints. This has led to many shareholders decided to sell their shares to prevent themselves
from losing huge amount of money. Those couldn’t get any better when a citizen sues Dominos
for breaching their policy which led to an accident involving the victims. Hence, we could say
that the public’s perception of safety problem impacted a huge part of Domino’s.

The public's perception of safety problems impacted the thirty-minute guarantee

Dominos introduced the "30 minutes or it's free" guarantee in 1979. The guarantee established
Domino's as the fast delivery company in a competitive market. Customers were drawn to the
guarantee because they could get a pizza in 30 minutes or for free. Over a two-year period,
Domino's sales surpassed $1 billion, and the company opened over 1,300 new locations.
According to Domino's owner Tom Monaghan, the 30-minute delivery guarantee created a
"public perception of reckless driving and irresponsibility."
More than 20 people were killed in collisions involving Domino's drivers by 1989. The number
of lawsuits filed against the company increased steadily, with many claiming that drivers were
negligent in order to meet the 30-minute guarantee. Domino's rules have put a lot of pressure on
drivers to break the speed limit or drive dangerously in order to get pizzas there for free, causing

10 | P a g e
the store to lose money. In the late 1980s or early 1990s, a Domino’s pizza delivery driver
caused a bad car wreck while attempting to get the pizza to the destination on time. Following
that incident, Dominos discontinued that policy. Finally, it is undeniable that the public's
perception of safety issues influenced Domino's entire thirty-minute guarantee.

Discussion 4

Based on this question we will discuss a few things that will be facing between the employee
and the company if an accident issue at workplace happens what will the employee and the
company will affected from the incident. Besides that, at the first discussion we discuss the
responsibility to contribute to SOCSO between employer and employee.

Contribution to SOCSO both between employers and employee

In Malaysia every employer responsible to complying with the states workplace safety and
health laws known as SOCSO (Social Security Organization) also referred as (PERKESO)
(Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial) basically the purpose of this organization is to give social
security protection. Both employers and employee should contribute to this organization funds.
The funding is deduction from the total salary which is an Act 1969 by providing Malaysia
employee social security and safety during working. Employer need to contribute 1.75 % from
the total salary of employee, while employee need to contribute 0.5% of their total monthly
salary. Total of amount contribution (employer and employee) will go toward SOCSO fund. This
is important for the security towards the employee in case of workplace injuries, emergencies,
occupational sickness and death during working. If a company or business model fail to follow
this contribution to SOCSO the company will facing the law action and penalty because this is
one of the responsibility the company towards their employee

Employee lost their job, company reputation affected

Individual who involved with danger or accident at the workplace maybe will facing the risk
loss of their job because of the permanent disability after the accident at the same time the

11 | P a g e
company reputation will be affected because if an accident happen especially in big company,
community will judges the company did not have proper security for their employee at the
workplace because of this situation the company will facing a lot of procedure that need to be
clarify to the public and law institution why this incident happen their employee, they have to
provide strength prove to make sure their company reputation not affected.

Employee need to wait long time for their compensation, the company need to paid all the bill of
medical and legal services

Individual who involved the accident at the workplace they need to wait for long time to get
their compensation, from this situation automatically will affected their economy to survive
before they get the compensation from the company. Besides that, the employee also has to wait
and give their corporation to the process of the law to investigate their case. In the other side,
company also will be facing problem because they have to paid all the cost for legal services and
paid for all medical bill that needed by the employee. Company needs to paid all the cost for
legal services such as lawyer to resolve any work place accident issue and medical compensation
is compulsory for the company to paid all the bill treatment that needed by the employee such as
hospital bill, treatment, operation and also medicine.
From these three answers we can conclude that not only one parties will be affected if an
accident at workplace issue happens, both will be affected between the company and also the
employee. Safety at the workplace is very important that need to take serious action both
between the company and also all the employee. The company compulsory to provide all the
safety at the workplace and trained their employee well about the safety before start working to
make sure their safety at the workplace is in well prepared condition this is important to make
sure the risk of the accident at the work place can be reduce, besides that if an accident happen
the company can give strong prove that they already do the right thing and well prepared about
their employee safety.

For the employee is compulsory to follow all the rules and regulation about safety at the
workplace so from this action can reduce the risk of the accident at the workplace from happen
because if an accident happen there is a lot of risk will be facing by the employee so “prevention

12 | P a g e
is better than cure” as ethical employer and employee should not take for granted about safety at
the workplace this is a serious issue should be taken action both between the company and also
employers.

From this question we can identify the important of the safety rule and regulation at the
workplace towards business model and to the individual referred to the employee.

Discussion 5

One of the top pizza delivery services in the world is Dominoes. The business is a pioneer in the
fast-food sector and has a distinctive business and operational model. According to the research,
this company's staff and workers don't portray the best brand quality and aren't particularly
professional. The two biggest players in the fast-food industry, MacDonald Incorporation, and
Subways are major competitors that Domino’s Pizza Incorporation is currently up against. The
purpose of this report, which aims to provide an evaluation of the strategies, is to highlight the
importance of the efficiency and effectiveness of the strategies Domino's is currently pursuing in
deterministic mining of the company's dynamics in the future.
Ethics is defined as determining whether or not people's actions are acceptable. The moral
principle includes behavioural codes that help to determine what is right and wrong. People learn
and adapt to ethics and moral principles rationally through various categories such as upbringing,
socialization, experience, and culture. We can learn about upbringing from our elders or family
members. What circle of friends we have is what we call socialization. Aside from that,
experience is something we have had in the past that has had an impact on our lives. Finally,
culture is something that is instilled in children from an early age. For example, our parents
taught us as children to respect older people and others.
This kind of ethics can be defined as wrong behaviour for college students who give wrong
directions to make it difficult for pizza delivery to find the destination to deliver the pizza. Not to
mention it also makes the driver’s day harder by wasting their time. This will also make drivers
under pressure and will lead to accidents. This will endanger the lives of every driver because
they want to catch up with other orders so as not to get complaints from their customers.

13 | P a g e
Selfishness
College students that purposefully provided wrong directions are or can be described as selfish,
they do not know the risk that the pizza delivery driver needs to take. It can lead to a dangerous
situation for the driver. People like this do not give a shit about others and do their own thing for
their good. This is why they are called selfish which is delinquency.

Inhuman
Moreover, a situation like this sometimes occurs because there are people that do not pity other
people that are trying to work and earn money. Usually, college students, do not have any moral
objectivism which is considering certain acts as objectively right or wrong, independent of
human opinion doesn’t take into consideration people’s opinions.

However, this college student's behaviour is very immoral for what he did to the drivers. This
will make drivers emotional while driving which can cause serious accidents. This happens as
well as the occurrence of accidents that increase every year. In addition, if given an address to a
place that can endanger the lives of drivers, they will face problems if anything happens at that
time.

Kant’s Ethics
According to Kant’s ethics, with this imperative, a person's conduct is ethically correct if and
only if, in executing the action, the person does not utilize others just as a tool for achieving his
or her interests, but also respects their ability to choose freely what they want. Employees, for
instance, may be hired for their labour as well as their abilities, skills, and knowledge, but they
must always be treated with respect as fellow humans.

The categorical imperative offers clear guidelines for moral decision-making that do not take the
effects into account, such as the fact that lying, cheating, and greed are always wrong. In line
with human rights, the categorical imperative emphasizes human aspects rather than using other
people as a means to an end.

Importance of ethics in life

14 | P a g e
We value each person's right to privacy, freedom of speech, and material wealth, but we also
value the happiness that comes from sharing and praising others. We place a high value on
kindness, decency, justice, and gratitude. We will all agree that ethics is essential to life if these
values among others become the benchmarks for a society's quality of life and wellbeing.
Ethics is concerned with the moral principles that guide and constrain one's behaviour. The only
societies that can sustain economic growth, prosperity, and well-being are moral. Without a
doubt, only moral societies can preserve civilization and respect due to people as the universe's
watchdogs.

Care about drivers

As customers, we must cooperate with the drivers who deliver our orders, for example, pizza. we
need to care for the drivers so that the drivers can deliver your order safely. In addition, giving
the correct address to the drivers can make their work easier. If we can work with drivers, they
can arrange their travel time to avoid traffic jams and even accidents. With this, the drivers can
carry out their responsibilities and carry out their work to be completed.

In conclusion, as a college student, don't give the wrong address to get a free pizza. this will
harm their company and also waste their time just to find the customer who gave the wrong
address. we must obey ethics. we as human beings living on this earth should be kind to all
people regardless of their rank or their job and respect each other among ourselves. with this, we
can live in a very harmonious and happy atmosphere.

15 | P a g e
Discussion 6

To sum up the whole situation regarding the situation between Domino’s at its 30 minutes
guarantee, I would conclude that the offer made by Domino’s have their own pros and cons. The
pros that we can see is Dominos stock has skyrocketing that also made Domino’s the most
famous pizza brand not only in the country but also in the world. Here's why. Domino's pizza
comes with a 30-minute guarantee from the time an order is placed. If the time taken to deliver
the pizza is more than 30 minutes, the pizza will become free. So, this is how the 30 minutes
divvy up. From order to oven, it should not take more than 4 minutes. Since the oven takes six
minutes to bake, cutting, packing and pick-up make up for, say, another five minutes. And
delivery time should never exceed eight minutes. Add all that-it's a neat 23 minutes.
Other than that, as we explained in the previous discussions, Domino’s pizza 30 minutes
guarantee has a lot of cons that we’ll be discussing in this finding. According to reports,
Domino’s is currently struggling to deliver its pizza in 30 minutes or less. The chain has even
admitted that it has gotten slower this year with customers experiencing longer delivery times.
During a recent earnings call, Domino’s CEO Ritch Allison said, “With the challenges that
we’ve had in staffing, we haven’t made the service gains and improvements that I would like to
see here in 2021.” Adding that fixing its delivery times “are a big area of focus for us as we look
going forward”. It is interesting to note that labour shortages faced all around that nation at the
moment are the cause of the delays at Domino’s locations as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
The pizza chain is planning to hire more drivers and address productivity. “We are spending a lot
of time looking at how we can get more efficient in our stores. And frankly, how we can deliver
better delivery times with the same or, in some cases, even fewer drivers,” said Ritch Allison.
Furthermore, Domino’s 30 minutes guarantee has come to an end when a huge number of people
began to complain about the accidents caused by Domino's delivery drivers. By 1989, collisions
involving Domino's drivers accounted for more than 20 fatalities. The number of lawsuits against

16 | P a g e
the company steadily increased, with many claiming drivers were negligent in order to meet the
30-minute guarantee. In response, one franchise owner hired a police officer to follow Domino's
drivers to ensure they didn't break any laws. Hence, we would conclude that Domino’s 30
minutes guarantee has caused a bid messed for the public safety thus leading for many people to
boycott Domino’s pizza brand.

Can business profitability override the importance of safeguarding society and its surroundings?
To understand the significance of protecting society and its surroundings to business
profitability, entrepreneur, it is necessary to first examine the major tenets of corporate social
responsibility (CSR) and the underlying reason for which this concept was conceived. Few
business directives can override the core mission of maximising shareholder wealth, which today
primarily means increasing quarterly profits. Such a narrow focus on one variable over such a
short period of time leads to a limited view of what constitutes business success.
When a company operates in an ethical and sustainable manner and addresses its environmental
and social impacts, this is referred to as corporate social responsibility (CSR). This entails taking
into account human rights, the community, the environment, and the society in which it operates.
It is critical that your company operates in a manner that demonstrates social responsibility.
Although it is not a legal requirement, it is considered good practise to consider social and
environmental issues. Consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of social
responsibility and actively seek products from ethical businesses. CSR demonstrates that you are
a company that cares about more than just the issues that affect your profit margins, which will
attract customers who share your values. As a result, operating sustainably makes good business
sense.
There are few advantages that a company can gain from protecting society and its surroundings.
One of the most obvious advantages that a company can gain is a better public image. This is
critical because consumers evaluate your public image when deciding whether or not to buy
from you. Something as simple as staff members volunteering an hour a week at a charity
demonstrates that you are a brand that cares about others. As a result, you'll appear much more
appealing to customers. Following that, raise brand awareness and recognition. This information
will spread if the company commits to ethical practises. As a result, more people will hear about
their brand, increasing brand awareness.

17 | P a g e
Furthermore, the advantages that the company will gain are a competitive advantage. A company
can differentiate itself from competitors in the industry by embracing CSR. The company
establishes itself as one that is willing to go the extra mile by taking into account social and
environmental factors. The next one is that it can increase customer engagement. Companies that
use sustainable systems should shout it from the rooftops. Last but not least, increased employee
benefits. When a company embraces CSR, it provides a variety of benefits to its employees. The
company's workplace will be a more positive and productive place to work, and by encouraging
things like volunteering, personal and professional growth will be encouraged. As a result of the
discussion, it is confirmed that business profitability can trump the importance of protecting
society and its surroundings.

Any ethics theories that you could relate to this scenario?

Because the ethical decision is not always obvious to all, ethics is not always black and white.
Even leaders are capable of failing to act ethically all of the time. Recent decisions have had an
impact on two leaders. People are probably already aware of what it means to be ethical, which
is to know right from wrong and to recognise when one is being practised instead of the other.
Acting ethically entails more than just following all applicable laws and regulations. It also
entails being truthful, not causing harm to others, competing fairly, and refusing to prioritise
your own interests over those of your company, its owners, and its employees.
Based on the previous discussion, the ethical theory that represents the entire scenario is Virtue
Ethics. The main focus of virtue ethics is a person's honesty and morality. It states that good
habits such as honesty and generosity make a person moral and virtuous. It guides a person
without establishing specific rules for resolving ethical complexities. They allow us to pursue the
ideals we've chosen. Virtues include honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, fidelity,
integrity, fairness, self-control, and prudence. What we can observe from the Virtue Ethics
example is that when someone lacks honesty and morality in their daily life, it will result in a
negative outcome, such as the accident that occurred between the Dominos delivery and the
victim. As a result, Virtue Ethics asserted that if morality is not practised, society will be in
disarray.
Furthermore, Deontological Ethics was discussed as an ethical theory that covered the entire
scenario. According to deontological ethics, some activities are ethically required regardless of

18 | P a g e
their implications for human wellbeing. Such lines as "duty for the sake of duty," "virtue is its
own reward," and "Let justice be done even if the skies collapse" is descriptive of such ethics.
This may be demonstrated when some Dominos delivery riders declare that they have no
intention of breaking the traffic law, but in order to meet the company's and the customer's 30-
minute commitment, they end up disobeying basic rules, resulting in a traffic accident involving
public victims. As a result, Deontological Ethics are crucial in our lives because we must
remember that every action, we take has repercussions.
As a conclusion, practising ethics on a daily basis is crucial since it is a portion of responsibility
that everyone must carry in order for the world in which we live to stay a comfortable place and
to generate a harmonious society. Former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam once said,
"Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. There is harmony in
the home when there is beauty in the character. There is order in the nation when there is
harmony in the home. When there is peace in the country, there is peace in the globe". As a
result, people should never underestimate the value of ethics in society.

19 | P a g e
3.0 Conclusion

Based on the report, we can see that Domino’s couldn’t ensure the safety of the driver and
immoral individual and college students that have a selfishness, inhuman behavior. That happen
because they did not prioritize the driver mental, health and physical. We must know that the
driver has a limited energy and not a robot. Why can’t we be a moral person that have feelings
toward others that do their job to make our life easier. Therefore, we must have an understanding
to employees, because that can ensure their mental and health keep stable. If this happen, the
employees must be cheerful and no stress when they do their responsibility.

Other than that, there a similar standard with danger to individual vs a business model. We can
see that how safety will impact to the organization in a business. Beside it, we know that how
struggle the delivery drivers take their risk to deliver pizza on time. The driver takes their risk
with drive speed and dangerously to make sure that the pizza delivered on time. If this happens,
other people that saw the drivers drive so dangerous, they will think that the drivers unethical
and immoral. And they will plant the thought that the driver’s delivery unethical and immoral. If
they know how struggle the drivers do their job, they will understand that the driver’s delivery
job is hard more then they think. Therefore, society needs to have an attitude of knowing others
people work.

However, Domino’s management should be more humane attitude, without self-importance that
want to make their service impressive. They need to know that human need energy, stable
physical and mental to do their job. Why don’t we think if we were in their place and do the job
they do? We are also not sure whether we are capable of doing the job or not. Lastly, humans are

20 | P a g e
not robots to be used continuously for the benefit of something. We should need an ethical and
moral attitude in our life. So, people will live in peace and healthy.
