Printed and bound in Great Britain by The Cromwell Press Ltd., Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire PREFACE These Proceedings contain both the invited and contributed papers to be presented at NEC-91, the fourth international conference on Nonlinear Engineering Computations. Earlier conferences in the series were held in Swansea (1980), Barcelona (1984) and Dubrovnik (1986). At the time these proceedings are going to press, the NEC-91 Conference is scheduled to take place in Split, Croatia, Yugoslavia, but if the situation will not allow it, the conference will take place in Swansea, Wales, U.K. Nonlinear problems and nonlinear computations arise in a very diverse range of engineering applications. The computational strategies utilised in solving different classes of nonlinear problems may be particular to the application area concerned, but there is a considerable commonality and overlap between the fundamental computational algorithms and technologies employed. The papers have been organised into 8 sections SECTION 1 - Solution Procedures SECTION 2 - Plates, Shells, Buckling SECTION 8 - Constitutive Models, Plasticity, Localisation SECTION 4 - Forming, Contact Problems SECTION 5 - Thermal Problems, Fluid Flow SECTION 6 - Impact, Blast, Chaos SECTION 7 - Transport Problems, Diffusion SECTION 8 - Modelling, Design, Novel Applications We hope that the conference will act as a forum for scientists and engineers from diverse disciplines to discuss the computational aspects of nonlinear engineering analysis in order that a cross fertilisation of ideas and concepts may be encouraged. Finally, the editors would also like to thank the members of the Technical Advisory Panel for their support and the authors for their cooperation and patience during this very trying time.
