SL Site Selection

SL should be installed in a straight section of channel, avoiding any

curves and abrupt changes in elevation.
• Try to find an area with uniform flow conditions and low turbulence.
• Look for a clean and consistent cross-section, with minimal chance of
sedimentation/vegetation buildup
• Consider large water level changes carefully
• Recommended at least ten channel widths down-stream or upstream of control
points (gates) and flow disturbances.
• Usually mount in the middle of the water column or the location of highest
velocity
• Do a beam check!!
• Use the real-time level sensor to ensure level mounting
• Aspect ratio is always important when recommending a SL and when installing
a SL

4
Aspect Ratio

• SonTek’s rule of thumb aspect ratio is 20:1

• Can vary based on environmental conditions
• SonTek’s narrowband technology is better at this than RDIs

5
SL Canal Mount

• Allows deployment and retrieval of instrument to same

location
• Extra “Add-on” sections to extend length
• Aluminum construction
• Fits all SLs

Trouble Connecting?

Here are some Troubleshooting Tips!

1) Check your power supply
2) Check all cables and connections
3) Are you using a USB to Serial adapter?
1) If no, you should be
2) If yes, do you have the latest driver installed? D2XX Driver
4) Have you determined what COM port you are using from Device
Manager?
5) Have you tried a System reset?
6) Have you tried power cycling?
