Communication, Not Only Tools But Also Organizational Needs

Talking about communication means we are talking about the process of

delivering and receiving an information and message. If Edwin Emery defined
communication as the art of conveying information, attitudes and ideas to others,
then Goldhaber defines it as the process of creating and exchanging messages in a
network of relationships that depend on each other to cope with uncertain
environments or changing environments. The difference in definition is common,
and there is no need to worry. Because, apart from these two experts there are many
definitions of communication out there. The important thing that needs to be
underlined from both definitions is that communication is the process of conveying
messages to others, even further addressed in a network of relationships or
organizations. From that definition then came an organizational communication
terminology.
A person in the course of his life will never be separated from the process of
interaction. Humans can’t solve everything on their own so need to interact with
other people or parties who in their development require an institution or
organization. Organization is a social unit in the form of organs that have their own
division of labor but are related to each other in order to achieve a certain goal.
Organization becomes an important part of human life in order to achieve common
goals and ideals. A social unit can be said to be an organization if there are organs
or elements that carry out their respective duties.
Karl Weick, an expert who pioneered systems approaches in the study of
organizational communication, revealed that organizations will thrive when
members have freedom and interactive communication. Organization is a dynamic
open system. Therefore, the communication process is needed in order to create an
exchange of messages between its members. When the exchange of messages
between members of the organization runs smoothly and effectively then there is
the role of organizational communication to overcome the uncertain environment
can be created.
An organization has special characteristics that have a structure, pattern of
interaction, authority, personnel and interdependence with the aim of achieving
common goals. From these characteristics, communication has become a basic
requirement that must be met in order to continue the running of organizational
activities. For example, effective communication is important for managers in
organizations to carry out the basic functions of management, namely planning,
organizing, leadership and control.
Communication helps managers in carrying out their job duties and functions.
As a planning, all information related to important company/organizational plans
must be communicated to the manager and then forwarded to the structure below.
Organizing also requires effective communication with others about their work
tasks. Likewise the leader as a manager must communicate effectively with his
subordinates to achieve the team's goals. This is because control is not possible
without oral or written communication. Not limited to managers or leaders, good
communication is also needed by each staff to support each other in the process of
achieving organization goals. Sense of belonging. togetherness, and family will be
created by itself if communication is better. Putri and Suryanto (2018) stated that
the sense of belonging becomes something important for each member because
with a sense of ownership makes a person able to carry out his organizational
duties well. This is because if someone has a sense of ownership means there is a
feeling of value in the group so that it gives rise to the desire to construct.
Based on this, communication in the organization is no longer a tool, but has
become a basic need for every member of an organization. When communication is
limited to being a tool, then the scope of its role is also limited to tasks and
functions only. However, when communication has become a basic need, the role
and impact becomes wider. With good communication and proper system, it can be
ascertained that the environment formed in the organization will be a positive
environment. All problems that come from internal and external will be resolved
properly. The key to solving problems is communication.
