UNIT I : MEANING AND NATURE OF GEOGRAPHY


LESSON 1 : WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?

Objectives:

1. Give the definitions and importance of Geography in everyday living.


2. Explain the meaning of some concepts and basic understandings about
Geography.
3. Compare and contrast the two division of geography.
4. Explain the relationship of Geography to the other disciplines of the social

sciences and natural sciences.


5. Appreciate the concepts learned in geography that can be used by the
students in discussing related lessons in the classroom.
6. Prepare reports about the lesson utilizing different instructional techniques

WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY?
Comes from two Greek words:
Geo – means Earth
graphein- to write or describe

GEOGRAPHY means to write about the Earth.

Basic Understandings of Geography:

 Geography is the study of space on the Earth’s surface.


 Geography is the study of the areal differentiations on the Earth’s surface.
 Geography is the study of the relationships between man and his environment.
 Geography is the study of the physical features on the Earth’s surface
 Geography is divided into physical geography and human geography.
 Geography is related to the disciplines of the social sciences like economics, political
science, anthropology, history, sociology and psychology.
 Geography is related to the disciplines of the natural sciences like biology, astronomy,
meteorology, pedology and oceanography.

DISCIPLINES LINKED TO GEOGRAPHY

SOCIAL SCIENCES:
 Political Science – Political Geography
 Sociology – Social Geography
 Anthropology – Cultural Geography
 History – Historical Geography
 Economics – Economics Geography

NATURAL SCIENCES:

 Oceanography – Geography of the Ocean


 Pedology – Geography of Soils
 Geology – Geomorphology
 Climatology – Meteorology
 Biology - Biogeography

2 DIVISIONS OF GEOGRAPHY:

1. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY – refers to the distribution of landforms of the earth.

2. HUMAN GEOGRAPHY – refers to the distribution of cultural characteristics and


activities of the people.

 Both show the relationship between man and his environment.


 Both divisions of geography deal with space.
 Geography draws concepts from both the natural sciences and the social sciences.
 Related concepts from the different disciplines of the social sciences are organized and
unified.
 By drawing concepts from the different disciplines, lesson in geography is enriched.
