Context

● The 1920s Where are the repercussions of the first world war, one of the worst events the
world had ever seen. ( it was estimated that around 20 million men died)
● That was also a huge change in the social order with the end monarchies, new political
ideas and a more democratic society.
● Everyone wanted to forget the horrors of the war so they had lots of parties to entertain
themselves.
● Paris became known for its art and culture and Hollywood influenced fashion in lifestyle.
● The 1920s was a moment of great liberation for women, their expectations for the future
had drastically changed with the war.
● for example marriage wasn’t their first priority and instead experimented with jobs and
sometimes remained in those jobs and pursued a career.

How did fashion change?


● During previous decades many layers were used however women’s fashion changed great
deal in the 1920s getting rid of the restricted styles of the Victoria and Edwardian period’s.
Minimal layers became the fashion going towards loose clothing which revolved around
drop waist dresses that ended below the knees and revealed more of the arms and legs.

Flappers
● What are the most memorable fashion trends of the roaring 20s was undoubtably the
flapper look.
● One of the biggest differences being it flattened the bus line rather than enhancing it.
● Flappers were also young women who would wear short dresses(which was considered
scandalous and way too short)
● They were young women who were very liberated and constantly broke society rules, were
rebellious sometimes wanting to experiment or just shocked society.

Industry and society


● Factories grew and developed new machinery and materials.
● And the fashion industry soon followed, and began to mass produce clothes.
● Women loved how practical ready to wear was, as it wasted less of the time in fitting.
● Even Department stores started advertise ready to wear
● This became a huge success.
● Fashion started to be influenced by media for example movie stars like Louise Brooke who
was famous for the Hollywood movie “ FLAPPER”
● revolutionary fashion designers were also very successful when it came to influencing new
fashion trends.
● instead of the upper class who used to influence fashion.
