Context of the 50s
● The 50s were the first full decade after the end of World War II and is remembered as a
prosperous time recovery from Great Depression
● It was also a decade of a sigh of relief
● In the 50s it was a time of new hairstyle that broke the traditional, inventions, clothing.

● At the beginning of the 1950s, many
nations devastated by war were still
rebuilding.
● In many cases, returning soldiers had
married and started families.

● In and after the war, designers made their mark from places other
than Paris, France.
● In the 1950s, the greater geographic diversity of designers meant a
greater number of styles to choose from
● In addition, new synthetic fabrics offered new possibilities for
mass-produced garments
● Movie stars and fashion magazines promoted new looks and
showed how to wear the new clothing styles well.

● The style in 1950s in women, were dresses with rounded shoulders,
exaggerated hips and full skirts.
● Christian Dior was famous at that time.
● Pencil dresses was also famous. The pencil dresses could be used
with tailored, tucked in blouses.
● For accessories, using shoes was very popular like: stiletto, flats,
moccasins. Hats were very fashionable
● Men fashion it was very casual, they wore simple colors, baggy
suits with narrow ties.
● For shoes it didn't have a lot of variety like women.
Activities
● After WWII, people were ready to enjoy
themselves, with activities

● For activities there was the television, radio, drive-in theaters,
board games, road trips, comic books
● For families activities, leisure activities were great to bond in the
50s.
● Drive-in theaters it was huge, its was affordable and fun activity to
do
● For children they played like checkers, marbles, chess, comic
books were also popular and riding bikes

● Science and technology experienced
a major growth

● Optical fibre: the first optical fiber cables was created in 1952 by
Narinder Singh
● The first microchip was in 1958, the microchip packed a whooping 1
transistor for data processing

● It was a time of change and the music
of the decade reflected cultural
changes that were happening during
that time
● The effects of WWII embark on a
musical journey that would change.
● Rhythm & Blues and Rock n Roll
popularized black music and many
African American prominence and
enjoyed success.
● It was belief that white artist stole
music from African American
