Figures of speech
-A figure of speech is also a way of
describing something or someone
interestingly and vividly.
Hyperbole
1. I have a million things to do.
2. His brain’s the size of a pea.
3. I ate a mountain of food earlier.
Hyperbole
-is an exaggeration that is
created to emphasize a
point or bring out a sense of
humor.
What is Litotes?
Examples:

1. Coming home to a big mess and saying, “it’s great to be back”.

2. Telling a rude customer to “have a nice day”.

3. Walking into an empty theater and asking, “it’s too crowded”.

4. Stating during a thunderstorm, “beautiful weather we’re having”.

Directions: On 1 whole sheet of paper answer the following
statement. In CAPITAL letters write HY if the statement is
hyperbole and IR if the statement is irony. Copy and answer.
           1. She can hear a pin drop a mile away.
           2. I died of embarrassment.
           3. He’s as skinny as a toothpick.
           4. An English teacher has poor grammar.
            5. A man who needs medical assistance is run over by the ambulance
sent to help him.
          6. I walked a million miles to get here.
            7. An anti-technology group sets up a website to recruit new club
members.
           8. The president is injured when a Secret Service agent knocks him
down while         protecting him.
           9. A student passes a class with a well-written essay about how bad the
class is.
         10. She’s as old as the hills.
Assessment: Group Activity
Directions: In groups of five, use different literary devices
including Hyperbole and Litotes in the following tasks.

Group A- Comics Strip(Use 1 paper only)


Group B- Song Composition(2-3 stanzas)
Group C- Poem Writing (2-3 stanzas)
Group D- Script Writing (Dialogue)

At least 5 lines per character
