Digital filter Design (FIR)

Frequency Selective Response
Aim
Find appropriate coefficients of FIR , IIR filters
to approximate desired gain/phase characteristics
within specified frequency range.
Some General Observations
Requirement Preferred Filter
1. Linear Phase FIR
2. Lower Side-bands IIR
3.Less memory IIR
4. Fewer coefficients IIR Why
5. Lower complexity IIR
Low-pass specifications
FIR filters are also known as
FIR Vs. IIR
FIR Filter is useful for linear phase response!
Please pay attention that definition of A(ω) allows amplitude to
be negative, if the phase is unwrapped.
For any arbitrary M
Odd Length Case-III
• Re-do as previous case for antisymmetric case
for M=5.

For any arbitrary M

If we take Z-transform of both the sides:
Pole-zero response of linear-
phase FIR filters

• If z0 is a zero of real-valued linear-phase filter,

then so are z0*, 1/z0 and 1/z0*.
Few cases for linear phase FIR filters
*Generic zeros of a
linear-phase filter exist
in sets of 4.

*Zeros on the unit circle

exist in sets of 2.
 zeros on the real line exist
in sets of 2.
 zeros at 1 and -1 do not
imply the existence of
zeros at other specific
points.
