1 Week 3

Begin to understand the place of Health in the HPE learning area and the Australian Curriculum. A specific
focus will be place upon review of the cross curriculum priority areas and the general capabilities, and how
these fit within the Health learning area. One of the General Capabilities, Personal and Social Capability is
closely aligned with health and will thus be explored in greater detail.

1.1 Learning outcomes

As a result of the learning in this topic, you should be able to

 Identify how the Cross Curriculum priority areas can be applied and taught within Health Education.
 Identify how the General Capabilities align with topics of Health and how these can be taught within
Health Education.

1.2 What you need to do

Complete these activities before your workshop (these are activities embedded in this week’s lecture).

Within the lecture there is a question about the HPE curriculum:

Summarise in your own words the five propositions of the HPE Curriculum. Use this webpage to
assist.
What are the three dimensions of the Australian Curriculum?
What are the three cross-curriculum priority areas?
What are the General Capabilities and how should they be taught?
Which of the seven General Capabilities do you feel would be most closely aligned with and easily
integrated into our Teaching of Health Education?
Provide an example of how we could teach a General Capability within Health.
