social, political, cultural to religion. In this manner, postcolonialism, historically is the ‘post’ a
prefix for ‘after’ placed to demarcate the line where the colonial rule expires or is forced to
expire symbolically yielding place to the independence to the erstwhile colonized country. In a
narrow sense, postcolonialism becomes a tool of cultural politics and literature in the hands of
the authors and politicians who belong to the countries that were previously in the hold of
colonisers. However, postcolonialism is a contested term that is yet to be deciphered for further
extension in meaning, scope and approach. A clear definition is yet to come. The given
definitions highlight one or the other aspect of postcolonialism. But all the postcolonialist
theorists shake hands on the point that though colonialism is over, it has its aftereffects in
postcolonial countries notwithstanding their vigorous political sovereignty. In simple terms, we
can define postcolonialism as a set of theoretical approaches which focuses on the direct effects
and aftermaths of colonialism. Mishra and Hodges define post colonialism as ‘’an always present
tendency in any literature of subjugation marked by a systematic process of cultural domination
through the imposition of imperial structures of power’’ which, as they point out, implies that
postcolonialism is already implicit in the discourse of colonialism.

an analysis of civilization throughout the African continent.
