Similar to other Flexi Multiradio BTS modules, the AirScale System Module allows a
variety of module and plug-in unit-based installation options including:
• stacked upon each other without any cabinet or rack
• cabinet or rack installation
• mounted onto a wall
It is possible to stack two indoor subracks on a plinth or on top of existing Flexi casing. In
wall installation, two subracks can be installed on top of each other on the plinth.
g Note: Similar as with Flexi Multiradio Rel.3 system modules, a 40 mm (1.6 in.) intake
air clearance is required.

might condense into water. A heat exchanger or an air conditioner can be used instead of filter
air cooling.

The Nokia AirScale BTS is managed with the BTS Site Manager (LTE), that offers a
graphical user interface to the BTS. The BTS Site Manager can be connected locally to
the LMP port at the AirScale System Module (see Nokia AirScale System Module
Interfaces), or it can be connected remotely to the AirScale SM through NetAct. The
main functions of the BTS Site Manager are:
• Configuration Management
• Fault Management
• Performance Management
• Feature Management
• Hardware Management
• Software Management
• Commissioning
• Execution of Loop Tests and Transmitter and Receiver Test Models
As part of the installation, the AirScale SM and the whole BTS can be commissioned on-
site with the BTS Site Manager. The required parameters and HW configurations are
entered and optional tests (such as loop tests) can be executed to ensure correct
installation. Alternatively, commissioning can be performed remotely using the auto-
connection and auto-configuration functionality. The following commissioning modes are
supported:
• Manual Commissioning. All required commissioning data is entered manually.
• Template Commissioning. Some commissioning data is entered manually on top of
an existing pre-filled template.
• Re-commissioning. Some commissioning data is entered manually on top of the
existing commissioning data in the BTS.
• Plan-based Commissioning. Pregenerated (for example by the NetAct Planner)
commissioning plan is downloaded.
Further site integration and network optimization is done remotely through the BTS Site
Manager or NetAct. The target is to minimize the actions and parameters needed in the
on-site commissioning phase.
The AirScale SM can also be operated remotely using NetAct. The following
functionalities are supported:
• Configuration Management
• Fault Management
• Performance Management
• Hardware Management
• Software Management
Fan Replacement
The fans of the AirScale SM can be serviced on the field. It is possible to replace the
fans from the back of an installed and operating module if there is working space for that.
It is also possible to remove the module and easily replace the fan if there is no working
space in the back of the module. During the fan replacement when the system module is
operational, heat can temporarily rise and cause performance degradation for the system
module.
Unit Replacement
In case of failure, on-site service is done by the replacement of the plug-in unit. All
maintenance requires front and top access only (except the fan replacement). Front
cabling is used and the connectors and all fixings are easily accessible. In case of
AirScale system module swap, the configuration data must be downloaded again to the
module, either automatically using the auto-connection and auto-configuration
functionality, or manually.
ASIA unit have front-accessible service and reset button available. Pressing the reset
button for 5 seconds will result in clearing configuration data. Manual reset is required
afterwards for changes to take effect. See Release documentation in NOLS for more
details.

10 Transport Configurations
Description of Nokia AirScale Base Station transport configuration options.
The Nokia AirScale BTS provides several transport interfaces on the common units. See
Nokia AirScale System Module Interfaces for more details. The transport interfaces can
be used for:
• Backhaul connectivity (tail sites)
• Aggregation (chain or tree sites)
• Redundancy (ring, link load sharing)
• Centralized RAN site solutions
Nokia AirScale Base Station supports such high capacities that a backhaul link with 1
Gbps is not sufficient in many cases. The total DL transport capacity is relevant for the
connectivity, the sum of UL + DL is relevant for the IPsec performance.
Based on the available interfaces, the ASIA can support the following basic transport
configurations (more configurations will be available in future deliveries).
Configuration ASIA
g Note: Combining several units do not add amount of transport interfaces, check
possible limitations.
Nokia AirScale System Module support most of the installation options as the existing
Flexi mechanical platform products. There are some new items needed but mostly
existing one can be reused.
For more information on optional items, see: Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Flexi
Multiradio 10 Base Station Optional Items Description
To ensure proper operation, accurate synchronization within a single AirScale BTS and
between different AirScale BTSs is implemented. Control and Timing block in BTS is

Phase synchronization
Synchronization at the phase domain, is usually referred to the frame alignment of the
radio frame transmitted into air interface by different BTSs, that is aligned to each other
with the required accuracy (in the unit of microseconds or even nanoseconds). Time
Duplex technology, such as LTE TDD requires phase synchronization for its basic
operation to align downlink and uplink transmission. Phase synchronization implicitly
includes also frequency synchronization but not the other way around.
Phase synchronization can be provided through ToP with phase sync or GNSS receiver.
Time synchronization
It is synchronization in the absolute time domain, which means that different network
elements are aligned to the required Time of Day (ToD – in the unit of years, months,
days, hours and so on). The requirements span from very mild requirements to the most
stringent requirements depending on the applications. For example, time synchronization
is required for O&M purposes such as alarm correlation, logs but the accuracy
requirement is in the range of milliseconds while System Frame Number (SFN)
alignment on the radio interface requires a very strict accuracy requirement in the level of
sub microsecond. In this chapter, only SFN alignment will be indicated as this is a unique
requirement and special treatment is also required. SFN alignment requires phase
synchronization.
g Note: Conditions: BTS has been powered on and supply with accurate phase sync
sources for period of no less than 7 days.
Several system modules can be connected together by chaining using the available
OBSAI 3 Gbit/s or OBSAI 6 Gbit/s interfaces, SRIO 6.25 Gbit/s interfaces, System
Extension 10GE interfaces and SYNC_IN, SYNC_OUT interfaces. The following system
module chaining combinations are supported:
• AirScale SM internal connections
• AirScale SM ↔ AirScale SM interconnection
System Extension Interface (SEI) is mainly used for inter-AirScale SM connections. One
interface carries two 10GE links and 2 x SRIO links. There are two SEI interfaces per
ASIA (SEI1 and SEI2). SEI is also prepared to connect 10GE links to non-AirScale SM
counterpart or standard standalone 10GE switch.
