Simon Peter, son of Jonas, was a fisherman who lived
in Bethsaida and Capernaum. He was a member of the
Inner Circle and authored two New Testament epistles.
His Greek name was Simon and Hebrew name was
Cephas. He was married and his home was Capernaum.
He was a typical Galilean, quick-tempered, impulsive,
emotional, and loyal to the end.

Peter was the leader of the twelve Apostles and was a spokesman
for Jesus. He first confessed Jesus and declared Him as the Son of the
Living God, was at the Mount of Transfiguration, saw Jairus' daughter
raised to life, and denied Christ before a maiden. He was martyred on a
cross and his apostolic symbol is a cross upside down with crossed keys.

James, the Elder, Boanerges, brother of John the

Apostle, was a fisherman who preached in Jerusalem
and Judea and was beheaded by Herod. He was a man
of courage and forgiveness, without jealousy, and was
the first of the twelve to become a martyr.

John Boanerges was a fisherman and member of the

Inner Circle. He wrote the Gospel of John, I John, II
John, III John and Revelation, and preached among
the churches of Asia Minor. He was banished to the
Isle of Patmos and died a natural death. He was a
man of action, ambitious, and with an explosive
temper. His symbol is a chalice with a snake in it.
Andrew was the brother of Peter and a son of Jonas.
He is the first to have the title of Home and Foreign
Missionary and is claimed by three countries as their
Patron Saint. He introduced others to Jesus and died
a martyr in Achaia, Greece. He was crucified on an X-
shaped cross, which is still called Saint Andrew's cross
and is one of his apostolic symbols.

Bartholomew Nathanael, son of Talmai, lived in Cana

of Galilee and is believed to have been a missionary in
Armenia. He was a great searcher of the Scripture
and a scholar in the law and the prophets, and one
of the Church's most adventurous missionaries. He
preached with Philip in Phrygia and Hierapolis, and
died as a martyr for his Lord.

James, the Younger, wrote the Epistle of James, preached in

Palestine and Egypt, and was crucified in Egypt. His body was sawed
in pieces, becoming his apostolic symbol.

Judas Iscariot, the traitor, was the son of Simon who lived in
Kerioth of Judah and betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. He
was a violent Jewish Nationalist and covetous man who used his
position as treasurer of the band to pilfer from the common purse .
His apostolic symbol is a hangman's noose with pieces of silver falling
from it.
Matthew, or Levi, son of Alpheus, lived in
Capernaum and was a publican or tax collector.
He wrote the Gospel that bears his name and
died a martyr in Ethiopia. It is likely that James
the lesser was Matthew's brother, also the son of
Alpheus. Jews were the most vigorous haters of
tax gatherers, believing God was the only one to
pay tribute in taxes. Matthew was a despised tax collector who was
known to assess duty payable at impossible sums and offer to lend the
money to travelers at a high rate of interest. Jesus saw the potential
in Matthew and made him one of His men. He became the first man
to write down the teachings of Jesus and was a missionary of the
Gospel. His apostolic symbol is three money bags.

Philip was a disciple from Bethsaida who preached in

Phrygia and died a martyr at Hierapolis. Scholars
disagree on his identity, but he had a successful
campaign in Samaria and was one of the major
figures in the missionary enterprise of the early
church. He was a man with a warm heart and a
pessimistic head who wanted to do something for
others, but did not see how it could be done. He
died by hanging and requested that his body be wrapped in papyrus. He
stressed the cross as a sign of Christianity and victory.

Simon, the Zealot, was one of the little-known

followers of the Canaanite or Zelotes, who lived in
Galilee and were fanatical Jewish Nationalists. He
was devoted to the Law and hated Rome, but he
emerged as a man of faith. He died as a martyr
and his apostolic symbol is a fish lying on a Bible,
which indicates he was a former fisherman who
became a fisher of men through preaching.
Thomas Didymus was a pessimist and bewildered
man who became known as Doubting Thomas. He
was a man of courage and faith, and when Jesus
rose, he invited him to put his finger in the nail
prints in his hands and in his side. His faith became
great, intense and convincing, and he was killed with
a spear as a martyr for his Lord. His symbol is a
group of spears, stones and arrows.
