Activity 2: Importance of Ethics in my life and career

Instruction: Write briefly on how Ethics will help you in your life and career in the future.
Ethics refer to the theory of right action and common good and is mostly concerned
with how a human person is supposed to act in search of a good conduct and good life. As
a future physician who would live by the Hippocratic Oath, my pledges would include
prescribing only beneficial treatments according to my abilities and judgment; to refrain from
causing harm or hurt; and to live an exemplary personal and professional life. Given this
knowledge, ethics will help me because it will serve as my moral compass and guide in
making decisions both work-related and personal life choices. I will be guided in telling the
truth, keeping my promises, and to always make choice for the common good. For instance,
I will not accept any bribe from my patients/ clients in order to make false diagnosis,
prescribe harmful treatments, and alter medical records. More so, I will be grounded to
maintain a professional relationship with my patients/ clients by providing privacy,
confidentiality, and truthfulness. The decisions that I will make will guarantee that it will
promote health and well-being, respect my patient’s dignity and decisions, and to always
uphold justice and accountability in my medical profession. Lastly, ethics will ensure that I
will live a moral and good life and will always prioritize and promote the health and well-
being of my patients.

Activity 3: Find the relevance of Ethics in your community

React on the situation given below:

“An army officer shoots and killed an armed man who is about to detonate a bomb in a
populated street”

Moral and ethics are usually being confused as the same concept. However, there is
a thin line between the two. Moral would refer to practice while ethics would mean theory of
rightness or wrongness of a human action. Given the situation above, I can say that the
army officer did what he deemed ethically and morally correct based on his duties and
responsibility as a public servant who is to safeguard the safety and welfare of the people
around him. Others may see it as morally wrong because the officer killed the man when he
could knock him out or disarm him. However, as a daughter of a Police Captain and has
personally undergone military training, I totally understand the predicament of the army
officer. He was placed in a position where he needs to protect the lives and safety of the
people on the street and make a quick action in order to prevent the bomb from exploding.
The man is already armed thus, I assumed that the officer did that in order to prevent an
exchange of gun fires and further placing the people on the street in a dangerous situation.
