SUBJECT – APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS

SE (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)

UNIT 1 – Basics of I.C. Engines, Fuel – Air & Actual Cycle

UNIT 2 – S.I. Engines

UNIT 3 – Compression Ignition (C.I.) Engines

UNIT 4 – Testing of I.C. Engines

UNIT 5 – Engine Systems

UNIT 6 –Positive displacement Compressors

EXAM PATTERN FOR APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS

INSEM – 30 MARKS.

ENDSEM – 70 MARKS.

For Insem exam there are 2 units for 30 M & for Endsem exam last 4 units
consisting 70 Marks

Applied Thermodynamics is a numerical based critical subject so it is very

important to Analyze the syllabus properly.

After analyzing the syllabus we are able to know, What kind of question’s
university may asked on different units.

Applied Thermo dynamics is problematic subject so there may be the

chances of asking more than 3 problems i.e ( 1 compulsory problem in
each question ) .

So for that reason I give analysis of each unit with their weightage of
marks.

Once you prepare for last 2 units , You will definitely get more than 30
Marks in Applied Thermodynamics.

1 SI AND CI ENGINES 17M 34 M 4
2 IC ENGINE TESTING AND EMISSION 18 M 36 M 4
3 Engine System and Alternative Fuels 17 M 34 M 4
4 compressors 18 M 36 M 4
70 M 140 M 16
Unit – 3 17 Marks

Compression Ignition ( C.I. ) engine

Q.1) Write a short note on following………….

1) Dopes & Additives in CI engine

2) Injector & Distribution system

Q.2) What are the various types of combustion chamber used in CI engine Also
draw their sketches.

Q.3) Differentiate between knocking in SI & CI engine

Q.4) Explain fuel injection pump with neat sketch

Q.5) With a neat sketch explain the simple carburetor

Unit – 4 18 Marks

Testing of IC engine

Q.1) What are the different methods used to measure the brake power & Explain
any one method with neat sketch.

Q.2) Write a short note on following………….(Any One)

1) Heat Balance Sheet

2) S.F.C

Q.3) State the limitations of Turbo charging and supercharging

Q.4) Explain IC engine performance characteristics & explain how they are used
for engine performance evaluation?

(ONE COMPULSORY EXAMPLE FROM THIS UNIT)

Unit – 5 (17 Marks)

Engine systems and components

Q.1) Discuss electrical starting method used for IC engine OR With neat sketch
explain the starting system of IC engine

Q.2) Explain battery ignition system with neat sketch

Q.3) Write a short note on governing of IC engine

Q.4) Discuss various types of emissions from CI engine

Q.5) Enlist different types of lubrication system & explain with neat sketch wet
sump lubrication system
NOTE

1) This unit consist two main contents that is one as IC ENGINE SYSTEMS and
second is IC ENGINE EMISSIONS AND THERE CONTROL
2) There are total 4 questions on this unit for 17 / 34 marks which may be in
the form of ( 9+8 / 6+6+5 )
3) So there is 4 / 6questions on this unit, out of that 4 questions two questions
are based on part 1 that is section A & other two questions are based on
section B
4) It means there is two questions on IC ENGINE SYSTEMS & Two questions
on IC ENGINE EMISSIONS AND THERE CONTROL
5) No numerical on this unit , Prepare only for theory
6) Don’t prepare for all repeated questions given in book
7) Just go as per syllabus and don’t prepare for all questions because syllabus
is too much it will consume your lot of time.
Unit – 6 (18 Marks)

Q.2) With neat schematic sketch write a note on Effect of Clearance Volume In
Compressors.

Q.3) Explain Multistage compressors with its advantages and disadvantages

Q.4) Compare Reciprocating compressor with Rotary compressor ( Any 6 pt )

Q.5) Explain vane type compressor with neat sketch and P-V diagram

(One compulsory example from this unit for 7 Marks)

NOTE

1) This unit consist two main contents that is one as Reciprocating

Compressors and second is Rotary Compressors.
2) There is total 4 questions on this unit for 18 / 36 marks which may be in the
form of ( 6+6+6/ 9+9/10+8 )
3) So there is 4/6 questions on this unit, out of that 4 questions two questions
are based on part 1 that is section A & other two questions are based on
