For the first day of registration, online access begins at 12:00 pm for most programs. Have your User Name and Password handy to complete
your registration.
Fees
Fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. All fees within this guide are listed at a resident fee rate. Residents are people residing
within the corporate limits of The City of Red Deer or living within Red Deer County. Non-residents will pay an additional 25% on all program
fees. All fees include GST (where applicable).
Withdrawals
Withdrawals made more than five days prior to the program start date are subject to a 10% withdrawal fee. You may request a refund of the
balance or leave a credit on your account for future use. You may withdraw and re-register (transfer) into another program without penalty up
to five days prior to the program start date. All transfers are subject to space availability. Refunds will not be provided for withdrawals within
five days of the program start date. Withdrawal and transfer practices may vary by program.
Transfers
All transfers are subject to space availability. Transfers without penalty are permitted up to five days prior to program start date.
Medical Circumstances
Withdrawals for medical reasons are permitted with no penalty prior to program start. If you withdraw after program start due to medical
reasons, a pro-rated refund or credit on account will be permitted. Refunds or credits will only be available once a doctor's note has been
received. This note must be received within two weeks of notification of withdrawal in all cases.
Program Cancellations
Programs may be cancelled due to insufficient registrations. You will be notified as soon as a decision regarding class cancellation has been
made. In the event that The City cancels a program, you are entitled to a full refund or may transfer to another program, space permitting.
Acknowledgement of Risk
By registering, the participant and/or legal guardian of the participant accepts the risks of physical injury consistent with the program and
services in which they are registered and waives any claim for injury arising therefrom. Participants are expected to follow all safety
precautions and to use appropriate protective equipment as outlined by the program/service provider and/or instructor. If you have questions

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross - MC

Ages: 14+ years
Challenges students to perform increasingly complex water rescues, first aid & CPR scenarios. Prepares students for further lifeguard
training. Manual from Bronze Medallion is required for this course. Cost includes pocket mask. Prerequisite: 13+ yrs, Bronze Medallion.
100% attendance required.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion - MC

Ages: 13+ years
Bronze Medallion teaches lifesavers how to respond in complex water rescue situations, and develops physical fitness, decision-making,
and judgment skills. Bronze Medallion is a pre-requisite for all advanced lifesaving awards such as National Lifeguard certification.
Canadian Lifesaving manuals are included in cost. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13 yrs.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Star - CC

Ages: 10+ years
Bronze Star is excellent preparation for Bronze Medallion. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making
skills as individuals and in partners. They learn CPR and develop 'Water Smart' confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their
own personal lifeguard. Bronze Star is an official training program of the Lifesaving Society - Canada's lifeguarding experts.
Prerequisites: 10 yrs old & Red Cross Swim Kids 8 or higher.

Lifesaving Society Junior Lifeguard Club - CC

Ages: 8-15 years
The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) offers serious fun for kids 8 years and up who can swim at least 25m and tread water for 2 mintues. The
Junior Lifeguard Club provides an action-packed challenge for kids who love the water but who want more than 'lessons'. The program is
designed to let kids participate in activities similar to those of real lifeguards - in a safe, fun and controlled setting. But just as important,
kids experience teamwork and a sense of belonging. They become part of a club, the Junior Lifeguard Club.

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Recert - RC

The NL recertification exam is to assist lifeguards in maintaining their current National Lifeguard Pool certification. Recertification is
required every 2 years. Please bring a copy of your NL Pool Option card to the recert.

The Lifesaving Society's Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding. Candidates strengthen and expand their
liefsaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in auqatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the
importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a pre-requisite for
advanced training in the Society's National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs

Learn to swim with your very own instructor! Work towards your Red Cross Swim Kids badge or focus on specific swimming skills. When
registering a second swimmer (a sibling or friend) to the private lesson the fee for the second swimmer is half the price of the private.

Teen and adults develop increased comfort in the water through achieving basic floatation, movement and breathing skills in shallow
water. No previous swimming experience required. Course will include 30 min of instructed time and 15 min for time to practice skills on

This is an entry level for children ready to move in shallow water. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and
introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.

Ages: 6-14 years
This level helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a
Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking with assisted glides.

Swimmers learn how to perform a front and back glide with flutter kick, further develop their front swim, and complete deep-water
assisted activities and learn proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Upon completion, swimmers will be able to swim 10 metres
continuously.

This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well the foundation for making wise choices on where & when to swim. Diving is
introduced & children will work on floats and changing direction. Endurance is achieved by building strength in flutter kick & a 15-metre
swim.

Ages: 6-16 years
Swimmers increase distances on the front and back glide with flutter kick and will wear a PFD to practice floats in deep water. Upon
completion, swimmers will be able to perform glides with flutter kick unassisted, and swim 15 metres continuously.

The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and
developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25-metre swim.

Ages: 6-16 years
Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl (10 m), work on flutter kick on back, preform kneeling dive, introduction to
sculling and swim 25 metres continuously.

Level 5 is an introduction to back crawl, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives, receive an
introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim.

Swimmers further develop their front crawl (15m); learn back crawl (15m), whip kick on back, stride dive and treading water. Upon
completion, swimmers will be able to perform head-first sculling on back and swim 50 metres continuously.

Upon completion, swimmers will be able to perform head-first sculling on back and swim 50 metres continuously. Swim Kids 6 swimmers
increase the distance of their front/back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke (15m) and boating safety. This level refines front
crawl focusing on stroke technique and breathing. Upon completion, swimmers will be able to tread in deep water for 90 seconds,

Level 6 front crawl & back crawl continues to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced
to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water & the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75-meter
swim.

Ages: 6-16 years
Swimmers increase the distance of their front/back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke (15m) and boating safety. This level
refines front crawl focusing on stroke technique and breathing. Upon completion swimmers will be able to tread in deep water for 90
seconds, perform a front dive, and swim 75 metres continuously.
Red Cross Swim Kids 7/8 - CC

Ages: 6-14 years
Combined classes of Level 7 & 8. Level 7 continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke
and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for
increasing endurance. Endurance is built through timed treading water and a 150-metre swim. Level 8 provides an introduction to the
breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the
performance of rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300-metre swim.

Ages: 6-16 years
Swim Kids 7 increase the distance of their front/back crawl (50m each), elementary back stroke (25m), and learn whip kick on their front.
Swimmers endurance is increased to 150m swim. Swim Kids 8 increase the distance of their front/back crawl (75m each) and elementary
back stroke (25m). Swimmers will learn the breast stroke (15m), a feet first surface dive, and the eggbeater/tread water technique (3
min). Upon completion, swimmers will be able to perform a feet first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and swim 300 metres
continuously.

Ages: 6-14 years
Swim Kids 7 increase the distance of their front/back crawl (50m each), elementary back stroke (25m), and learn whip kick on their front.
Swimmers endurance is increased to 150m swim. Swim Kids 8 increase the distance of their front/back crawl (75m each) and elementary
back stroke (25m). Swimmers will learn the breast stroke (15m), a feet first surface dive, and the eggbeater/tread water technique (3
min). Upon completion, swimmers will be able to perform a feet first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and swim 300 metres

Red Cross Swim Kids 9/10 - CC

Ages: 6-14 years
Combined levels of 9 & 10. Level 9 is front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level
children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives and standing
dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400-metre swim. Level 10 is
further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn
about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet-first shallow dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and
butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

Swim Kids 9 perform the distance of front and back crawl (100m each), elementary back stroke (50m), breast stroke (25m) and learn the
sidestroke kick. Upon completion, swimmers will be able to execute a headfirst surface dive and swim 400 meters continuously. Swim Kids
10 work on refining the front/back crawl (100m each), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (50m) and sidestroke (25m) and
how to perform feet and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500
metre swim.

Ages: 6-14 years
Swim Kids 9 perform the distance of front and back crawl (100m each), elementary back stroke (50m), breast stroke (25m) and learn the
sidestroke kick. Upon completion, swimmers will be able to execute a headfirst surface dive and swim 400 meters continuously. Swim Kids
10 work on refining the front/back crawl (100m each), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (50m) and sidestroke (25m) and

Red Cross Swim Strokes - MC

Ages: 14+ years
Teens and adults practice the development of one or more swimming strokes, working towards stroke proficiency and increased
endurance. Prerequisites: must be able to swim front crawl at least 15 meters continuously and back swim at least 5 meters continuously.
Course will include 30 min of instructed time and 15 min for time to practice skills on own.
Water Safety Instructor - CC

Ages: 15+ years
The WSI Course is designed to provide candidates with the proper knowledge and skills to teach swimming and water safety while
promoting water safe attitudes in, on, and around the water. Learn to teach all levels of the Red Cross Learn to Swim program. Course
material will cover teaching methods for water safety, water skills, and swimming strokes. This certification consists of 4 components
which include a s kills evaluation, online learning, practicum teaching and classroom sessions. All of which must be completed for
successful completion of the WSI certification. Prerequisite: 15 years of age and Bronze Cross.
