Preface Expansions and conversions

1.3 Expansions and conversions

Main memory expansion
Two slots for riser cards with 8 FBD slots each are available. Each memory
bank can be populated with two 512 Mbyte, 1 Gbyte, 2 Gbyte or 4 Gbyte FBD
PC2-4200F or FDB PC2-5300F fully buffered DIMM memory modules.
The memory modules must be equipped in pairs. A memory bank must always
be equipped fully with the same type of memory modules.
There are three modes of operation for the main memory: non-mirrored mode,
mirrored mode (recommended) and sparing mode. Depending on the mode of
operation there are different population requirements.

Second processor
The system board can be upgraded with a second processor. Only processors
of the same type may be used on the system board. That means the number of
the internal processor cores as well as the primary clock and the FSB frequency
have to be the same. For dual operation, use a suitable multiprocessor
operating system.

Additional accessible drives

Three 5.25-inch bays are available for accessible drives. There can be installed
DVD/DVD-RX drives, tape drives, a multibay (slimline DVD and FDD,
ServerView Local Service Panel or Display) or a hard disks extension box.

Hard disks extension box

In the base units two 5.25-inch bays for accessible drives can be used to install
a hard disks extension box.
Two variants of the hard disks extension box are available:
– Variant 1:
one bay for a ServerView Local Service Panel (LSP) or ServerView Local
Service Display (LSD), one bay for a slimline DVD drive and two bays for 3.5-
inch hard disk drives
– Variant 2 (only possible if the system is equipped with 2.5-inch hard disk
drives):
eight bays for 2.5-inch hard disk drives

Expansions and conversions Preface

Additional expansion cards in PCI slots

The server has one standard PCI slot and six PCI express slots. Of these six
PCI express slots, four are x4 slots and two potential x8 slots. The capacity of
the two x8 slots depends on how all the PCI express slots are filled.

RAID key
The SATA SW RAID 5 functionality will be activated by installing a license key
(RAID key) on the SAS/SATA controller.

Battery Backup Unit

In case of an outage the battery backup (BBU) unit stores the memory contents.
Per expansion card one BBU can be installed. Per system maximum two BBUs
can be installed.

Parallel interface
As an option, a parallel interface can be provided.

Upgrading to redundant system fans

The standard fans can be upgraded to redundant system fans. If the redundant
system fans are installed, the fans are operating in a redundant configuration. A
defective system fan can be replaced during the next service.

Conversion standard power supply to hot-plug power supply

The standard power supply can be replaced by a hot-plug power supply. The
hot-plug power supply consists of two power supply modules. The conversion
kit contains only one power supply module, you have to order the second power
supply separately.
If one power supply module fails, the other power supply module guarantees the
unrestricted operation and the defective power supply module can be replaced
be replaced while the system is operating (hot-plug).

Conversion from a floorstand model to a rack model

The floorstand model can be optionally converted to allow the server to be
installed into any typical rack systems.

Working with CDs/DVDs and CD/DVD drives

When working with devices with CD/DVD drives, these instructions must be
followed.
V CAUTION!
● Only use CDs/DVDs that are in perfect condition in your server's
CD/DVD drive, in order to prevent data loss, equipment damage and
injury.
● Check each CD/DVD for damage, cracks, breakages etc. before
inserting it in the drive.
Note that any additional labels applied may change the mechanical
properties of a CD/DVD and cause imbalance.
Damaged and imbalanced CDs/DVDs can break at high drive speeds
(data loss).
Under certain circumstances, sharp CD/DVD fragments can pierce
the cover of the CD/DVD drive (equipment damage) and can fly out
of the device (danger of injury, particularly to uncovered body parts
such as the face or neck).
I You can prevent mechanical damage and damage to the CD/DVD drive,
as well as premature CD/DVD wear, by observing the following sugges-
tions:
– Only insert CDs/DVDs in the drive when needed and remove them
after use.
– Store the CDs/DVDs in suitable sleeves.
– Protect the CDs/DVDs from exposure to heat and direct sunlight.
Laser information
The CD/DVD drive complies with IEC 60825-1 laser class 1.
V CAUTION!
The CD/DVD drive contains a light-emitting diode (LED), which under
certain circumstances produces a laser beam stronger than laser
class 1. Looking directly at this beam is dangerous.
Never remove parts of the CD/DVD drive casing!

5 Main memory
V CAUTION!
Follow the safety instructions in the chapter “Safety instructions” on
page 15 et seq..
The system board supports up to 64 Gbyte main memory. Two slots for memory
riser cards with 8 FBD slots each are available. Each memory bank can be
populated with two 512 Mbyte, 1 Gbyte, 2 Gbyte or 4 Gbyte FBD PC2-4200F or
FDB PC2-5300F fully buffered DIMM memory modules.
ECC with memory scrubbing and the Single Device Data Correction (SDDC)
function is standard.

FBD PC2-4200F or FBD PC2-5300 Fully Buffered DIMM memory modules.
– Each pair consists of identical memory modules.
– The memory module capacity can differ for the various memory banks: e.g.
memory bank 2A/2B can be equipped with two 512 Mbyte memory modules,
and memory bank 1A/1B with two 1 Gbyte memory modules.
There are three modes of operation for the main memory:
– Non-mirrored mode
– Mirrored mode (recommended)
– Sparing mode
Depending on the mode of operation there are different population require-
ments.

Non-mirrored mode
Using one memory riser card the module population is as follows:
1A + 1B (minimum configuration) - 2A + 2B - 3A + 3B - 4A + 4B
Using two memory riser cards the population can be alternating (higher perfor-
mance) or consecutive.

9 Processors
V CAUTION!
Follow the safety instructions in the chapter “Safety instructions” on
page 15 et seq..
V CAUTION!
Processors are modules which can react extremely sensitively to electro-
static discharges and which must therefore always be handled with care.
After a processor has been removed from its protective sleeve or from its
socket, place it with its smooth side down on a non-conducting, antistatic
surface. Never push a processor over a surface.

9.1 Installing a second processor

The system board can be upgraded with a second processor. The upgrade kit
consists of a processor and a heat sink.
V CAUTION!
Only processors of the same type may be used on the system board.
That means the number of the internal processor cores as well as the
primary clock and the FSB frequency have to be the same. For dual
operation, use a suitable multiprocessor operating system.
Ê Open the server as described on page 21 for the floorstand model or on
