3 Ls OF EMPOWERMENT
 "The 3Ls of Empowerment" is a speech.
 The speaker says that women can be empowered.
 We must do three things to help women.
 These are Learning, Labour and Leadership.
 Women must be given education.
 Women must be given jobs
 Women must reach key positions in society.
 Thus, we can empower them.

ANY WOMAN
 Any Woman is a beautiful poem.
 It tells us about the importance of women in a family.
 They are like the pillars of a house.
 She takes care of the family.
 She holds them together.
 She is the wall against all dangers.
 She wishes to be alive till her children grow.

MATCHBOX
 Matchbox is a story of a married couple.
 Ajit and Nomita are husband and wife.
 She is from a poor family.
 She is beautiful.
 Ajit hides her letter regularly.
 One day Nomita finds this.
 She quarrels with him.
 Women are like matchboxes.
 They have great power.
 But they remain silent.

 Horegallu is a stone bench that can bear weight.
 Sudha Murty’s grandfather was a retired schoolteacher.
 He was like a horegallu to the travellers.
 Grandfather listened to the travellers.
 Ratna was also like the grandfather.
 She also listened to the problems of others.
 Both give relief to others
 Both are doing great social service.

UNIT 2
MENDING WALL
 Mending wall is a poem about walls.
 The wall separates the two neighbours.
 There is a wall between the poet and his neighbour.
 They meet every year to repair the wall.
 The poet does not love walls.
 But the neighbour says good fences make good neighbours

AMIGO BROTHERS
 Amigo brothers is the story of two friends – Antonio and Felix
 They lived like brothers.
 Both had the same dream.
 They wanted to become boxing champions.
 In the tournament they fight for victory.
 But in the end, they leave without waiting for the result.
 Friendship wins

THE HOUR OF TRUTH


 The Hour of Truth is a one act play about honesty.
 Robert Baldwin is an honest man.
 He worked in Gresham’s bank.
 Gresham was his close friend.
 Gresham misuses the fund and was arrested
 He asks Baldwin to lie at court.

 He even offers money.
 But Baldwin disagrees.
 All his family members ask Baldwin to tell a lie.
 But Baldwin is not ready.
 Finally Gresham was punished.
 Baldwin gets a job as a reward for his honesty.

THREE WHEELED REVOLUTION
 It is an interview with Irfan Alam.
 He is the founder of SammaaN.
 SammaaN helped rickshaw pullers.
 SammaaN helped them to buy their own rickshaws.
 SammaaN taught their children.
 SammaaN gave new life to the community.
 The community felt safe and happy

DIDI
 Didi (Shaheen Mistri) was a rich girl.
 Her parents were abroad.
 She began to study in India.
 Then she visited slums in Mumbai.
 She wanted to do something to help the poor people there.
 She decided to give basic education to their children.
 She started Akanksha Foundation for this.
 Now Akanksha has many centres in India.

STAMMER
 Stammer is a poem written by K. Satchidanandan.
 The poet says that stammer is not a handicap.
 It is a way of speech.
 It is a gap between word and its meaning.
 It is the silence between words and action.
 It is common to all.
 The poet says that God also stammered when he created man.

WHEN A SAPLING IS PLANTED
 ‘When a Sapling is Planted" is a speech.
 She spoke when she got Nobel Prize.
 She was the first African woman to get Nobel Prize.
 She started the Green Belt Movement.
 It was against deforestation and Commercial farming.
 They planted millions of plants.
 Kenya became green again

RICE
 Rice is a poem by Chemmanam Chacko.
 The poet is returning from North India.
 He wanted to eat a meal of rice.
 He is travelling in a train.
 He thinks that it will be planting season.
 But when he reached home, he was shocked.
 The paddy field has changed to rubber plantations.
 The poem is a satire on the change of attitude.

DANGERS OF DRUG ABUSE


 Dangers of drug abuse is an essay
 It tells about the effect of sensual drugs on brain.
 Drugs can be divided into medicines and sensual drugs.
 Sensual drugs affect the brain cells.
 The brain controls our body.
 So, all our systems are affected.
 This will lead to many problems.

POST EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS
 It is a one act play.
 There are several characters.

 A lady Postal assistant is the main character.
 A Christmas gift is mistaken for a time bomb.
 The people there put it in water.
 It was a beautiful Swiss clock.
 It was destroyed completely.
 The lady Postal assistant leaves her job for ever.

THIS IS GOING TO HURT JUST A LITTLE BIT


 It is a comic poem with a good message.
 The poet tells us the experience in a dental clinic.
 We will sit with our mouth wide open.
 We will not be able to move.
 The dentist will work like a man repairing a road.
 All want to keep teeth clean to avoid dentist.
 For that we have to visit the dentist regularly.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT


 It is a short story written by R.K. Narayan.
 A teacher and a boy are the main characters.
 The parents appointed a private teacher for their child.
 They asked him not to punish the boy.
 The boy was not ready to learn.
 The teacher punishes him at last.
 The boy blackmails the teacher.
 The teacher wanted to keep his job.

ROBERT BALDWIN
● Robert Baldwin is the main character in the play “The Hour of
Truth” written by Percival Wilde.
● He is an honest man.
● He worked in Gresham’s bank.
● But he lived happily with that low income.
● One day Gresham was arrested for misuse of deposit.

● She was beautiful woman from a poor family.
● She was married to Ajit, a member of a large rich family.
● Her mother was a poor old widow.
● But she could not help her mother as she was jobless.
● Ajit had low opinion about her and her mother.
● But she remained silent.
● But one day she reacted violently.

FELIX VARGAS
 Felix Vargas is one of the main characters in the story “Amigo
Brothers”
 He was seventeen years old.
 He was the close friend of Antonio Cruz.
 Felix was dark, short, and husky.
 He had black hair in natural afro style.
 His ambition was to become a boxing champion of the world.
 He gave more importance to friendship.

ANTONIO CRUZ
● Antonio Cruz is one of the main characters in the story “Amigo
Brothers”
● He was Seventeen years old.
● He was the close friend of Felix Vergas.
● He was fair, lean and lanky.
● His hair was always falling over his eyes.
