Cell Membrane:

- Consists of a phospholipid bilayer

- Hydrophilic heads (polar)
- Hydrophobic tails (nonpolar)
- Contains receptor molecules
- Fluid-mosaic model

Function:
- Boundary between a cell and the outside environment
- Selectively Permeable:
- Controls the passage of materials into and out of a cell

-
Through proteins

Cell Transport:

Diffusion: movement of molecules in fluid or gas from H→L without energy

- Facilitated diffusion: uses transport proteins.
Osmosis: movement of water molecules from H → L water potential without energy
- Active Transport: Movement of materials with the use of energy
- Against the concentration gradient (L → H)
Protein Pumps: require energy to move things into/out of the cell
Endocytosis: taking in liquids or large molecules by engulfing them in a membrane
- Phagocytosis: solids
- Pinocytosis: liquids
Exocytosis: release of liquids or large molecules out of the cell membrane
