LET’S GET STARTED!
Where should a research begin?
How is a topic chosen?

RESEARCHER’S INTEREST
Sources of Interest
Daily Life Experiences Academic Readings
Ex. Fishermen could have Can stimulate one’s
developed the most effective interest to explore a
way to grow fish because particular topic
they are exposed to these
things
Sources of Interest
Attention-Catching Situations
Researchers can Personal Hobbies
formulate questions as to Ex. Survey the views

how this thing became of people about a

is able to do those, etc. they enjoy doing so

Other Sources of

How to Choose the
Correct Qualitative
Research Paper Topic?
1. Can I research this topic in the time I have
been given by my
school/college/university?
2. Is there a research gap that my research
will be able to fill?
3. Is this topic highly necessary; if I don’t
research this topic, will the research
community be affected?
4. Has this topic been researched before?
5. Does this topic support doable, practical
research objectives and questions?
6. Does my topic lean more towards the
quantitative side than the qualitative side?
Example Research Topic

NARROWING DOWN A RESEARCH TOPIC
REMINDERS:
➢ What is current and what is new;
➢ Recommendations of researchers who have
conducted similar studies;
➢ What has already been studied; and
➢ New ways of gathering data

Questions
How to Narrow down a Broad Research Topic

Identify and describe the problem

this includes specifying the issue to study

by dividing the broad topic into different
aspects and selecting a specific area that
you wish to pursue.
Research Topic - Domestic Violence
➢ Profiles of the Victims of Domestic Violence
➢ Causes of Domestic Violence
➢ Impact of Domestic Violence to Family
➢ Services Available to Victims of Domestic
Violence, etc
Research problem –
The causes of domestic violence in
families with low socioeconomic status
RESEARCH PROBLEM

It is what the researchers

aim to answer later on as
they go through the
research endeavour.
PURPOSE STATEMENT

Is the major intent or

objective in the study

Ex. To explore the causes of

domestic violence in families with
low socioeconomic status
Research Questions
Are sub-problems that you plan to
answer to achieve your main objective
▪ What are the types of domestic violence experienced
by families with low socioeconomic status?
▪ What is the behavior of the offender in their family?
▪ What triggers the act of abuse to the spouse or their
children?
▪ How does the behavior of the offender contribute to the
occurrence of domestic violence in their family?
Types of questions good for the
qualitative type of research
Exploratory Questions – these are
questions that are intended to
understand or increase knowledge about
the topic such as how a particular social
situation occurred or changed.
Types of questions good for the
qualitative type of research
Interpretative Questions – the purpose of
these types of questions is to understand
an individual or group of people’s
perceptions, experiences, or behavior in
connection with a particular situation,
event, or phenomena.
GIVE IT A TRY!
1. Think of a researchable broad
topic that interests you (e.g.,
animals, ICT, games, Topic
medicine, etc.)
2. From this broad topic, think of
a possible smaller topic Research
connected to this broad topic. Problem
3. Make this topic more specific. Purpose
4. Ask questions regarding the Statement
specific you have chosen.
5. Use the inverted pyramid to Research
Questions
concretize your idea.
RESEARCH TITLE
The title is the introduction or “face” of the
paper that is read. It should give the
summary of the main ideas of your study to
catch the interest and curiosity of the
reader so that the reader can study the full
paper.
RESEARCH TITLE
• Give weight and reputation to the research
paper.
• In QUALITATIVE research, a researcher
starts with a tentative title. As the study
progresses, the context of the study and the
manner of the research respondents are
revealed. The highlights of the research are
then included in the final title.

Background of the Study

Justifying the research problem means giving

your reasons why your study is important.
This justification is included in the introduction
in which you give the background of your
study and provide evidence to discuss why
your study matters.
Background of the Study
The background of the study is the section in
a research report where you present the reasons
for conducting the study as well as the need to find
a solution for the identified problem. This is also the
part where you summarize the goals of your study
by providing information that explains the history
and nature of the problem about existing literature.

Statement of the Problem
Statement of the Problem
Remember:
As easy as it may seem, developing
research questions will never be easy if
you don’t have a rich background of
knowledge about your topic. Therefore,
you must do extensive reading of
literature related to your area of concern.
Scope and Delimitation of Research
Scope – this contains the factors or variables that are
included in your study. It gives the readers an idea of
the content and coverage of your research such as
the following:
✓ What is your study?
✓ When will you conduct the study?
✓ Where is the area of investigation?
✓ Who are the participants?
Scope and Delimitation of Research

Delimitation – this presents the definite

boundaries and parameters of your investigation.
It describes the variables included and excluded
as well as the procedural limits such as data
gathering tools, geographical setting, and the
period covered.
Significance of the Study
A research study will only be significant
if its importance will be recognized. This
section of the research study explains
the relevance of addressing a particular
issue to improve the quality of life of a
person or the community as a whole.
Significance of the Study
This should include the precise description of
the following:
1. Who are the beneficiaries of the study?
2. How the research findings would benefit the
beneficiaries
3. The relevance of results to identified problem
or needs
4. The potential contribution to new knowledge
and policies
