3. REMINDERS
Procedure:
To run diagnostics on the vehicle's computers, switch on the ignition in fault finding mode (+ after ignition forced
setting).
Proceed as follows:
– Renault card on the card holder (keyless vehicle scenario 1, basic, not hands-free and scenario 2, top of the
range, hands-free),
– Press and hold start button (longer than 5 seconds) with start-up conditions not fulfilled,
Note:
The left-hand and right-hand Xenon bulb computers are powered when the dipped headlights are lit. Fault
finding procedures can only be carried out on them after the ignition has been switched on in fault finding mode
(+ after ignition forced setting) and the dipped headlights are on.
– Ensure that the + after ignition feed has been cut off by checking that the computer warning lights on the
instrument panel have gone out.
Faults:
On the tyre pressure monitoring system, only faults declared present exist.
The present state of faults must be considered when using the diagnostic tool after switching on + after ignition
(without activating any system components).
Deal with present faults according to the procedure specified in the Interpretation of faults section.
Conformity check
The conformity check is designed to check the states and parameters which do not display any faults on the
diagnostic tool when inconsistent. This phase therefore allows:
– diagnosis of faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.
– checks that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault reappearing after repairs.
This section gives the fault finding procedures for states and parameters and the conditions for checking them.
If a state is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside permitted tolerance values, you should consult the
corresponding fault finding page.
If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK, but the customer complaint persists, the fault should be treated by
customer complaints.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE
Procedure to be carried out before entering fault finding mode with the tool
– Are the faulty wheels equipped with valves fitted with pressure sensors, or were they so at the time of the
incident?
– Verify the position of the wheels on the vehicle (valve colour code). Put the wheels back in position and
program the codes of the four valves if the wheels are not in their original position.
– Do the tyre dimensions correspond to the original dimensions of the tyres fitted on the vehicle?
– Check the tyre pressure with a pressure gauge. Do they correspond to the pressures noted on the door or in
the driver’s handbook for that size of tyres?

Fault finding - System operation 35B
SYSTEM OPERATION
– The sensors are activated about one minute after the vehicle has been running at a speed exceeding 20 kph.
– When driving, the sensors emit signals every minute.
– The sensors remain activated for 15 minutes after the vehicle stops, then go into standby mode.
– In standby mode, the sensors emit signals only if they detect a pressure difference between two successive
measurements exceeding 68 mbar or if the pressure difference since last emitting exceeds 68 mbar (due to tyre
cooling).
– The tyres are considered to be cold when the vehicle speed has been zero for 1h 45 min.
– The minimum time for detection of a leak is approximately 15 minutes.
– The message "Pressure unsuitable for the speed" is activated only if the vehicle travels at more than 170 kph
(as an indication) for 3 minutes and the pressure on at least one of the tyres is 400 mbar less than the
recommended pressure at low speed. This message is inactive if the tyres are inflated to motorway pressure,
irrespective of the vehicle speed.
– Alert thresholds:
– over-inflation when cold = recommended pressure + 700 mbar
– over-inflation when warm = recommended pressure + 850 mbar
– under-inflation = recommended pressure - 400 mbar
– major under-inflation = recommended pressure - 600 mbar
– imbalance = pressure difference between the LH and RH wheels on the same axle exceeding 500 mbar
– Informative messages displayed for the driver:
– "Puncture: Change tyre" + STOP warning light + the wheel concerned fills up on the instrument panel
display.
– "Readjust tyre pressure" + the wheel concerned fills up on the instrument panel display.
– "Inflate tyres to motorway pressure" + the wheel concerned fills up on the instrument panel display.
– "Tyre sensor inoperative" + the wheel concerned is erased.
– "ELECTRONIC FAULT" + "Service" warning light + the wheels concerned disappear from the instrument
panel display.
To know whether the message displayed on the instrument panel is indeed due to a request by the SSPP system,
refer to Workshop Repair Manual 366 Section 83A, Instrument panel.
– No display of the tyre inflation pressure on the instrument panel on MEGANE II.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
This procedure is to be carried out when replacing a tyre pressure monitoring system component (valve or
UCH).
– To guarantee proper valve programming, follow these steps:
– It is essential to program the four valves;
– Over-inflate the tyres to 3.8 bar, except on the wheel(s) fitted with new valves;
– Use the diagnostic tool and valve exciter to read and write the valve codes.

CONSISTENCY OF INSTRUMENT PANEL AND UCH CONFIGURATIONS
Consistency between the instrument panel and tyre pressure monitoring system is managed automatically by the
instrument panel.
SUMMER/WINTER TYRES
On leaving the factory, it is the summer wheel set that is configured in the UCH, but customers can fit their vehicle
with a winter set (winter wheels = wheel rims + sensors + special tyres).
The first time a set of winter wheels is fitted, program the codes of the four wheel sensors. Subsequently, whenever
there is a changeover from one set of wheels to another, recognition takes place automatically without intervention
at the UCH level.
Establishing communication between the UCH and the CLIP diagnostic tool:
– Connect the wire to the diagnostic socket and switch on the ignition.
– Switch on the diagnostic tool.
– Select the vehicle type and carry out the multiplex network test.
– Select the "Tyre" function.
– Follow the fault finding procedure described previously.
WARNING
REPLACING A UCH
In the event that a UCH is replaced, configure the UCH "with SSPP" and program the four wheel sensors in
the new UCH by procedure SC002, "Programming the codes of the four valves".
See Section 87B, "UCH", for configuration of the other equipment managed by the UCH.

MATCHING THE VALVE TO THE TYRE
Each sensor is matched to the correct wheel during production and the UCH is programmed with the
identification codes. This is so that a faulty wheel can be identified (given that the receiver cannot determine
the position of the wheel transmitting the signal).
Accordingly, swapping wheels over is prohibited except with a reprogramming operation. A sensor marking
system ensures that tyres can easily be refitted in their original location.
Coloured rings are attached to the wheel sensors, corresponding to the four colours identified on the pressure
label and in the driver's handbook.
Whenever wheels are swapped over, reprogram the new sensor position in the UCH by means of the
diagnostic tool.
The coloured rings will then have to be placed back in the location marked on the label on the driver's side door.

SC002:
FOUR VALVE CODE PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
WARNING: No operation involving replacing a valve should be attempted without full knowledge of the
recommendations outlined in section 35 of Workshop Repair Manual 364..
Automatic programming with the Clip tool and the valve exciter:
⇒ If the vehicle has run for more than 3 minutes at a speed > 20 kph with the valves which have to be
programmed (wheels fitted on the vehicle: summer or winter), the four tyres must be inflated to a pressure of
at least 3.8 bar to cause the valves to enter programming mode. Check on the screen that the tyres fitted on
the vehicle are at a pressure of at least 3.5 bar.
⇒ Then from the general menu, use the Clip tool to select the "repair mode" menu, then "programming", then
select command SC002 Programming the four valve codes.
⇒ Execute the command, click on the "Next" button, choose the set of valves which have to be programmed
(wheels fitted on the vehicle: summer or winter), then confirm with the "Next" button. Then excite the tyres; the
exciter should rest against the tyre just below the valve in question. Pressing the exciter button causes the
green indicator light to come on; keep the exciter resting against the tyre for a few seconds, the time taken for
the indicator light on the screen of the Clip tool to switch to green. Repeat the operation on the vehicle's four
tyres, following the order given by the Clip tool (Front Left) Front Right Rear Right Rear Left).
If running the exciter test does not make the code reappear, replace the valve.

Special note:
If a wheel is equipped with a tyre pressure sensor, precautions must be taken
NOTES when removing/refitting tyres. Failure to take the precautions specified in
Section 35 of the Workshop Repair Manual could result in the sensor being
damaged, and potential operating faults in the tyre pressure monitoring system.
STEP 1
Start by checking the tyre inflation and if necessary restore to the recommended pressure.
Then, to check that the valves are operating correctly, verify, at each conformity check, that all the valves are
transmitting. To do this, create a leak on the tyres and check that they change state:
STEP 2
– If the original state is: over-inflated
Carry out step 1. Check the pressure with a pressure gauge and reduce the pressure until the final state
changes to "OK".
– If the original state is: punctured or under-inflated
Carry out step 1. Check the pressure with a pressure gauge and carry out any work needed to stop the leak
and re-inflate the tyre to the recommended pressure.
– If the original state is: absent
Carry out step 1. If the state does not change, replace the valve on the tyre concerned following the
instructions and the code programming procedure for the four valves SC002 described in the Configuration
and programming part of this subsection.

The tyre pressure monitor causes the service warning light to come on in the following circumstances:
– Inconsistency in the UCH and instrument panel computer configurations.
– Pressure to readjust.
– Puncture if PAX System tyres.
– Electronic fault.
– Tyre sensor inoperative.
Check that the UCH and instrument panel computers are configured with the Tyre Pressure Monitor function.
To do this, read the computer configuration with command LC017: Tyre Pressure Monitor function in the

When communication is established, the default value of the settings is displayed (3.5 bar). By creating
a leak or using a road test, force each valve to transmit to discover the actual pressure levels measured
by the sensors during the fault finding procedure.
In all cases, check that the pressures displayed on the diagnostic tool actually match the pressure-gauge
readings (to within 0.2 bar).
If the readings do not correspond, you may encounter two possible scenarios:
1st case: the settings still display 3.5 bar
This means that the wheel valve codes do not correspond to the wheel set programmed into the UCH. (When
the UCH receives the valve codes, it will not recognise them because they do not correspond to the wheel set
codes already programmed, which are the only ones it will recognise). To rectify this:
Select the Clip tool and command CF007: Select valve set present on the vehicle (if necessary, follow the
procedure outlined in the Configuration and programming section). Go back to the parameter menu, excite
each valve and check that the correct readings are being displayed.
2nd case: Parameters PR003 to PR006 display values that are incorrect (and different from 3.5 bar)
Where the difference is significant, it indicates a faulty sensor. Replace the faulty sensor(s). Follow the
programming procedure: SC002 Programming the codes of the four valves, described in the
Configuration and programming section of this subsection.
After programming, repeat the fault finding procedure from the beginning.

side door, in the driver’s handbook or in Workshop Repair Manual 364 Section 35 A for the type of wheels
fitted on the vehicle.
If the tyres are warm, add 300 mbar to the recommended pressure.
If the pressure is readjusted, perform a road test for at least one minute at a speed greater than 20 kph to force
the wheel sensors to transmit.
Read the pressure values in parameters PR003 to PR006. If the difference between the pressure gauge
measurement and the reading on the diagnostic tool shows scatter (uniform difference on the four wheels >
300 mbar), readjust the pressures taking into account the pressure gauge scatter.

3. REMINDERS
Procedure:
To run diagnostics on the vehicle's computers, switch on the ignition in fault finding mode (+ after ignition forced
setting).
Proceed as follows:
– Renault card on the card holder (keyless vehicle scenario 1, basic, not hands-free and scenario 2, top of the
range, hands-free),
– Press and hold start button (longer than 5 seconds) with start-up conditions not fulfilled,
– Connect the diagnostic tool and perform the required operations.
Note:
The left-hand and right-hand Xenon bulb computers are powered when the dipped headlights are lit. Fault finding
procedures can only be carried out on them after the ignition has been switched on in fault finding mode (+ after
ignition forced setting) and the dipped headlights are on.
– Ensure that the + after ignition feed has been cut off by checking that the computer warning lights on the
instrument panel have gone out.
Faults:
Faults are declared either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and have
disappeared since, or whether they remain present but are not diagnosed within the current context).
The present or stored state of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is used after the
+ after ignition feed (without acting on the system components).
For a present fault, apply the method described in the Interpretation of faults section.
For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the Notes section.
If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the
fault
Conformity check
The conformity check is designed to check the states and parameters which do not display any faults on the
diagnostic tool when inconsistent. This phase therefore allows:
– Diagnoses of faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.
DAE X84 V04 V1.1

ELECTRIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING
Vdiag no.: 04
On this vehicle, the steering system is power-assisted by an electric motor attached to the steering column,
according to the driver's intention. This driver intention is translated by a torque sensor, which measures the force
applied to the steering wheel by the driver, and a steering column angle sensor. Assistance is provided by an electric
motor which applies a more or less strong torque to the steering column, in one direction or the other.
A computer controls this assistance according to several parameters of the vehicle's environment, including the
vehicle speed.
Note:
When the computer detects a fault, the assistance can be modified depending on how serious the fault is.
An incorrect or absent vehicle speed signal results in assistance equal to that provided at 40 km/h.
Note:
Depending on the operating conditions and the operations performed on the vehicle before switching on the
ignition, the assistance system may take a certain time to be activated after engine starting, e.g. after battery cutoff
or switching the ignition off.
Slow flashing of the warning light at 2 Hz: the electric power assisted steering system is in diagnostic mode.
Rapid flashing of the warning light at 8 Hz along with message "check steering": steering wheel not calibrated and
not indexed.
"SERVICE" warning light lit with "check steering" displayed on the instrument panel: incorrect signal received by the
computer.
– assistance equal to that provided at a speed of 40 km/h if vehicle speed signal is absent or incorrect,
– the angle sensor signal is incorrect: the steering wheel angle sensor is not calibrated (no active reminder).
"STOP" warning light lit with "check steering" displayed on the instrument panel: run diagnostics on the faulty
system. Contact your Techline.
The sensor must be initialised before programming. The indexing is in effect as soon as the steering wheel is turned
by more than a quarter of a turn to the left followed by a quarter of a turn to the right.
The steering wheel angle sensor is initialised after switching the ignition on. For the sensor to be initialised, the
steering wheel must be turned to the left or the right. If this is not done, the steering wheel angle value reading will
be 1.2 degree higher or lower than the actual value.
If the sensor is initialised, the reading will be precise to within 0.1 degree.

Fault finding - Replacing components
Before replacing the electric power assisted steering computer, the battery must be disconnected.
After each battery disconnection, the steering wheel angle is incorrect (remains at 0) and the ET020 state is at
"State 3". Following a road test, this will result in a fault in the Electronic Stability Program.
Therefore, after each battery disconnection, turn the steering wheel a quarter of a turn to the left then a quarter of a
turn to the right and bring the steering wheel to the centre point with wheels straight ahead and engine running.
If the problem persists, stop and restart the engine without pressing the ESP button and repeat previous
procedure.
Whenever replacing the electric power assisted steering computer, the computer must be configured according to
the configuration of the vehicle concerned (see CF088 or SC001) and carry out the steering wheel angle
programming (CF085).

IMPORTANT:
The computer has four different adjustments. Consequently, select the assistance law.
The computer is delivered with the default calibration law 0.
An inappropriate calibration level can lead to poorer performance.
Calibration procedure:
– connect the diagnostic tool;
– consult the Electric Power Assisted Steering diagnostic;
– select configuration CF088 "Computer calibration";
– configure the computer according to the assistance level defined for the concerned vehicle (see notes
relating to the CLIP command),
– close the fault finding mode without turning off the tool (close the application only),
– switch off the ignition,
– wait 15 seconds for the end of the "power latch" then restart,
– reread the configuration to confirm (LC005).
Configuration 0: A non calibrated or new computer will always be calibrated to the configuration 0. It's the
default calibration law.
Configuration 1: K9K engine with manual gearbox or K4J and K4M with manual or automatic gearbox, fitted
with 16-inch wheels or less.
Configuration 2: K9K engine with automatic gearbox or F4R and F9Q with manual or automatic gearbox,

NOTES To apply, for example, when the electric power assisted steering computer is replaced.
IMPORTANT
Configuration of the steering wheel angle means programming angle 0. This must be performed for all
computers empty of data and whenever it is required in this sub-section.
Lack of programming or incorrect programming of this angle results in lighting of the service warning light (see
"warning light operation strategy") and an Electronic Stability Program fault.
Programming procedure:
– start the engine
– turn the steering wheel completely to the left and to the right
– set the wheels straight ahead, with the steering wheel at centre point
– select the CF085 command
– while the "command is being processed", turn the steering wheel a quarter of a turn to the left, the state
then changes to "command finished"
– Switch off the engine and wait 15 seconds before reswitching the ignition on to validate programming
– turn the steering wheel completely to the left and to the right
– check the steering wheel angle sensor state value
– check the faults:
– If there are faults, carry out the corresponding procedure and restart the configuration
– If there are no faults, the programming is finished

be carried out. In this case, the service warning light will flash at 8 Hz.
STATE 2: Not calibrated and indexed: the angle is not calibrated but the index has been identified. The

STATE 3: Calibrated and not initialised: the angle is calibrated but the steering wheel has not been turned since
switching the ignition on. The angle is precise to within ± 1.2° OR the battery was disconnected (with incorrect
angle).
STATE 4 "calibrated and initialised" the angle is calibrated and the steering wheel has been turned since
switching the ignition on. The angle is precise to within ± 0.1°.
After a battery disconnection, the ET020 state means "calibrated and not initialised " and the PR121 "Steering
wheel angle" remains at 0.
Consult Help for the battery disconnection procedure.
If the angle is frozen at "0" despite turning the wheel, the cause may be:
– battery disconnection: follow the "battery disconnection" procedure
– not calibrated: recalibrate with configuration CF085 "steering wheel angle programming".
– "STOP" warning light lit without assistance and ET020 stuck in "STATE 3": correct the assistance problem
before dealing with the angle sensor. If the calibration is not done, the service warning light will come
on but not the stop warning light.
If the assistance returns ("STOP" warning light off), and the angle problem persists, recalibrate the angle.

ASSISTANCE LEVEL
PR140
NOTES None.
The assistance level is the percentage of assistance authorised by the Electric Power Assisted Steering computer,
according to the temperature of the assistance motor, the computer and the type of fault detected.
To deactivate an assistance limitation due to an excessively high temperature, one need merely avoid actuating
the steering system for at least 1 hour.
NOTE:
In normal operation, with engine running, the value displayed on the diagnostic tool should be 100% and falls to
as far as 15 % if one stays in the limit position for more than 5 seconds. It is 0% with the engine stopped or stalled.
If the assistance is not at 100%, whereas the temperature is correct, refer to the fault diagnostic and the ALP charts
(fault finding charts).

3. REMINDERS
Deal with present faults according to the procedure specified in the section on Interpretation of faults
– diagnosis of faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.
– checks that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault reappearing after repairs.
This section gives the fault finding procedures for states and parameters and the conditions for checking them.
If a state is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside permitted tolerance values, you should consult the
corresponding fault finding page. DAE X84 V12 V1.2

ELECTRIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING
Vdiag no.: 12
On this vehicle, the steering system is power-assisted by an electric motor attached to the steering column,
according to the driver's intention.
PULL COMPENSATION
In addition, the vehicle drift to the right or left is corrected by the electric power assisted steering motor.
This motor can apply a constant or variable correction (automatic) on the steering to prevent the vehicle from drifting
to the left or right when driving in a straight line.
"SERVICE" warning light lit with "check steering" displayed on the instrument panel: signal received by the computer
is incorrect.
– assistance equal to that provided at a speed of 40 km/h if vehicle speed signal is absent or incorrect,
– the angle sensor signal is incorrect: the steering wheel angle sensor is not calibrated (no active reminder).
"STOP" warning light lit with "faulty steering" displayed on the instrument panel: run diagnostics on the faulty
system. Contact your Techline.
Indexing the sensor is obligatory for its programming; switching the ignition on is not necessary for this operation.
The indexing is in effect as soon as the steering wheel is turned by more than a quarter of a turn to the left followed
by a quarter of a turn to the right.
The steering wheel angle sensor is initialised after switching the ignition on. For the sensor to be initialised, the
steering wheel must be turned to the left or the right. If this is not carried out, the steering wheel angle value reading
will be 1.2 degree higher or lower than the actual value.
If the sensor is initialised, the reading will be precise to within 0.1 degree.

Fault finding log
Before replacing the electric power assisted steering computer, the battery must be disconnected.
After each battery disconnection, the steering wheel angle is invalid (remains at 0) and the ET020 state is at
"State 3". Following a road test, this will result in a fault in the Electronic Stability Program.
Therefore, after each battery disconnection, turn the steering wheel a quarter of a turn to the left then a quarter of a
turn to the right and bring back the steering wheel to the centre point with wheels straight ahead and engine running.
If the problem persists, stop and restart the engine without pressing the ESP button and repeat previous
procedure.
Whenever replacing the electric power assisted steering computer, the computer must be configured according to
the vehicle concerned (see CF088 or SC001) and carry out the steering wheel angle programming (CF085).

steering" will be displayed if the steering wheel angle calibration is not done.
STATE 1: Not calibrated and not indexed: the angle has not been calibrated and the index has not been
identified (the steering wheel has not been turned by a one quarter turn) the calibration routine cannot be run. In
this case, the service warning light will flash at 8 Hz.
STATE 2: Not calibrated and indexed: the angle is not calibrated but the index has been identified. The
calibration routine can be carried out.
STATE 3: Calibrated and not initialised: the angle is calibrated but the steering wheel has not been turned since
switching the ignition on.
The angle is precise to within ± 1.2° ORthe battery was disconnected (with incorrect angle).
STATE 4: Calibrated and initialised: the angle is calibrated and the steering wheel has been turned since
switching the ignition on. The angle is precise to within ± 0.1°.
After a battery disconnection, the ET020 state means "calibrated and not initialised" and the PR121 "Steering
wheel angle" remains at 0.
Consult Help for the battery disconnection procedure.
If the angle is frozen at "0" despite the turning the wheel, the cause may be:
– battery disconnection: follow the "battery disconnection" procedure
– not calibrated: recalibrate with configuration CF085 "steering wheel angle programming".
– "STOP" warning light lit without assistance and ET020 stuck in "STATE 3": correct the assistance problem
before dealing with the angle sensor. If the calibration is not done, the service warning light will come
on and not the stop warning light.
If the assistance returns ("STOP" warning light off), and the angle problem persists, recalibrate the angle.
If the state is not in conformity with the actions performed on the steering wheel, see the diagnostic of fault DF038
"Angle sensor".
If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

The computer and the motor are both thermally protected. When the critical temperature is reached, the Electric
Power Assisted Steering computer limits the steering assistance to 15%.
This critical temperature may vary depending on the operation of and forces applied to the motor.
If the temperature is higher than 60˚C, let the steering rest for one hour to decrease the temperature. A search
should be performed to detect whether this abnormal temperature is due to the steering column environment which
amplifies the temperature increase, or to the irregular use made of the steering column by the driver.
NOTE:
When the steering wheel remains in limit position for more than 5 seconds, the steering assistance falls to 15%,
despite the fact that the temperature does not exceed 60˚C.

Faults:
Faults are declared to be either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain situation and
have disappeared since, or whether they remain but are not diagnosed within the current context).
The "present" or "stored" fault state should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is used after the +
after ignition feed (+APC) has been connected (without operating on the system components).
Deal with present faults according to the procedure specified in the section on "Interpretation of faults".
For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and follow the instructions shown in the "NOTES" section.
If the fault is confirmed when the setpoint is programmed, the fault is present. In this case, deal with the fault

Conformity check
The conformity check is designed to check the states and parameters which do not display any faults on the
diagnostic tool when inconsistent. This phase therefore:
– diagnoses faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.
– Checks that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault reappearing after repairs.
This section gives the fault finding procedures for states and parameters and the conditions for checking them.
If a state is not operating normally or a parameter is outside permitted tolerance values, you should consult the
corresponding fault finding page.
If the diagnostic tool check is correct, but the customer complaint persists, the problem should be dealt with
according to the customer complaint.

WARNING: A full fault finding procedure must be carried out for all faults on a complex system
using suitable tools. The FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the fault
WARNING: finding procedure, ensures a record is kept of the procedure carried out. It is an essential item for
communication with the manufacturer.
IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING LOG EACH TIME FAULT FINDING IS
CARRIED OUT.
6. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
All work on components requires compliance with safety regulations to prevent physical damage or human injury:
– Make sure the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low charge.
– It is strictly forbidden to carry out a road test with the diagnostic tool in dialogue mode since the ABS (anti-
lock braking system) and EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) functions are deactivated. Braking
pressure is identical on both axles of the vehicle (risk of slewing when braking heavily).

Fault finding log
The main functions of ABS on this vehicle are the electronic distribution of braking between the front and the rear
through the regulation of rear wheel skidding, and anti-lock braking through the regulation of skidding on all four
wheels.
The system also supplies the other computers with information on the vehicle speed via a wire connection for
COSLAD, the radio and the electric sunroof, and via the multiplex network for the rest of the computers. The ABS
computer supplies the multiplex network with the odometry for the instrument panel and navigation aid.In the event
of braking involving rapid deceleration, the ABS computer transmits a request to the UCH to switch on the hazard
warning lights via the multiplex network.

This command enables the vehicle VIN to be entered into the computer. This command should be used each time
the computer is replaced. The VIN number (VF...) can be found on the manufacturer's plate on the door pillar and on
the body panel under the bonnet.
Programming procedure:
– connect the diagnostic tool,
– refer to the ABS BOSCH 8.0 fault finding,
– select parameter setting VP001 "Write VIN",
– enter the VIN,
– clear the computer memory,
– exit fault finding mode,
– switch off the ignition,
– wait for the end of powerlatch,
– reread the parameters to confirm.
Whenever the ABS system is worked on in the workshop, the service date must be entered.
This command is used to programme the computer memory with the index required to calculate vehicle speed from
the speed at which the wheels turn.
The Bosch ABS 8.0 computer with the tachometric function supplies the vehicle speed signal to all areas where this
information is needed (instrument panel, engine management, etc...).
This vehicle speed signal replaces the one supplied by the speed sensor located on the gearbox. The ABS computer
calculates the vehicle speed from the speed of the wheels and the circumference of the tyres fitted on the vehicle.
Note:
The vehicle speed is supplied via a wire (track 23) to the COSLAD computer, the radio, the electric sunroof and via
the multiplex network for the other computers.
The tyre circumference must be programmed into the memory of a new computer. This consists of entering
an X index using command VP007 Tachometric index on the diagnostic tool.
Once the index has been tested using the VP007 command, clear the computer memory and then switch off the
ignition. Use the parameter PR030 to check that the index has been entered correctly.

Reminder: Wheel locking on a vehicle equipped with ABS or tyre noise, thought by the customer to be locking,
can be linked to a normal reaction of the system and should not necessarily be considered a fault:
– Braking with ABS regulation on very poor roads (significant tyre noise).
However, if the wheels are actually locking, lift the vehicle in order to be able to turn the wheels and check:
– Possible reversal of the speed sensor connection.
Using parameters PR001, PR002, PR003 and PR004, turn the wheels slowly and check the consistency of
the results obtained.
If the value measured is zero, turn the other wheels to confirm an electrical reversal of the sensors and repair
the wiring.
– Possible reversal of the pipes on the hydraulic unit.
Use commands AC003 Front left wheel solenoid valve, AC004 Front right wheel solenoid valve, AC005
Rear left wheel solenoid valves and AC006 Rear right wheel solenoid valves while depressing the brake
pedal and check for the occurrence of 5 unlocking/locking cycles on the wheel concerned (see the "Using
command modes" section). If the 5 cycles do not occur on the wheel tested (wheel remains locked), check
whether they occur on another wheel to confirm that the pipes have become inverted.
Repair if necessary.
If the 5 cycles cannot be completed on a wheel without inverting the pipes, replace the hydraulic unit.

3. REMINDERS
Fault finding:
Faults are declared to be either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain situation and
have disappeared since, or whether they remain but are not diagnosed within the current context).
The present or stored status of faults must be considered when using the diagnostic tool after switching on + after
ignition (without activating the system elements).
Deal with present faults according to the procedure specified in the Interpretation of faults section.
For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and follow the instructions shown in the "NOTES" section.
If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. In this case, deal
with the fault
Conformity check
The conformity check is designed to check the states and parameters which do not display any faults on the
diagnostic tool when inconsistent. This phase therefore allows:
– Fault finding without displaying the faults which could correspond to a customer complaint.
– Checks that the system operates correctly and that there is no risk of a fault reappearing after repairs.
This section gives the fault finding procedures for states and parameters and the conditions for checking them.
If a state is not operating normally or a parameter is outside permitted tolerance values, you should consult the
corresponding fault finding page.
If the diagnostic tool check is correct, but the customer's problem persists, it should be dealt with according to the
customer complaint.
A synopsis of the general procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the form of
a flow chart.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
Bosch 8.0 ESP
Vdiag No.: 08 Fault finding - System operation 38C
SYSTEM OPERATION:
– ABS (anti-lock braking system: the main functions of the ABS system are electronic braking distribution
(EBD) between the front and the rear, by regulating sliding of the rear wheels and ABS, by regulating sliding
of the four wheels.
– MSR (modulate system regulation). Drive wheel anti-slide when there is no load by limiting the engine
braking.
– ASR (traction control). Limits skidding of the drive wheels during starting or acceleration phases by limiting
the engine torque and braking the wheel(s) which are skidding.
– ESP (electronic stability program). Electronic stability program limiting oversteer or understeer by braking
certain wheels and controlling the engine torque.
– CSV (understeer control). Specific control of situations involving pronounced understeer by significant
vehicle braking in conjunction with specific dynamic stability program.
– AUTOMATIC LIGHTING OF HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS. A request to switch on the hazard warning
lights in situations requiring very sharp deceleration is generated on the CAN network and transmitted to the
UCH.
– AUTOMATIC LIGHTING OF BRAKE LIGHTS. In the case of understeer control (CSV only), the ESP
computer controls lighting of the brake lights via a relay, to warn other road users of the sharp deceleration
generated by the system.
IDENTIFICATION:
From the outside, two factors distinguish an ABS unit from an ABS/ESP unit:
– the size of the units (the ABS/ESP unit is larger than the ABS unit). The ABS unit has 8 solenoid valves
and the ABS/ESP unit has 12.
– The number of computer tracks (the ABS computer has 26 tracks and the ABS/ESP computer has
46 tracks).

REPLACING THE COMPUTER:
The BOSCH 8.0 ESP computer with tachometry function supplies the engine speed signal to all users of this signal
in the vehicle (instrument panel, engine control, etc).
This vehicle speed signal replaces the one supplied by the speed sensor located on the gearbox.
The ESP (electronic stability program) calculates the vehicle speed based on the wheel speed and tyre
circumference fitted to the vehicle.
Note:
The vehicle speed is transmitted via a wire (voie 33) to the Xenon bulb computer (COSLAD), the radio and the
electric sunroof and via the multiplex network for other computers.
The tyre circumference must be programmed into the memory of a new computer. This consists of
entering an X index using command VP007 Tachometric index on the diagnostic tool.
Once the index has been entered using the VP007 command, clear the computer memory and then switch off the
ignition. Use the PR030 parameter to check that the index has been entered correctly.
Select command VP004 on the diagnostic tool. (Check that the variants selected correspond to
the vehicle fittings).

VP001 WRITE VIN
As it is necessary to enter the VIN each time dialogue is established with the diagnostic tool, it must be programmed
into each vehicle computer whenever a computer is replaced.
Programming procedure:
Select command VP004 on the diagnostic tool. (You must ensure that the variants selected correspond correctly
to the vehicle type).
After each workshop operation on the ESP (Electronic stability control) system it is necessary to enter the date of the
operation.
The BOSCH 8.0 ESP computer with tachometric function transmits the vehicle speed signal to all users of this signal
in the vehicle instrument panel, engine control, etc).
This vehicle speed signal replaces the one supplied by the speed sensor located on the gearbox.
The ESP computer calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speed and the tyre circumference.
Note:
The vehicle speed is transmitted via a wire (track 33) to the COSLAD (Xenon bulb computer), the radio and the
sunroof and via the multiplex network for other computers.
The tyre circumference must be programmed into the memory of a new computer. This involves entering an
index using the diagnostic tool via command VP007 Tachometric index.
Once the index has been entered using the VP007 command, clear the computer memory and then switch off the
ignition. Use the PR030 parameter to check that the index has been entered correctly.

CHART 1 No communication with the ABS computer
NOTES None.
Ensure that the diagnostic tool is not causing the fault by trying to establish dialogue with a computer on
another vehicle. If the tool is not at fault, and dialogue cannot be established with any other computer on the
same vehicle, the cause could be a faulty computer interfering on the multiplex network.
Check the voltage of the battery and carry out the operations necessary to obtain a voltage which is to
specification (9.5 volts < correct battery voltage < 17.5 volts).
Perform fault finding on the multiplex network using the diagnostic tool.
Check the presence and the condition of the ABS fuses on the passenger compartment fuse board and in the
engine fuse box.
Check that the computer connector is properly connected and check the condition of its wiring.
Check the ABS earths (good condition, not corroded, tightness of the earth bolt above the ABS assembly).
Check that the computer is correctly supplied:
– Earth on tracks 1 and 4 of the 46-track connector
– + Before ignition feed on tracks 2 and 3 of the 46-track connector.
– + After ignition feed on track 18 of the 46-track connector.

CHART 2 Locking of one or more wheels
NOTES Only refer to this customer complaint after a complete check using the diagnostic tool
Reminder: The locking of wheels on a vehicle fitted with ABS, or squealing of the tyres, which feels like locking
to the customer, may be linked to normal operation of the system and should not always be
considered a fault:
– Braking with ABS on very poor roads (significant squealing).
Use the AC003 Front left-hand wheel solenoid valves, AC004 Front right-hand wheel solenoid valves,
AC005 Rear left-hand wheel solenoid valves and AC006 Rear right-hand wheel solenoid valves
commands while depressing the brake pedal and check for the occurrence of ten locking/unlocking
cycles on the wheel (see the Command modes processing section). If the five cycles do not occur on
the wheel tested (wheel remains locked), check whether they occur on another wheel to confirm that the
pipes have become inverted.
If the five cycles are not detected on a wheel and the pipes have not been reversed, change the hydraulic unit.
AFTER REPAIR Perform a road test followed by a test using the diagnostic tool.

pressure
Only refer to this customer complaint after a complete check using the diagnostic tool
NOTES Warning: ABS may be unresponsive when the vehicle is driven on surfaces such as
icy roads, wet cobbled streets, etc.
Brake pedal vibrations may be felt which are connected to the reactions of the system in particular situations:
– Crossing rumble strips.
– Tight cornering with lifting of the inside rear wheel.
These vibrations may be linked to the activation of the brake limiter when pressure on the rear axle is limited.
If the fault is different, check the speed sensor connectors (micro-breaks) as well as the air gaps.
AFTER REPAIR Perform a road test followed by a test using the diagnostic tool.

NOTES Only consult this customer complaint after a complete check using the diagnostic tool
On poor road surfaces it is normal to feel jolts and vibrations of the pedal as well grating which is more
significant than on good surfaces.
This gives the impression of a variation in efficiency, but this should be considered normal.
