We are more than basketball: the top 5 things to do at Gonzaga

before you graduate

By Cade Hajovsky

In Spokane, the end of March Madness means the end of Gonzaga basketball which means the
end of the school year is right around the corner. With only a month left in my senior year of
college, I have been reflecting on my time at Gonzaga and the moments that have made it
memorable and, believe it or not, they do not all include basketball.

It is time to put the stress of post-grad plans and finding the perfect white graduation dress
aside and focus on the activities that have made the last four years amazing. So, current
Gonzaga juniors (and seniors if you want to cram in some bucket list items), listen up and make
sure you do not leave Gonzaga without doing these 5 things.

1. Kennel Campout
A phrase everyone at GU has heard before: “You go to Gonzaga, you must love
basketball!” Not only do Gonzaga students love basketball, but are willing to sleep
outside in the rain and snow in order to get a good seat. Every Gonzaga student should
experience sleeping all night in a tent at Kennel Campout at least once. The community
that comes together on the quad is unlike any other and even if it is freezing cold, you
are surrounded by your friends and hundreds of other zags which makes campout an
experience unlike any other.

2. Story Slam (Listen or Participate)

Story Slam is an experience that is so unique to Gonzaga and it is an amazing way to
learn more about your peers and the impact of the GU Community. Go to Story Slam
and listen to fellow Zags share their life stories. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will
be so glad that you went. And don’t shy away from the opportunity to share your story,
you never know if there are Zags in the audience who will relate to you and your
experience. Story Slam happens once a month on a Monday at 7 p.m. and lasts around 1
hour – set the textbook down and go listen to Zags share amazing stories.

3. Play Pool at Jack & Dans

Everyone at Gonzaga dreams of their 21st birthday because they can finally enter into
the forbidden doors of Jack & Dans. Before you graduate, you not only need to walk out
with a Jack & Dans sweatshirt, but you must walk into the bar with a handful of quarters
and play a game of pool. There is only one pool table at Jack and Dans which makes it
even more of a bucket list item as it is rare to find it open. But trust me, you will not
regret waiting your turn and playing a round with all of your friends.
4. Intermural Sports
As a freshman, I was terrified at the idea of playing intermural sports. As a current
senior, I am registered for every intermural sport available. Participating in intermurals
(and hopefully winning a championship t-shirt) is something everyone needs to do
before they graduate. If you claim that sports aren’t your thing (they aren’t mine either),
I would suggest innertube basketball – it is impossible to be good, everyone is bad, and
it is so, SO fun.

5. Silent Disco
SILENT DISCO, I repeat, SILENT DISCO!!!! Have you ever wanted to dance with 100 other
strangers but not listen to their awful singing? – then Silent Disco is for you! From
Freshmen to Seniors, everyone loves to rally together at silent disco, slap on a pair of
headphones, and dance the night away. Even if you only stop by for 15 minutes (this
won’t happen, it’s too fun), you need to take advantage of this free SpikeNites event
whenever it happens.
