Should the age for drinking alcohol be increase or reduce
Grade11-HUMSS Gornez

Since the National Minimum Drinking Age Act was passed in1984, there has
been ongoing discussion regarding the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) in the
United States.Young adults are less likely to consume alcohol sensibly, and alcohol
can harm the brain while it is still growing. Some advocates of lowering the legal
drinking age believe that the U.S. should increase it even higher, to 25.Raising the
legal drinking age to 25 is essential given emotional and physical maturity. They also
say the minimum drinking age lives by reducing the risk of harming yourself and
others.Raising the drinking age to 25 has benefits like, it protects brain development,
prevents drunk driving fatalities, and decreases underage drinking. And raising it also
has disadvantages like, raises the thrill of underage drinking and doesn't align with
other age restrictions.( )

Binge drinking, heavy drinking, and any drinking by women who are pregnant
or who are under the age of 21 are all examples of excessive drinking. The guidelines
also advise against encouraging people who do not currently consume alcohol to do
so for any reason, and they advise against excessive alcohol consumption among
adults who are of legal drinking age.The risk of numerous dangerous health disorders
rises immediately as a result of excessive alcohol consumption.( )

Alcohol can make a person feel happy, relaxed and social for a short period of
time, but excessive or chronic long-term drinking can lead to alcohol dependence or
addiction, formally known as alcohol use disorder.Chronic alcohol use is also
associated with other cognitive and mental health problems, including learning or
memory problems, and exacerbates or causes serious mental health problems such as
depression and anxiety.Alcohol has physiological effects on the body in addition to
mental ones.According to evidence, even moderate drinking may increase a persons
overall chance of dying from a variety of conditions, such as certain types of cancer
and certain types of cardiovascular disease.( )

Scientific evidence has proven that alcohol-related accidents and fatalities are greatly
reduced when the drinking age is raised.Even after young people were 21 years old,
alcohol use declined as a result of the minimum legal drinking age.As a result, raising
the drinking age to 21-25 can prevent both immediate and long-term harm from
alcohol use.( )
