Welcome to the Electrical Installation and Maintenance Grade 9 Self-Learning

Module on Knob and Tube Wiring Method!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

KNOB AND TUBE WIRING METHOD

The knob and tube is the old way of wiring method also known as K &
T and popular as open wiring method this is done using cleats, mica tubing,
porcelain tubes and knobs either split type or solid type to protect, secure,
support, prevent the wire touching each other and woods that runs on the
basement or attic based on the PEC section 212.
The purpose of knob and tube is to acts as wrapping body of wire,
secures the wire in place, anchor the wire, separated the wire to avoid
possible short circuit, provide wire direction changes, and prevent excessive
wire tension.
The knob and tube advantages and disadvantages are here as follows;

ADVANTEGES
1. the porcelain used life span is ore longer
2. this is excellent compared to other wiring method because the wire
separated to each other to avoid short circuit and less expensive
3. this is higher ampacity (the temperature affecting the current carry
by the wire (increased/Decreased) because it is more ventilated
compared other wiring method
4. the knobs is easily to position because is most likely attach to
woods

 DISADVANTAGES

1. there is no grounding that may cause electric shock

2. The modification is not safe
3. the wire insulation is become brittle that may cause fire hazard
4. the wire may sag over by time

TYPES OF KNOB

Split type Solid Type

The split type is intended for smaller wire than gauge no. 8 while the
solid type is for bigger wire gauge no. 8,7,6,5,4 below
Note: wire rules; Gauge no. 1 (BIGGER WIRE) -------- 20 (SMALLER WIRE)

The knob may fasten using nails or screws and may have leather
washer placed in nail head with as illustrated below to avoid breaking.

Spacing of Split Knobs and Conductors

In wiring installation, when the wires pass through knobs, supports, floor
beams or any wooden part of house or building, the wires must be put in a flexible
mica tubing or in a porcelain tubes also mica tubing used and provided if the wires
is passing each other. By doing this, wiring circuit is more protected.

Safety reminders when installing knob and tube wiring

1. When using gimlet do not apply to much pressure to avoid splitting the wood
or try to hammer it.

3. Maintain sharp electrician’s knife to avoid wire scratches or cut during
splicing

4. In driving screw practice the use of appropriate right size of screw to avoid
lose thread.

5. Do not forget to enclose all wire conductors that contact or cross each other
with mica tubing to avoid possible short circuit that may cause fire.

6. Conduct continuity test before testing or seek the assistance of teacher or

expert to avoid accident.
