WSET3 (2)

Name two premium appellations in Left Bank Bordeaux and another two in Right Bank.
Left Bank: Pauillac, Margaux Right Bank: Saint-Emilion, Pomerol

Describe the climate in Left Bank Bordeaux and how it affects grape ripening?
With the moderation of Mexican gulf current, Bordeaux has a moderate maritime climate. There will be no risks
of frosts but there will be rainfall and humidity throughout the year which affect flowering ,fruit sets and harvest.
It also causes fungal diseases which may reduce yields. Therefore, vintage variations are big concerns in Bordeaux
as the maturity levels vary tremendously. Canopy management is important to deal with these problems.

WSET 3 Why are the soils of Pomerol and St-Emilion are suitable for Merlot?
Unlike gravel soils on the left bank which store and reflect heat, the soils of St-Emilion and Pomerol are
predominantly clay soils which tend to be lower in temperature. Merlot is early ripening and it can grow well on
cooler soils with less heat than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Describe distinct groups of vineyards on differing soils in Saint-Emilion.

1. To the north and west are plateau vineyards.
Warm, well-drained gravel and limestone soils encourage the growth of Cabernet Franc and some Cabernet
Sauvignon.
2.Vineyards on the escarpment to the south and east with clay limestone soils. The most prestigious wines of
Saint-Emilion come from these two areas. The wines have medium to high tannins, a soft and rich mouthfeel with
complex red berry fruit and plum aromas.
3. Vineyards on sandy soils at the foot of the escarpment. They are lighter- bodied • less prestigious wines.
