    Archaea were first discovered in the 1970s. They inhabit extreme environments such as hot springs, deep sea hydrothermal vents, salt lakes, and acidic swamps. Archaea range in size from 0.1 to 15 micrometers. They share cellular structures common to all cells, including a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, and ribosomes. Current applications of archaea include using methanogenic archaea to produce biogas and halophilic archaea to produce enzymes for industrial use.
