WHAT IS GARDIASIS?
What is
Gardiasis?
Giardiasis is a diarrheal disease caused
by the microscopic parasite Giardia
duodenalis (or “Giardia” for short).
Gardiasis can be spread by:
:
Swallowing unsafe food or water contaminated with
Giardia germs
Diarrhea
Dehydration
How long after infection do symptoms appear?
TREATMENT
What can I do to avoid and treat giardiasis?
Wash your hands with soap and water at critical moments, particularly:
before preparing or eating food, and
after using the restroom or changing diapers.
Avoid eating or drinking food or water that has been contaminated with Giardia
microorganisms.
If no other supply of potable water is available, properly treat water from
springs, lakes, or rivers (surface water) while trekking or camping.
While swimming, avoid eating water from swimming pools, hot tubs, splash
pads, and untreated water from springs, lakes, or rivers (surface water).
TREATMENTS:
Metrodidazole(Flagyl)
Tinidazole(Tindamax)
Tinidazole works as well as metronidazole and has many of the same side
effects, but it can be given in single dose.
Nitazoxanide(Alinia)
This is in liquid form thats why it is Very easy for children to swallow it.
Other drugs:
• Quinacrine
• Furazolidane
• Paromomycin
